FILL: TEAM OIKAWA TOORU/USHIJIMA WAKATOSHI T
Nobody knew when it started, not even them could trace perfectly when discreet glancing exchanges turned into rushed words, hidden hand holding finally turned into a kiss stolen behind the gym. It was fast, innocent and sweet, loving words slipping away as their lips broke up contact.
All practices seemed more lively now, Tanaka purposely would stick on Sugawara’s team, flashing bright smiles at every spike he made. Kageyama was now the regular setter but the buzzcut boy wouldn’t think twice before saying that nothing, nothing at all felt like spiking the ball of the person he loved.
When they first lost against Aoba Johsai it was like a shadow was engulfing them, Tanaka felt like drowning, unable to reach up and hold Sugawara’s hand. He was slipping away, all third years were. Defeat meant they would need to focus on their future and this future didn’t involve volleyball. At least not by carrying Karasuno’s jersey. However, Sugawara turned his eyes to him, a light glow of pride still lingering, he wasn’t down. All third years would go on.
That night was the first of many that would be filled with moans, promises of a future together, breathlessly calling of each other names as their bodies melted together, moving like one in perfect sync. When the morning finally came, Sugawara woke up with his hand still resting over Tanaka’s strong chest, lips curving in a warm smile, fingertips making their way to his face, lightly tracing his jaw until Tanaka woke up as well, turning his head to press soft lips against the palm of his hand.
But, like everything good it would also come to an end. Spring High, Nationals and then what? After the ultimate victory there was nothing left for Sugawara.
Finally the graduation day came, students rushing down the hallways to congratulate their upperclassmen, the seniors nervously fidgeting, anxious about their farewell speech. Stopping right before the gym’s door was a boy with silver hair, hand resting against metal, lightly trembling as he tried his best to avoid the tears, those would come later, when nobody would be able to see.
“Koushi?” The voice was cautious as Tanaka approached him, it was finally the day he feared the most but there was no escape, it will be just one year, he always made himself believe in that, just one year and they would be back together.
Sugawara turned to him, a small smile on his face that couldn’t hide the growing redness of his eyes. “Ryuu…” He breathed out, reaching up to hold his hand gingerly, leaving something with him before backing away.
Tanaka looked down at his hand, a small button left there. He looked up with widened eyes, feeling them getting watery by the time, a warmth taking over his body making all his thoughts fuzzy. If he believed he would be ready for that he was wrong, so wrong. Tears started to run down his face, hand balled in a fist, hitting the door right beside Sugawara’s head. “Koushi…”
Sugawara flinched at first, but soon his posture relaxed, his smile still lingering when he started to stroke the taller’s face gently. “Ryuu, that’s alright…”
Tanaka shook his head, how dare him to keep his composure like that? It wasn’t fair he would be the only one to cry, that was too much. In anguish he finally voiced “It must hurt. You don't have to smile if you're in pain” And with that, Sugawara’s smile faded.
