FILL: TEAM NANASE HARUKA/TACHIBANA MAKOTO, RATED G
804 words
Makishima often found himself in awkward situations. Such as not knowing how to talk to people, not knowing how to not act socially awkward, not smiling the way people normally do, and all that combined together while being in one of Toudou’s social events.
This time it was a party. It was not a huge one, and to his dismay, it was his own farewell party and he did not even want to have one. But Toudou insisted of ‘giving Maki-chan the best memories before going to England’, which was probably getting wasted and having a heavy hangover the next day.
Seeking for fresh air and a break from all the noises upstairs, Makishima walked down the staircase of the place they booked and opened the door to the back garden. It was hot as it was supposed to be in the summer, the noise of cicadas filled the humid air of the night.
Rubbing his eyes tiredly and sitting down, he stared at the open sky. It was dull, nothing was really new, expect for the fact that the sky in Hakone countryside was much clearer than that of the city. If you looked hard enough you could almost see the stars shining beside the moon. It was not a beautiful scenery to begin with, but it brought his mind at peace.
“Maki-chan? Are you here?”
The silence was soon interrupted by a familiar voice, which was coming towards his direction. No doubt it was Toudou, because he was the only one who called Makishima ‘Maki-chan’ for starters (sometimes Arakita did just to annoy him), and he was also probably the only who would notice Makishima’s absence in two minutes. For some reason Makishima was not particularly annoyed by the fact that Toudou ditched everyone to come find him.
Sitting next to him on the park bench, Makishima watched as the light from the lamppost - the only source of light in the pitch darkness - shone on the crown of Toudou’s head, making him seemingly and somewhat holy and sacred.
“What’s the matter?” Toudou asked him, referring to the fact that he sneaked out of the party to be by himself, as always.
“Nothing’s the matter.”
“Do you wanna go back inside?”
“Not really.”
“Then I’ll sit here with you,” Toudou offered with a bright smile.
“You already did,” Makishima remarked, rolling his eyes. The bench was never two small for two people, so he could not complain.
“Are you excited?” Toudou asked, taking a drink from the soda can he brought outdoors. “You must be really looking forward to England.”
“Yeah, I guess so.”
“Maki-chan, I’m serious, remember to-”
“Text you when I arrived, text you when I meet my brother, and text you when I get home so we can video chat,” Makishima recited from heart in monotone. “I remember.”
Toudou had been nagging him about this almost everyday, even if there was still a week left before he board the plane. But he could not say he hated about that, either.
It was just that sometimes he wondered why Toudou insisted on clinging on to him.
“When will you come back?” Toudou asked. It was not the first time he asked this question, but Makishima knew that he just wanted the same answer over and over again.
“I’ll be back next summer to watch the race, and then I’ll stay, maybe for a couple of weeks, but nothing’s settled yet.”
“I’ll wait for you to come back,” Toudou promised. “No matter how long, I’ll wait.”
“Look, Toudou,” Makishima turned to him and said. “Maybe I can’t be…that, for you.”
Even though discreet and indirect, Toudou immediately understood what he meant.
“Why?”
“Maybe you’re just confused,” Makishima said, smiling self-deprecatingly. “You should be with a girl; you can do much better, trust me.”
“Yeah, maybe I can,” Toudou said. “But I don’t want to be with anyone else, expect for you.”
“I’m weird.”
“I’m weird, too,” Toudou said, hinting at his headband.
“You’re good with people.”
“There’s nothing good about that, sometimes.”
“There’s nothing good coming out from being with me,” Makishima told him.
“Don’t say that.”
“You know it’s true,” Makishima retorted. “You are just being-”
Toudou leaned forward and caught his last words with a kiss. He held Makishima’s cheeks in his palms, so careful and gentle as if it was the most precious thing that ever laid in his hands.
“You are beautiful,” he said. “But if you insist on yourself being weird, we can just be weird together.”
“But why me?” Makishima turned away, feeling his face turning red from the compliment.
“Because,” Toudou said in a matter-of-fact tone. “You are Maki-chan.”
