"You are my favorite 'what if' / You're my best 'I'll never know'" – Fall Out Boy
Re: FILL: TEAM KUROO TETSUROU/OIKAWA TOORU, T
word count: 1280
“He’s pretty,” is the first thing slipping past Kuroo’s lips the first time he lays eyes on Oikawa Tooru.
“Who?” Bokuto asks and Kuroo can’t help but grin at how much of an owl his friend really is. He nods his head in in Oikawa’s general direction and Bokuto’s eyes widen.
“Oh, you mean Aobajousai’s captain. Yeah, pretty, but with a serious mean streak from what I’ve heard.”
Kuroo snorts and bumps his shoulder against Bokuto’s while they make their way through the crowded halls.
“From what you’ve heard? Didn’t know you gave much about gossip.”
“I don't. I heard from Shrimpy. They were up against Aobajousai a few times.”
Bokuto throws a glance over his shoulder as if he wants to make sure Oikawa can’t hear them. Kuroo doesn’t bother to remind him that they’re already so far away they can hardly see him, let alone be overheard by the other captain.
“He calls him Grand King.”
“That’s…ridiculous.” Kuroo huffs and Bokuto agrees with a soft giggle.
“It’s Shrimpy, what do you expect? Anyways, I’ve also heard he has hoards of girls constantly flocking around him, so good luck trying to get him to acknowledge your existence.”
“I said he’s pretty, not that I want to sweep him off his feet, carry him far far away and live together happily ever after.”
Bokuto shrugs. “Whatever you say.”
Kuroo wrinkles his nose. “What is he doing here anyways? Aobajousai are from Miyagi or not?”
Bokuto doesn’t answer immediately, he’s too busy trying to balance a discarded paper ball on his foot.
“I think they’re here for a friendly match with some team and—DAMN!”
Kuroo doesn’t need to look to know that Bokuto lost the makeshift ball. His eyes are on the ever moving crowd, trying to catch a last glimpse of Aobajousai’s famous captain.
“Is that so?”
-*-
The thing is, Oikawa Tooru really is pretty with his long lashes and brown eyes, slender fingers and smug grin. Oikawa Tooru is also ridiculously good at volleyball. It’s a talent born from hours upon hours of hard work and Kuroo can respect that. Unfortunately, Oikawa Tooru is also a giant asshole. Bokuto was right about that much.
“And you are?” Oikawa looked him up and down, his eyes lingering just a second longer on Kuroo’s unruly bed hair before returning to meet his gaze.
Kuroo smiled and kept his hand outstretched, too stubborn to let it fall to his side and pretend that Oikawa didn’t just humiliate in front of both their teams by refusing to shake it.
“Kuroo Tetsurou. I’m the captain of Nekoma. You’re going to play against us tomorrow.”
Recognition flashes in Oikawa’s eyes. “So you’re the one who kept pestering our coach, demanding a training match between our teams.”
Now that was a little embarrassing, Kuroo had to admit. He didn’t expect Oikawa to know about that, nor did he think that Aobajousai’s coach would complain about his overly enthusiastic emails in front of his players.
“Well, I was actually acting on behalf of our coach.”
He wasn’t. Naoi told him to organize a friendly match on his own, for fuck's sake, after he begged him for the fourth time to contact the other team as long as they were still in the city. Oikawa didn’t need to know this particular detail though.
“Of course,” he drawled. There was no doubt that he didn’t believe a word Kuroo was saying and he turned without another word, leaving Kuroo alone in the middle of the gym Aobajousai used for training.
“We’ll see each other tomorrow then.” Kuroo called after him.
Oikawa threw him a look over his shoulder and Kuroo had to resist the urge to swoon. Oikawa really was ridiculously pretty.
Instead, Kuroo grinned at the other boy, a challenge shining in his golden eyes.
“And then we’ll crush you.”
Oikawa’s eyes widened and for the first time since they met, Kuroo caught a spark of interest burning in them.
“We’ll see about that,” he hissed, his back straight, his posture proud and unrelenting and maybe Hinata was not so wrong in calling him ‘Grand King’ after all.
In hindsight, Kuroo thinks he shouldn’t have talked so big. Oikawa gives him nothing when they finally go up against each other. His legs are bruised and his arms hurt from trying - and failing - to receive those inhuman serves. He manages to receive half of them at best and Kuroo slowly begins to understand that there’s more to Oikawa Tooru than a pretty face.
It comes as no surprise when they lose. Kuroo expected as much the moment Oikawa stepped on court and looked at him like he wanted to devour him.
Now Kuroo stands in the middle of the field, hands on his knees and his back bend while he tries to will his breathing to return to normal.
“Are you alright?” It’s rare for Kenma to show such open concern. Kuroo appreciates the gesture and gives his best friend a half-hearted thumbs up. He’s exhausted and shaky. Kenma doesn’t look much better. In fact, his whole team looks like it’s about to collapse any minute.
“It’s fine,” he wheezes. “Just a little tired. It was a good game.”
“It was,” someone agrees. Kuroo looks up - his sweaty bangs obscuring most of his vision - and locks eyes with Aobajousai’s vice captain.
Kuroo straightens with a groan and offers the other his hand. It’s taken without hesitation.
“A bit brutal for a friendly game though. You’re always this ruthless?”
He’s only half serious but Iwaizumi almost look guilty at his words and rubs at the tip of his nose in an obvious gesture of abashment.
“Usually not,” he grumbles and Kuroo swears that he sees his eyes shift to Oikawa who’s standing at the far end of the gym, talking to his teammates. “I wanted to apologize, to be honest. I don’t know what’s wrong with him today. Oikawa is usually not this brutal.”
“Don’t worry, we survived it and I’d be disappointed if he hadn’t shown us everything he’s got.” Kuroo reassures.
Iwaizumi doesn’t seem convinced but he’s too relieved to push the issue any further. “Alright…maybe we can play another match someday. You guys are good.”
Kuroo smiles and when he answers, he means it. “I’d like that.”
They shake hands before Iwaizumi excuses himself and hurries over to Oikawa.
“He’s staring at you.” Kenma says out of nowhere.
“Who?”
“Oikawa-san, he’s glaring at you. I think he doesn’t like you.”
Kuroo doesn’t dignify the statement with an answer, but his eyes search for Oikawa’s lithe figure and when he finds him, their eyes lock and he returns the fierce gaze with equal intensity.
“I think you’re right.”
-*-
The night after the game, Kuroo jerks off to the memory of Oikawa’s heated glare. He comes with a hoarse cry, wipes his hand off on the sheets of his bed and can’t help but wonder.
Few people manage to arouse his interest, even fewer can keep it. Oikawa is one of them. Kuroo wants to play against him once more, wants to understand him and learn how he ticks. Wants to strip him bare. Touch him. Fuck him. Or be fucked by him. Make him want to scream. Wants to kiss him until his lips are swollen and bruised.
He wants to get to know Oikawa Tooru and when he rolls onto his side and closes his eyes he still asks himself: what if?
