well could i stop myself.... no
Dates are weird.
There's just something about his weekly outings with Iwaizumi that still seem mildly surreal at this point. Maybe it's the fact that—well, this is Iwaizumi Hajime, someone Hinata still has infrequent nightmares about ("Well, he's scary!") and Tanaka is still wildly suspicious of. It's not to say the weirdness of these dates are negative by any means. On the contrary, Ennoshita's pretty sure they're the complete opposite.
At least, that's what he's assuming the gears constantly turning in his head mean, essentially. He can't stop thinking when he's with Iwaizumi; he can't stop thinking about what to say, about what to do. He can hardly neutralize his expression when he catches Iwaizumi looking straight at him.
So, dates are weird. His repertoire of films and others affiliated works of cinematic art did leave him with a handful of romantic expectations. That, and Nishinoya's insistent daydreams about "dates with Kiyoko-san" have left Ennoshita wondering if the world's really supposed to stop when they first start holding hands, if the entire world starts spinning all too quickly when the first kiss happens.
A particularly loud crash from the front of the theater has him snapping back into reality. It's an action film today, something about intense car-racing and the interrelations of the racers. He hasn't been paying much attention, which is uncharacteristic of Ennoshita, of all people, who even shushes Tanaka during the bad movies. Iwaizumi is staring intently at the movie screen, to the left of him, hands curling over the edges of the armrests on both sides of him, gaze unyielding as another explosion (why are the cars exploding?) happens.
...Dates are weird, Ennoshita thinks idly to himself. They're sitting in a dark movie theater, nearly empty save for a scattered handful of people seated at the very front, completely silent and well, he's okay with it. He's okay with—this, doing essentially nothing because Ennoshita is hardly a romantic, but he thinks it might be because he just likes the ideas of being with. With.
"Are you bored?" Iwaizumi whispers, breath tickling Ennoshita's ear.
The symptoms of spending time with Iwaizumi Hajime are plentiful. During their first date, which was hardly a date and more Iwaizumi trying to shake off Oikawa (who was quite easy to spot in his terrible disguise) and Ennoshita trying to contemplate the many ways to make Tanaka and Nishinoya suffer (who were equally terribly disguised), he found himself (1) saying a lot of stupid things, (2) saying a lot of stupid things in sequence, and (3) laughing nervously while staring into space, possibly wishing himself into oblivion.
This is their second date, and Ennoshita has thus far experience (4) overthinking things, (5) drifting off into a distant, ethereal plane of existence while contemplating what to say, and (6) now, the rapid beating of his heart—something he hasn't felt in the natural progression of his every day save for during volleyball practice.
He thinks, very weakly, that if this were a script—if this were a silly, fluffy movie with lots of room and budget for scenes to make the heart rates of innocent people quicken, this would be the absolutely perfect time for their hands to tangle effortlessly.
"Ennoshita?"
He squeezes his hands into fists and settles them on his knees. "I'm fine," he says unconvincingly. "This is a fun movie. About... cars. Cars and their complexities."
Ennoshita Chikara, at the tender age of almost-seventeen, has no idea how to explain the trembling that starts in his fingertips. It's like his body, his brain are both reacting to something Ennoshita is not aware of himself.
And he turns to look at Iwaizumi, maybe in a muted sort of panic cloaked beneath his carefully constructed mask of lethargy, to say something along the lines of "I have to go lock myself in the bathroom," but Iwaizumi is already looking—looking at him, and the words slip from Ennoshita's tongue gracelessly.
He smiles faintly. "Are you okay, Iwaizumi-san?" he asks in spite of his own state. His mind is always working, gears always turning, shifting, and he wonders if it's obvious. Nishinoya has always commended him on his poker face after all.
Iwaizumi shakes his head and Ennoshita smiles again before turning to face the screen, fanning his hands out over his knee caps and contemplating how perfect it would be if the camera panned into a view of just their faces and Iwaizumi kissing him, just as the movie shifts from night to day so there's enough light to illuminate their expressions.
But films are hardly a reality and Ennoshita's perfectly content with the way his heart's thumping against his chest, reminding him that he's on a date, a very weird date, with someone he thinks he might like more than he intended.
There are more crashing noises, the sound of tires squealing. The noises are loud but they fade into almost nothing when he feels a hand on his shoulder, when he processes the sound of Iwaizumi shifting in his seat. And when he turns to address Iwaizumi, hopeful that he might have coherent words to say, those very words are taken from him. They're stolen away as Iwaizumi kisses him, sure and sweet.
When he pulls away, they linger, faces just centimeters away from one another before what just happened seems to process in Iwaizumi's mind as he reels back, embarrasses. He glances at Ennoshita and then at the screen before rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.
"Sorry," Iwaizumi says stiffly. "I've been meaning to do that since the first explosion."
"It's fine," Ennoshita says a little too quickly in response, gaze darting from Iwaizumi's face to his hand, now resting on the armrest between them. His own hands are still shaking, tremors from the excitement, from the adrenaline rush still lingering at the very tips of his fingers.
It takes a second before he musters up the courage to reach out, to take Iwaizumi's hand in his, to lace their fingers together while trying to look purposeful.
Iwaizumi looks at him, eyebrow raised, amusement coloring his expression. Ennoshita clears his throat and tries to look indignant as he offers a faint smile and shrugs his shoulders.
"I think," he begins mildly, "that was a perfect time to kiss me."
A couple is reunited on screen and the audience at the very front hoots obnoxiously. Iwaizumi squeezes his hand, gaze glued to the front (perhaps to hide the fact that he can't quite suppress the smile on his lips).
Ennoshita faces the front as well and thinks to himself that dates...?
Dates are great.
