"Oh, it's you, Kimoizumi."
Midousuji peeked over the shelves of the convenience store and leered at him. His eyes were wide and blank, as usual, but they still managed to be scrutinzing and judging.
They attend the same college now, so of course it was unavoidable that they ran into each other occasionally, but Imaizumi was still taken by surprise every time it happened. Though he no longer harboured any real aminosity towards the other cyclist, he didn't think he'd ever reach a point where he could actually say he liked him. No matter their relationship, Midousuji was strange and off-putting in both appearance and mannerisms, and Imaizumi felt distantly inadequate for not having figured out exactly how to deal with him.
"Midousuji," Imaizumi greeted in turn, then looked back towards the shelf, trying to remember what he'd been looking for. Midousuji's mere presence was horribly distracting. Imaizumi considered his words for a moment, then sighed and asked, "Do you think you could stop calling me that?"
"Kimoizumi is Kimoizumi," the other cyclist said in a high-pitched, sing-song voice. "Or did you like Butazumi better, Butazumi?"
"It's childish, don't you think? We're past all that now, aren't we?"
"Gross," Midousuji says immediately.
There was a pause, and Imaizumi looked back up to see Midousuji cocking his head at him. The tall, thin man was twisting his head awkwardly sideways as his eyes seemed to roll in their sockets in thought. Imaizumi did not dare to hope he would actually stop though. Even though he had asked, he couldn't really imagine the former Kyoto cyclist complying. It would probably be really weird if he did.
"For 80,000 yen a month, I'll stop," Midousuji said, after almost a minute.
Imaizumi laughed as his gut response. When he looked again, Midousuji as staring expectantly at him, and Imaizumi had to stiffle another chuckle at the sheer intensity and seriousness of the expression.
"What would you even do with that money?"
"None of Kimoizumi's business."
"You're just going to use that name more than usual now, aren't you."
"Gross," Midousuji said. "Kimoizumi is gross, gross, gross, so gross. Can't even accept how gross his name is."
Imaizumi wanted to retort back with "Kimoisuji" as he had once upon a time, but he stopped himself. It was childish, he'd said. And it was. Midousuji was a rival cyclist and a teammate, and Imaizumi could admit now that Midousuji was better than he was at thinking outside the box and taking risks. But for all of Imaizumi's own awkwardness and general discomfort, he had better social graces, and he preferred to keep it that way.
"What are you here to pick up, anyway?" Imaizumi asked, changing the subject.
"None of Kimoizumi's business," Midousuji said again.
"Of course not. Well, see you later then."
With another sigh, Imaizumi plucked two onigiri off the shelf and started out of the aisle. He could hear Midousuji mutter "gross" not quite under his breath from behind him.
Over the next several days, there was a definite uptick in the number of times Midousuji called him by some horrible nickname. The most irritating was when Naruko also picked up on it and chimed in with his own, even more childish variations. Here and there, Imaizumi found himself actually considering seeing if Midousuji would stop if given 80,000 yen. It wouldn't be a reoccurring payment, of course... he'd just see what would happen. Just once.
On the fourteenth day after their conversation in the convenience store, Midousuji called him "Kimoizumi" a record of five hundred times over the course of a single training session. Imaizumi wasn't even sure if he was doing it on purpose anymore. Perhaps his brain had fixated itself on the word and he was speaking on auto pilot. Every other word out of his mouth was "gross" as it was. He rarely called anyone by their actual names. Maybe it wasn't possible for him to?
"Midousuji," Imaizumi said, stopping him in the hall after practice.
"What is it, Kimoizumiiiiii?" the taller cyclist drawled, cocking his head at an extreme angle.
"Here." Imaizumi pressed a long envelope into his hand. "Stop calling me that."
Midousuji held up the envelope delicately and stuck his face inches from it. "Ehhh? What's this?"
"80,000 yen. So stop calling me 'Kimoizumi', all right?"
"Gross," Midousuji said, then laughed. "Okay, Shunsuke-kun, then--"
Immediately, Imaizumi snatches the envelope back. "Nevermind!" he said, too loudly. His ears were burning. "Kimoizumi is fine!"
He turned on his heel and disappeared down the hall in the next second, leaving Midousuji to stare blankly after him.
"Gross."

Re: FILL: Team Aoyagi Hajime/Teshima Junta, G
This was great! I love how Imaizumi is clearly trying to not be mad at Midousuji but it's just totally failing. Love the last part too, where Midousuji used Shunsuke-kun, oh my god. Thank you so much!!
