564 words
Why do I keep writing weird fucked up sad stuff about my OTP that I enjoy in a happy fluffy way? Anyway, I wanted to preface this with saying that I don't really enjoy seeing them suffer like this. I'm sorry because this ended up more painful... I should have used this other approach. But here it is.
----
The ocean waves crashed onto the shore, loud enough to ring in Haru's ears. Haru pulled his jacket tighter around him as he stared out at the horizon. By now, all of the Tachibana household was asleep, even the young twins with boundless energy. With no one to question him, Haru stepped out of his house, one of the times he would be grateful no one else lived with him to notice. His mind raced with thoughts of the past, not letting Haru get any rest, so he figured he could get some fresh air.
His middle school days passed in a blur and he barely registered the start of high school. All he wanted was to get through life. He didn't want to be reminded of his last year of elementary school, the time where Matsuoka Rin decided to rope him into his relay. Haru could sense that they were both different from others, from how Rin could feel the water even better than him (a fact that made Haru's skin burn). And Haru grudgingly admired how hard of a worker Rin was, noticing how he would run home after school.
But what was worse was how Rin had wormed into his heart. He felt a strange, fluttery feeling when Rin flashed that grin of his, and he had to look away to calm himself down. A kind of happiness filled his heart in that brief time they had together, a strange and different kind of happiness than Haru had ever felt before. It was new and frightening.
And then Rin announced, all of a sudden, that he would be attending a middle school all the way in Australia. Haru hated it when people left, when the few people he let into his life decided to walk back out. How could someone he knew for only a couple of months have this effect on him? A bitter taste always followed the sweet memories of that annoying guy.
Yet any trace of bitterness melted away at the sight of Rin that one winter morning.
The fault laid with himself. Haru never asked to be talented. If he could, he would make Rin take all of his skill from him. But even if he didn't mean to, it didn't change anything. Haru was the reason that Rin quit his dream.
This wasn't like just people leaving him, just moving on-- Haru hurt someone dear to him. And now he didn't know if they would ever see each other again. Did he even have the right to?
Maybe even this was more than Haru should be allowed. The rational part of Haru's brain told him that there's no way his feelings could reach out like this, that this shore didn't even face Australia. Haru's heart even rebelled against this, hurting at the memory of that winter morning and everything involved.
Still, Haru looked out over the ocean. What was Rin doing now? Would Haru ever see him again? If he did, he knew it would never be the same.
Just--
Maybe...
Haru wanted to laugh at himself for this naïve hope. Instead, a shaky breath came out, becoming visible as it met the cold air. He could not be free as these feelings lingered.
