Bonus Round 3: FSTs

Bonus Round 3: FSTs

This round is CLOSED. Late fills can be posted, but they won't receive points.

We're halfway through all the bonus rounds now. If you're like us, every love song on the radio seems to apply to your OTP. In this round we'd like you to serenade us with some of your top picks!

This round ends at 7PM on July 11 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Submit prompts in the form of a short playlist (3-6 songs) and a ship from any of our nominated fandoms. Submit only the track listing and a link to where they can be listened to; the idea is for others to interpret what you present. You may also link to lyrics if you would like.
  • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Riko & Momoi & Alex). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Riko/Momoi/Alex). Please don't say "Any pairing," either.
  • Create content based on the playlists of others! Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Fills may be in any form you choose (except for another FST of course) as long as they are inspired by/fit the mood of the soundtrack they are filling for.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • You cannot fill your teammates' prompts or your own prompts.

"Koushi – please stay."

The request wasn't as simple as Sugawara wanted it to be. It was already past 9 o'clock in the morning, and he'd spent way too much time at Daichi's house as it was. His phone was going off: ba-ding! bzz bzz ba-ding! bzz bzz ba-ding! bzz bzz and the sound could've been ambulance sirens wailing, from how his heart dropped with every repetition. He didn't want to get up. He wanted to stay.

Daichi's hand caught his shoulder before he could climb out of bed. "Don't look," he mumbled.
"Daichi..."
"This is so selfish of me, and I know that." Daichi took Sugawara's hand in his and kissed the knuckles. "But I don't want this to end yet."
Sugawara's stomach seethed. He bit his bottom lip as the lump in his throat swelled to full size. I don't want to leave I don't want to go back I need you I need this god I'm so in love with you. He forced himself to look away, because if he'd stared for a moment longer, the expression on Daichi's face would have drawn him back without a second thought.
"I have to go."

His toes were already cold, and the floor didn't do much to solve that problem. His briefs and pants sat crumpled in the nearest corner; he put those on first before checking his phone. Daichi winced.

父さん
おい、コウシ
いつ家に帰るか?
答えてくれ
答えてくれぞ、お釜
忙しすぎ?フェラ?
ネコやる?
キモい 笑笑笑

Sugawara covered his eyes with one hand because god if he started crying, Daichi would wrap his arms around his waist and kiss the back of his neck and that would be that. He'd never go back again and he'd be more than happy with himself like that.

ざけんなよ
今帰る

父さん
おまえ、ダマレ!
コノヤロー
早く、母さんは心配してるぞ
売女ぞ、www

"Koushi."
"You already know what he said, so why are you asking?" Sugawara snapped, clenching his phone. Tears dripped down his cheeks and splattered on the screen. Daichi sat up in bed and his gaze burnt two holes through the back of Sugawara's head. "I'm sorry. He's just an asshole. Same crap about me being a faggot and spending all my time sucking dick and taking it up the ass."
"He sure does spend a lot of time thinking about your sex life, for a guy who claims to be straight." Sugawara didn't have a giggle to stifle. "Sorry. Trying to lighten the mood a bit."
"I know."

Sugawara scrubbed the tears from his eyes before walking back to the bed and sitting on the edge, still clutching onto his phone. Daichi shuffled forward and looked over his shoulder. He grimaced. "Christ."
"I just." Sugawara licked his lips. "I hate how he drags my mom into this. Like she's the one who made me gay." Daichi's hand was firm on the nape of his neck, rubbing it back and forth. He was so warm and Sugawara longed for his arms wrapped around his waist again. "I'm so tired. I'm so tired of this."
"I know." Daichi kissed his neck. "I'm sorry."
"I need to go home." Sugawara turned his phone on silent and tossed it into the pile of laundry on the floor. "I really should go home."

He climbed back under the covers and pressed his forehead into Daichi's collarbone. The smell of his sweat and the residual hints of his cologne brought him back to his fictional universe of tender romance; unhinged memories; and quiet, yet passionate evenings.

•••

"Can I come in, please?"

It was another cold night. Sugawara had shown up at the door drenched from head to toe, and the moisture in his hair had already started to turn to frost. Daichi's mother had ushered him in without asking questions; he always liked that about her. Daichi wasn't home from work yet. She invited him to take a bath, because the water was still hot and he was shivering so much, and she'd make him a bowl of udon while he warmed up, and thank you Mrs. Sawamura, but I won't be staying long I'd appreciate the bath though yes a bath would be nice. He didn't like to let her ramble; he never knew what to make of her... motherliness.

The steam made his face flush red. Sugawara held his knees to his chest to try to make the most out of his own body heat until his lips didn't taste like ice anymore. He opened his eyes and watched the water drip from the showerhead. He and Daichi had sex in the bathroom once. It wasn't pleasant because someone had left the soap on the floor and rather than pick it up with his hands like a sensible person, Daichi slid it around with his foot before falling to his mood-killing demise. While it lasted, though, Sugawara enjoyed the intimacy. A slight wind blew in through the vented window.

Sugawara heard Daichi come home: his gait was familiar, and the low ring of his voice made Sugawara smile. His mother whispered to him in the kitchen. His footsteps approached the bathroom tap tap tap tap tap tap "Oh, sh–oot! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to intrude–"
"Sure, you didn't," Sugawara teased. "How can you storm into the bathroom without the expectation that you'll find your lover, in fact, naked in the bath?"
He was in love with the way Daichi's ears turned red when he was embarrassed.
"I–I... well." Daichi scratched the back of his neck and took a half-step into the bathroom. "You have a point there." He leaned over to the shower head and turned it off so it no longer dripped. "Koushi..."
"Can we wait?" Sugawara interrupted. "Until I'm not in the bath? Go eat, I'll be out soon." Daichi's forehead wrinkled. Sugawara exhaled through his nose, his smile widening. He stood in the bath and water dripped all over the floor. Daichi didn't have time to react before Sugawara grabbed onto his tie and tugged him into a kiss. His lips were chapped and tasted like winter. The fuzz on his face from forgetting to shave for a couple of days tickled Sugawara's cheeks. Water soaked through Daichi's dress shirt when Sugawara wrapped his arms around his neck. He shivered at the touch of Daichi's cold hands on his naked hips. "Goodness, don't you wear gloves when it's cold?"
"I lost them on the train, haven't gotten new ones yet," Daichi mumbled, keeping his gaze fixed on anything above Sugawara's chest.
Sugawara kissed down Daichi's neck and held onto him as he stepped out of the bath. "I'll buy you a pair if you grab my towel for me."
"I'd grab it for you, anyway."

It was a weird thing to think about, but Sugawara liked the smell of the towels at Daichi's house. The laundry detergent smelled like lavender, but the Sawamuras put all their linens in a pine cabinet so being wrapped up in one was akin to sitting in a forest. Daichi rubbed Sugawara's skin dry and tied the towel under his armpits. He turned to go fetch a change of clothes, but Sugawara caught him by the sleeve of his shirt and pressed his forehead into his collarbone.
"What is it, Koushi?"
"I wanna go to sleep."
Daichi lifted his chin and kissed him. "You still need clothes."
"No, I don't." He chuckled as his hand wandered down Daichi's chest and palmed his crotch. "You'll suffice."
"W-Wait, now? Mom is still awake...!"
"No, not now, dummy. When she goes to bed." Sugawara paused before looking up at Daichi, worry bleeding into his eyes. "I mean. If you don't mind me staying over."
Daichi shook his head. "Of course I don't. But... we'll talk about what happened?"
"Nothing happened," came the knee-jerk reaction. Daichi shattered his illusion with a hardened stare. "Okay, yes. We'll talk about it."
"And you'll eat." He threaded his fingers through Sugawara's hair. "You need to."
"... Okay."

•••

"For all the crap I have to go through, I still find you more than worth it."

Daichi wiped a tear from Sugawara's cheek. "I love you."
"I love you."
"I love you."
"I love you."

•••

"He's eighteen, and he's moving in with me."

Daichi always had the words when Sugawara couldn't bring himself to speak. This didn't, however, make him a good negotiator. Then again, who could be a good negotiator with a bigoted drunkard?
"What, near your little fag university?" Sugawara covered his face so he didn't have to face his father. "That why you applied there, you shit? So you could be with your hairy faggot boyfriend?"
"He wanted to go there first," Daichi corrected, "and I applied there to be with him."
"Un-fucking-believable." His father waved his can of beer around like a weapon and Sugawara cringed. "Fucking great. I'm paying through the nose so my son can take it up the ass for four years? No, fuck you!" Kicking, smashing, strangled yells and a gasp from Sugawara's mother.
"Honey, please–"
"Fuck you! I'm not paying for this fairy to sleep around at some shit university!"
Sugawara shuddered and Daichi's temper flared. "If you actually cared, you'd know that Koushi got a full scholarship!"

The room fell silent for a long time.

"I'm going with him," Sugawara whispered, "and you can't stop me."

•••

"I've never felt this healthy before."

Sugawara dropped his bags as soon as he walked through the door of his – their – new apartment. His forehead shined from sweat and he rubbed it off with the sleeve of his shirt. "I feel free. We made it."
"Uh-uh," came Daichi's voice from behind him, followed by a grunt as he let down his suitcases with a heavy thud. "You made it. I didn't have to go through the crapper to get here."
"You're right. You didn't do anything. You just sat around looking pretty and I pulled myself out of the crapper."
"Everyone needs a plumber every now and then to keep the water flowing."
"Mmhmm." Sugawara turned toward Daichi and caught him in an intimate embrace. "You really get my water flowing, Plumber Boy."
Daichi laughed. "If you're trying to get me into bed, terrible lines like that aren't getting you anywhere."
"C'mon, we have a new bed. Might as well break it in."

They both tripped over the bags scattered across the floor on their way to the bedroom. The mattress was bare and the fabric irritated Sugawara's skin, but as Daichi pulled off his shirt and unbuttoned his own, he was certain it wouldn't be much of an issue. He arched his back into Daichi's roaming mouth and wiggled his hips: take off my pants suck me off god I want you so bad fuck me hard baby. Daichi was always so eager to please.

Little did Sugawara care if the walls were thin or not – they weren't making love at 1 AM anymore, after Daichi's mother had finally gone to bed and hoping the bed's quiet creaking wouldn't wake her. He groaned and thrusted into Daichi's mouth, fingers curling into his shaggy hair. His legs crossed over Daichi's back and his toenails weren't trimmed, but Daichi liked it when Sugawara scratched down his back. It was okay. They were okay. More than okay. Sugawara was getting his dick sucked, how bad could he be doing?

Daichi conjured lubricant from nowhere and Sugawara didn't bother to ask about it. The thought of Daichi carrying lube in his pocket all day in anticipation of sex upon their arrival only served to turn on Sugawara more. Fuck was the only word on his mind when Daichi pressed two thick fingers against his hole and slid his tongue into his gasping mouth.

The mattress complained under the force of Daichi's thrusts. Sugawara could find no grip on the mattress onto which to hold and instead held the backs of his thighs. Daichi's low moans filled his ears and the color of his flushed skin took over his vision and all he could say in response to it all was I love you so so much with only a moment to spare before his muscles spasmed. He clenched his eyes shut. He burned this moment into his memory.

"I love you for all that you are."

He misses him.

Makoto's not used to missing him; they've grown together, and if there was a person Makoto knew as well as he knew himself--maybe even better than himself--it was Haruka Nanase.

He'd spent years learning, unlearning, relearning as the boy shed new layers as time passed by, discovering those facets of his that he'd develop after a certain experiences, uncovering the lessons he'd learn after occurrences.

For someone who's endlessly in love with the water, Haruka sure grew bigger wings than the most majestic of birds. Makoto's in Tokyo; loud, sleepless Tokyo, and Haruka is somewhere in the other side of the world.

Makoto looks up at the ceiling. It's around 2am, and for Haru it must be around 10am. He thinks he must be with Rin, teasing him with sharp smiles and firing him up. Thinking about it makes Makoto smile.

He wonders if Haru thinks about him, too.

-

He watches all of his swimming competitions on TV, and although he is alone and Haru can't hear him, he cheers as loud as he can, throwing fists in the air as Haru gets closer and closer to the finish line.

As if his voice could somehow reach Haru and give him a final push, a final helping hand that'd deliver him straight to victory.

He guesses it's not something Haru needs, but it is something Makoto is willing to give.

-

Every time Haru comes back home, he is unchanged. Makoto doesn't have to relearn him, he greets his champion at the airport and offers to carry his luggage and Haru weakly protests, but Makoto can clearly see how his shoulders bend under the exhaustion.

He's not talkative, but words have never been a big part of their lives. They managed to do without, most of the time.

But Haru will tell him about the times Rin dragged him across the city, looking for new places to visit, for ways to spend their time in a more "efficient" and "fun" matter.

(Haru always makes funny faces, trying to imitate Rin.)

Makoto knows if it were up to Haru, he'd spend most of his time at the pool of the hotels they usually stay in.

Haru smells like chlorine still, even after the first shower they take as they go back home, and when he falls asleep he instinctively curls around Makoto's form, slipping his hands in his sweater as the movie runs in the background.

The couch is probably not the most comfortable place for Haru to sleep after long flights, but as Makoto runs his fingers between black wet strands of hair and feels--hears--Haru's steady and calm breathing, he just smiles and closes his eyes himself.

"This is the kind of thing you like to sing?"

Teshima would know that voice through any haze of drunken laughter, through any buzz of light and screaming, even through the crash and fire of a ship close to falling apart.

"Like it, Manami?" They moved to lean against the door frame, fingers still posed as though they hadn't passed off the microphone when they left the karaoke box. "S'my new English pop medley. It's -" It wasn't until after Manami caught them and dropped them just as quickly, that Teshima realized they had entirely missed the wall.

It took Manami longer to collect itself, hands raised and pressed together with steely intensity. "Enough to knock you off your feet?" It was near instinct, at this point - catching and expecting to be caught in return. The feeling being set marrow deep didn't make it any less humiliating.

Teshima raised their hands in a nonchalant shrug, refusing to note or react to their new standing on the floor. "Enough to leave you breathless!" It was funnier than it had any right to be at that moment, laughing as they went on. "An artist is always going to be the most affected by their own," and they paused to hiccup, losing the next word until they clapped their hands and made Manami half-jump in surprise. "Work! That's it."

It lost its smile for one full moment, falling through a grimace of shock and dead distaste, before it set its shoulders as straight as its persona. "I suppose I'll just never understand." It swung its arms behind its back, in tune with how it floated out of the way of other party-goers. "It's nice that you have so much free time that you could explore true art like this. Make the most of what you have left, right?"

They laughed. "That goes without saying." After a glass of wine, a bet of four shots, and too much of something that left them feeling as though they were sweating gasoline, it was too easy to forget. Even laying there, Teshima felt as though they were on a rolling ship, remembering that, remembering - they rubbed their eyes. "I figured, if I'm making such strides in missions, what's a little more to my resume? It'll make it more interesting when they write my biography." Singing trickled out from the box, through the cracked door, making the worries float away again with the celebratory atmosphere. It was foolish to keep laying out here, tipsy people more often treading over their hair than the flashing carpet around them. But Manami seemed unwilling to budge from their apathetic vigil, so they went on musing. "Maybe I'll do venues and work as a wedding singer."

It snickered, quiet, distant. "It fits you." Only at that did it shift, sinking feather-light to crouch at their side. "Thank goodness I won't be here for those."

"Come on, Manami." Five missions, ten, twenty, that they could remember, faintly through their haze. "Junta Teshima, from the forefront of the Space Frontier movement, here to regale party-goers with tales of the galaxy and their favorite 80s rock." But as much time as they had spent with it, talking to Manami still felt like a tightrope made of the most delicate silk. "I can't make it a proper headline at all if Sangaku Manami, the famous first true volunteer for warp travel, wasn't there to catcall during my amazing rendition of Tom Petty."

It stared at them, and they could have sworn it was growing five more eyes just to add to its contempt. Even if they knew it was just the alcohol, even if they would never have the strange sort of visions Manami always mentioned with uncomfortable ease. They were rambling - they were stalling.

"Sounds like a pretty plan you've got," it responded, too quick in the moment of silence they took to pull together what they had invited it to this party to say. "But considering I don't know who that is," and it leaned close, as though it had anti-grav in its shoes, floating upside down, just to whisper, "I think I'll pass." Easy to get caught up in.

Easy enough that when it stood, they were able to pull themself up to follow, close at its heels. Teshima didn't have a notable tolerance for alcohol, didn't have particularly good balance, knew too well their own lack in talent - every reason they were a part of the most dangerous sector of the national space program. But that stubbornness was why they were alive, absolutely, and just as unfortunately terribly easily attached to fights they couldn't win, battles they would always struggle to take regardless.

"Guess I'll just have to shove it on you before then." Teshima discretely grabbed a drink from a platter, as it floated past on rotation through the floor, to push into Manami's hands. In the moment it paused, caught between apathy and confusion, they went on. "I've got the perfect tune for you."

It dipped its fingers into the glass, pretending to be more entertained by fishing through it. "In English?" Ice slid in a circle to its palm, clacking muted by the dull thrum of music in the rooms around. "It would be wasted on me, don't you think?"

There was a plan, they had made, as though they could have been a captain if they'd made it into commanding courses, instead of having to accept the worst roles, everything that anyone else was good enough to avoid - or maybe rational enough to refuse. "It's different. See, most people clamor happily to hear it, that's not really a game. That's just sharing." Teshima slid their arm around its shoulders, even as it subtly stepped away, intent only obvious from a petulant smile. "Still fun, but there's something really special about dragging someone who doesn't care into being interested." They weren't a captain and Manami wasn't theirs to command. But it was their partner, as forced an assignment it had been, all those months ago. "So you see, there's no point if it's not you."

That should have been the right thing to say. It leaned against the wall. "Sorry," it said, farther from them, giving much more than a simple cold shoulder. "But I don't have time for games. I was given very particular orders, after all."

"So," Teshima shook their head, trying to create a properly disbelieving tone, until it interrupted their attempt to try walk around them. Alcohol and momentary panic were a bad combination, and they exclaimed, "You're planning on just giving up now?" They slammed a hand against the wall to keep it from leaving, hard enough to give rise to disturbed guests in another room. They knew, even as they pulled themself back to a more controlled flippancy, they were giving too much away. "If you're one of the elite trailblazers," they said, flashing through every excuse they knew, "What sort of example are you proving to everyone around you?" Weak, that was weak, because they knew no one expected anything from either of them except success or -

Their train of thought was cut off by someone tripping against their side, knocking a drink across their shirt. More distracting, maybe, was Manami sputtering into laughter - the first time that entire night.

Teshima's mouth ran, freely as ever, just to ask, "Did I say something funny?"

"Oh ... well, it was a cute joke and all." It flicked ice between their eyes and smoothly ducked under their arm. "After all, we don't need English where we're going."

"You sure about that?" They turned, despite themself, to face it, to see it standing away, not a hint of willingness to turn back evident in its back. "You never know what'll happen, Manami."

It raised the glass up, maybe taking a sip. "Maybe. In this case, though ..." Its hair shifted, and they wanted it to look at them, they wanted to catch it and keep it standing right there, but it knew their game too well at this point. "I'm really quite sure." Manami paused, only a sliver of their face visible through the hair falling against it, and asked, "Are you?"

"Well, if I'm being honest," Teshima said, through the weight that dropped in their gut, "My English sucks, too."

It hummed. "If that's an issue, at this point ... you're welcome to leave."

No Major Content Warnings Minor warning for smoking, cigarettes.

425 words

The smoke seeps from his lips like a serpent, flowing and coiling in the cold air around him. He’s got one hand in the back pocket of Tobio’s jeans, the other holding the cigarette. He’d offered Tobio a drag and he’d shaken his head. He stood close enough that surely he was breathing the smoke almost as much as Tooru but still he shook his head. The streetlight buzzed above them and their skin glowed orange in its light.

“Are you sure, Tobio-chan?” Tooru breathed into his ear after taking another drag and the smoke enveloped them both. To his credit Tobio didn’t choke. Good boy.

“Just take me home.” He replied and Tooru’s hand flexed where it was flat against his ass. He flicked the ash off his cigarette and took another drag, exhaling through his nose. He laughed softly.

“Soon enough. I’m not letting you out of my sight until then. You’re mine, remember?” He could feel how Tobio shivered at the words and he liked it. He moved his hand, pulling it from the pocket to wrap it around Tobio’s opposite hip, pulling him closer so that his hip was pressed against the front of Tooru’s jeans. “Come here.” He breathed, unable to keep the smile from his face.

Already pressed together, Tobio couldn’t come much closer except to lean his body over, twisted so that they faced each other, and placed a hand on Oikawa’s waist.

Tobio’s eyes followed his lips as Tooru took another drag, lingering there, betraying his want. The cigarette was down to the filter now and he dropped it and pressed it beneath his heel. He didn’t exhale, holding the smoke in his lungs and mouth, until he grabbed Tobio’s jaw, not hard, but firm and brought their lips together.

He responded well, opening his mouth just the way Tooru wanted so that he could breathe the smoke into him. He did choke this time, just a little, and Tooru could feel the constriction of his throat against his fingertips where they trailed down his neck.

“I almost want to smoke another, so we can do that again.” He said against Tobio’s lips and he smiled slightly in response.

“Just take me home.” He repeated. Their hips were touching and Tooru wanted him so badly he could hardly wait to get him home. He wanted him in bed, spread out beneath him, naked and writhing, beautiful and so incredibly broken.

“Absolutely.” Tooru responded. He took Tobio’s hand and led him into the night.

1300 words

Aoyagi had a shift at the bar that night. This meant a twenty-minute bike ride as soon as he was off at the Tadokoro bakery, with a five-minute window to find something to eat and check his phone for the evening before jumping into wiping tables and mixing drinks. It sounded hectic but wasn't all that awful in practice; Aoyagi worked there Wednesday and Thursday nights and they were nowhere near any offices, which meant that he was mostly stuck cleaning glasses and daydreaming about whatever book he'd been reading that week.

He put his apron on and stepped behind the bar counter, busying himself by wiping it down before any customers showed up. Aoyagi had been in a Murakami kind of mood for the past two weeks; he'd finished After Dark upon Teshima's recommendation a couple of years ago and had moved on to The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, though he was only half a chapter in. Aoyagi hung up the cloth he was using, feeling his phone buzz in his back pocket. He quickly surveyed his surroundings.

Through the corner of his eye, he saw his manager's sharp stare bore holes into him, as though she was daring him to check his messages even though she would have no way of knowing he'd received a text. Aoyagi chose to ignore it, turning to take their first customer's order as he sat down behind the bar. It was probably Teshima, anyway. Who else would it be? Maybe it was best that he waited. Actually kept a distance, for once.

They weren't supposed to be together, not the way they were. Things had changed from when they were in their third year of high school where they kissed in the bike shed after practice and held hands under the table in chemistry class. When Teshima stepped onto the train that would take him to Tokyo for college they'd agreed that it was for the best that they returned to being friends, and just that. Aoyagi was going to America in half a year for art school, they would be too far away from each other to maintain any sort of romantic relationship, and there remained the fact that they were both boys.

Aoyagi knew that Teshima knew: it would be better for him if he settled down, got a bank job, and found a girlfriend like he'd promised himself he would back in first year. There was no hope for Aoyagi, not in the girlfriend department at least, but one day Teshima would look at a girl the way he'd looked at him when they first met. They'd lock eyes and in that moment, Teshima would know-- just know that she was going to be something to him, feel the same connection he had with Aoyagi the first day they met, the same spark of electricity. She would be safe for him to talk about at work and hold in public, outside of the confines of their few friends who knew their secret. The thought made his heart clench and he began mixing the customer's drink, vodka with a dash of yuzu, the bar's specialty.

The rest of the night proceeded as usual, with customers flitting in and out, no more than three or four at a time, nothing he couldn't handle. A couple of people had difficult orders and an American tourist kept insisting on leaving him what she kept referring to as a "tip", which he had to politely try to decline in his limited English. It was almost closing time when the door creaked open once again, and Aoyagi's gaze drifted towards it to see who was walking in. A blue button-down, jeans, and a familiar head of curly hair--

It was like he had been punched in the chest.

"Haji-- Aoyagi! Nice to see you here. I was just stopping by."

Teshima smiled, actually smiled as he oh-so-casually strolled in, dragging a suitcase behind. He climbed onto a barstool, sitting across where Aoyagi was. "My class tomorrow got canceled and I only have one class Friday night, so I decided to come back to visit my parents and thought I'd come to say hi."

"Junta." The name was spoken with a mixture of fondness and exasperation.

We're supposed to be broken up.

Teshima sighed.

"I know." But what Teshima knew he should do and what he ended up doing always told two completely different stories. This was the boy who was supposed to quit cycling and find a part-time job in high school, after all. Besides, Aoyagi could read the thoughts behind his eyes: I missed you. Teshima drummed his fingers on the table.

"Can you get me an--" Asahi beer, please?

"Okay."

Aoyagi poured his ex-boyfriend his drink, watching Teshima as he pulled out his phone to send a text. Presumably to his parents, presumably I'm back. It had been less than a month since he'd left for Tokyo, and he was already visiting Chiba. What an idiot, he thought to himself, though he couldn’t fight the upwards tugging of his lips. He would be lying if he said that it wasn't kind of endearing-- Teshima always picked his heart over his head when everything was all said and done, even if he would fight tooth and nail and argue otherwise.

He handed Teshima the glass and he took a long, quiet chug of the drink.

“Thanks. Of course you’d remember what beer I like. Hey,” he said, eyes lighting up the way they did when he thought of a new idea, or wanted to talk about a new book, “Remember how you, me and Koga got drunk together after the third day of the Inter-High? To drown our sorrows after losing?”

“Yeah.” We found Tadokoro while we were half stumbling-around and you started yelling that he couldn’t catch you or stop you because he wasn’t your real dad. Even if I wanted, I could never forget.

The two of them sat there in silence for a while, Junta idly swirling the remainder of his drink in its glass before speaking up again.

“Aoyagi, I’m sorry—”

“We both decided on this. It’s not your fault.” His voice was calm, he hoped, or at least calm enough to hide the rapid fluttering in his chest. No, it was Aoyagi’s fault, for not fighting harder, for not pushing more. It had been a conclusion they’d come to together but if he had changed his mind at the last minute, Junta would have agreed. His manager was starting to glare at him again and he picked up the cloth and a random glass, wiping it just for the sake of looking busy. Junta laughed bitterly, setting the glass down.

“This isn’t the right place to talk about this, is it,” he said, leaning forward and resting his chin on his hands. Aoyagi shrugged, wiping the counter down for what felt like the fiftieth time that evening. It was a wonder that they actually made enough of a profit at the bar to stay in business. Junta was looking out the window now, taking in the not-so-foreign view of Chiba late at night. Even if he wasn’t saying anything, Aoyagi heard his thoughts loud and clear.

We don’t have to talk about how things were, really.

I just wanted to see you.

Aoyagi picked his ex-boyfriend’s glass up from where it sat, knowing that he wasn’t going to drink any more. There was really no saying no to Junta, not when he wanted something badly enough: there was no sense trying to resist it, or at least not allowing him to try. Waiting until his manager’s back was turned, Aoyagi leaned in to whisper in his ear.

“My shift’s ending soon. We can head back together.”

i'm sorry

aaaa, i'm sorry, i wanted to do more with this but couldn't get it to gel. maybe i'll try again when i have more time and energy. but ty for this prompt, it's lovely.

"i was going to quit," mihashi admits years later, the steam billowing from the hot pot not enough to veil the brightness of his eyes. "but takashima-san invited me to tokyo."

tanba figures he should say something about fate, maybe, considering the seibu lions jacket draped over the back of mihashi's chair, but he's never been particularly good with words. "it's good that you went," he says, chasing a particularly slippery bit of fishcake with his chopsticks.

"yes," mihashi says, looking very determined, the sort of look he gets when there's a runner on third and two outs, "or i would never have met you."

there's a pause and then tanba laughs. "look at you," he says. "you've sure learned to talk."

"really," mihashi says, heat from the burner lending him a bit of cover for the redness of his face. "thank you."

tanba shakes his head. "no," he says. "you got here under your own power."

*

we're working hard, the mail from mihashi reads, i hope university is treating you well.

tanba scrolls through the rest of his messages — updates from manaka, reminders from chris — and drops his phone on the mattress with a thud. he has homework to do but he's exhausted, body heavy and slow with effort. he's readjusting, is what chris says, to having a body that does nothing but baseball. eventually, it'll feel good.

i've been watching, tanba types out, after he's changed and brushed his teeth. you're doing well.

it's true. it's vast change from last year, mihashi stuttering and apologizing, standing on the mound like he wasn't convinced he deserved to be there.

you can't pitch like that, tanba told him, watching his shoulders heave in the cloudy moonlight. you're carrying the team out there. trust that you're there for a reason if you can't trust anything else.

he remembers that feeling, still gets it clawing up his throat some nights, the restless, consuming need to be better without knowing how. he wasn't the ace he wanted to be back then, but he's trying again, here. he'll do better. they'll both make good.

*

tanba recognizes something wounded in the new first year pitcher immediately, the darting eyes, the inward-turning set of his shoulders. he stumbles over his name (mihashi something) and his school (unintelligible), but his voice is clear when he says, "i want to pitch." he seems horrified by it in the next moment, nervous twist of his mouth mirrored in his hands, neck, shoulders, like he expects to be punished for it. it's familiar in an unsettling way, and tanba is almost certain he feels ryousuke's amused gaze burning on his back. he ignores it, but he can't help glancing back at mihashi when first string breaks off for practice.

"he's very dedicated," he hears rei say to katoka later. "and his fastball is very peculiar. it's slow, but with the proper training he could be very versatile." they're both watching mihashi in the throng of first years shuffling across the field, jostled to one side or the other and looking a bit like someone lost at sea.

"i see," is all kataoka says, and tanba finishes his water and leaves the dugout.

Time to cloak my hell ship in dignity, and, by necessity of the genre... some religious imagery. Please don't feel bound to interpret the prompt that way, I just went for the angriest-sounding major choral latin that I've personally sung.

1 - O Fortuna (yeah that's right)
2 - Dies Irae
3 - Olim Lacus Colueram (Carmina Burana 12, mostly just for Manami, mostly the lyrics)
4 - Sancta Mater (louder than the last piece)
5 - if you really want to, just play O Fortuna again to bookend it.
