Bonus Round 4: Official Art

Bonus Round 4: Official Art

This round is CLOSED. Late fills can be posted, but they won't receive points.

Memorable canon moments, bizarre omakes, tantalizing magazine spreads—this is the round to explore them all. Bring out your screencaps, promotional art, and manga pages, and let's talk about what really happened.
Please read the rules carefully before posting!

RULES
  • Submit prompts in the form of a canon screencap from one of our nominated fandoms along with a ship. Screencaps can be from an anime or manga, as well as any other kind of offshoot media, e.g. official art, drama CD covers, light novel illustrations, magazine covers, and/or caps from games. Doujinshi, fan-made games or any other fan-created work should not be prompted, even if you receive permission. Only prompt screencaps that are taken from a piece of canon media.
  • Keep your prompt concise. Don't prompt a whole manga chapter, for example.
  • Upload the cap somewhere (imgur works well) and post here with the images themselves or a link to them.
  • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Riko & Momoi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Riko/Momoi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work inspired by the cap.
  • Fills can be directly connected to the cap, e.g. panel redraws or writing fic that fleshes out the moment that was capped or that fleshes out what happened directly before/after, but fills can also be more indirectly linked. As long as the work is somehow inspired by the cap, it counts.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

The spring air was cool on Ikejiri Hayato’s skin after volleyball practice that particular night. His feet were grazing the sand underneath the swingset his sat in, tears forming at the corners of his eyes from the realization that soon would be his last game of his junior high volleyball career and his final game with him.

Sawamura Daichi.

The boy that swung on the swingset next to him.

Ikejiri’s eyes couldn’t pull away from Daichi if he tried. Out of anyone Ikejiri had ever met, he’s never known someone with the resolve in Daichi’s voice, his stance on the court, his everything. Daichi was a foundation on which Ikejiri could build so many dreams.

But dreams can crumble when that foundation is close to drifting away.

“Daichi,” Ikejiri mumbled, watching the boy dig his heels into the sand under the swings to slow his swing to a stop, “Did you really mean that the other day?”

“Huh? Mean what?” Daichi tilted his head slightly in confusion.

“When you said ‘We'll never win if we don't believe we can?’ Even though we lost,” Ikejiri’s eyesight was muddying and not cool Hayato, now’s not the time to cry.

Daichi’s blank stare warmed into a smile as he reached his hand from the chain of the swing to Ikejiri’s shoulder. Ikejiri shuttered at the touch. In the lighting of the streetlamp over the park, Daichi’s features were accentuated and in, in that moment, Ikejiri felt as though his heart was going to burst out of his chest.

How can anyone be this gorgeous, Ikejiri gulped the thought down and hid in as far from his tongue as possible.

“Hayato, it’s simple; because I believe in us,” Daichi said, nodding once.

Ikejiri could have fallen over from cardiac arrest. The way Daichi worded that could have been interpreted as “us” being the team, and deep down, Ikejiri knew that.

But Ikejiri realized, then, that he wished more than anything, that “us” meant the two of them, together.

But he knew better.

“But we won’t be a team anymore soon,” Ikejiri felt his breath hitch, the tears in his eyes falling.

“Mm, that’s true,” Daichi looked up into the night sky and kicked his feet under the swing, “But just because we won’t be on the same team, doesn’t mean we can’t play together again.”

Ikejiri’s tears continued to flow, the pain in his heart still deep but the promise of playing together again.

We’ll definitely play again, Sawamura Daichi….

“...Ikejiri?” Daichi tilted his head, standing across from Ikejiri after Karasuno defeated Tokonami in the Inter High preliminaries.

“Nothing,” Ikejiri averted his gaze down from Daichi, a blush crossing his face, “I was just… thinking of when we were in Junior High….”

participant 420!

Ikejiri couldn't quite pinpoint the minute he realized he had a crush on the volleyball captain. The volleyball captain's name was Sawamura Daichi, and he was also Ikeijiri's best friend. Ikeijiri lay in his bed at nights, thinking of the way Daichi would instruct their team, tell them to not give up even when Ikeijiri was too tired to move on, would lie on Ikejiri's bed and ponder over the pronunciation of English words while Ikeijiri tried hard to make it not obvious that he was listening to the way Daichi's lips sounded over every word.

Daichi was already at practice when Ikejiri came in the next morning. He was panting, even though he was alone -- no one else in the club had come yet. Ikejiri usually came as late as they did, but he knew Daichi came here first, early in the mornings.

Daichi turned to him when he arrived, a surprised expression on his face. "Ikejiri," he said.

Ikejiri let his bag slip from his shoulders, smiling. There were damp spots of sweat under Daichi's chin, clear down his neck.

"Hi Daichi," said Ikejiri. "Mind if I join you this morning?"

"No, of course not," Daichi said generously.

He had been practicing his receives against the wall, he told Ikejiri as Ikejiri peeled his jacket off. They'd already lost the inter highs and summer was approaching; the walk to school had been humid, beating on the back of Ikejiri's neck.

It was worth it, though, having Daichi in his jersey, shorts high on his thighs, teaching Ikejiri how to bend properly to receive a serve or an attack. Daichi had read up on it last night, he told Ikejiri, about how to become better at it, how receives were one of the most vital components of volleyball. As long as you don't let the ball hit the ground on your side of the net, you still have a chance at winning.

Ikejiri watched the life in Daichi's eyes as he told him this. Sometimes Ikejiri thought he should be jealous -- of a sport, of all things -- but it was what made Daichi such a powerful leader. It was what made him leader in the first place, while Ikejiri was here to follow, enjoy, listen to Daichi's words. Daichi loved the sport, and Ikeijiri, he was in love with Daichi.

The rest of their teammates came eventually, mostly twenty minutes after practice was supposed to start. Daichi scolded them, and, later, told Ikejiri that he was going to talk to Michimiya about her team, if they came to practices this late. Ikejiri smiled and nodded; Daichi and Michimiya were good friends, led their teams in different ways, but still able to sit down next to each other and nudge and talk, when Ikejiri was on the other side of the table. Ikejiri supposed they looked good together, though Daichi had told him in their second year that he didn't like girls, and Michimiya was just a friend to him.

That could've gotten Ikejiri's hopes up; but now, he watched as Daichi's sole focus was volleyball. The sport, the game, the fire behind his eyes as he watched the ball soar in the air, determined to get it during their mock match. He did, and his team -- their team, Ikejiri was on his side -- won. Daichi laughed as some of their teammates tackled him just as the bell rang.

Ikejiri and Daichi got themselves cleaned up together. Daichi said, "Too bad they didn't come here earlier, we could've had a longer game." He smiled at Ikejiri. "At least we got to practice together."

Ikejiri returned the smile -- easy, not as strong as he would've liked. "Yeah," he said, turning away.

*

Three years later, Ikejiri watched the TV as Daichi stepped out onto the court in Tokyo, and knew that this fate was never for him.
