Bonus Bonus Round: Encore

Bonus Bonus Round: Encore

SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

This is your last chance to get fills for unloved prompts from all previous rounds. Let's party!

(Pay attention to the prompt format this round, located below; it's different from previous rounds. Don't forget about the "Recs" bonus round either!)

This round ends at 7PM on August 22 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • NO NEW PROMPTS ALLOWED. It has to be a repost from a previous bonus round.
  • You can repeat any previous bonus round prompt, whether it received fill(s) or not.
  • You can repeat your own prompts.
  • One prompt per post, post as many times as you want.
  • If you're posting a prompt that's not yours originally, please check the toplevels to avoid posting repeats.
  • Fills work the same way as every other round: don't fill your own or your teammates' prompts, including old reposted prompts. It works like this:
    • Your teammate posts a prompt that was originally posted by a different team? You can fill that.
    • Someone else posts a prompt originally created by you or your teammate? You cannot fill that.
    • You post a prompt originally posted by another team? You can't fill that either.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

The night air on the edge of the lake was warm and heavy with sound – of wind whistling through trees, of insect screaming, so on and so on, blending together in the unmistakable background hum of summer. Imaizumi looks out at the water, rippling slightly with the subtle breeze, kicking up humid gusts over the shore. He’s so wrapped up in it all that he doesn’t realize that anyone is standing next to him until they clear their throat.

Imaizumi jumps, then instantly goes rigid, overcompensating. Kinjou just gazes at him placidly over the rims of his glasses, a smile that is just hardly there crimping his lips at the edges.

“Kinjou.”

Kinjou nods. “Imaizumi.”

“I’m sorry, I–” He stops quickly, realizing he has nothing to apologize for. He was here first; and even if he wasn’t, it’s not as if it would matter.

“On the contrary. I’m sorry I startled you,” Kinjou says. He looks out to the lake, where Imaizumi had been staring earlier. “You seemed far away.”

Imaizumi hums, turning back towards the lake. He realizes that his fist is clenched and he doesn’t remember clenching it.

“Are you thinking about the race tomorrow?” Kinjou asks. “Or, perhaps, a different race?”

Imaizumi looks at him through the corner of his eye, not turning more than needed. “What do you mean?”

“I don’t mean to be presumptuous, of course,” Kinjou says. “But I was afraid you were… dwelling on something.”

Imaizumi looks at him directly now. “Something?”

Kinjou shrugs. “Perhaps that cyclist. The one from Kyofushi.”

Imaizumi looks away, and says nothing. Kinjou is right, of course. He’s always right. Imaizumi doesn’t feel like answering is necessary.

Kinjou nods. “There’s nothing wrong with that. We’ll certainly see him again, tomorrow. But…”

Imaizumi knows the pause is for his benefit. He looks to Kinjou, and blinks when Kinjou is no longer in his line of sight. He looks down to find him splaying his hand on the ground, looking for something. When he stands again, he has a flattened stone clutched in his fingers. He tosses it lightly in the air, letting it fall neatly into his palm.

“I doubt it’s tomorrow you’re thinking about. Or even today,” Kinjou says. “Forgive me for making assumptions, but I believe you were far in the past.”

Imaizumi hesitates, but slowly nods.

“It’s not good to hold onto that,” Kinou says, tossing the stone again. This time, when it lands in his palm, his fingers engulf it immediately. He winds up and pitches it at the lake, skipping it across the surface. It bounces three times before sinking. “You don’t have to forget it,” Kinjou continues. “But you need to let it go.”

With his other hand, Kinjou tosses something else at Imaizumi. He catches it, and with some surprise he realizes it’s the same stone.

“Or else it will just come back,” Kinjou finishes.

Imaizumi turns the stone over in his hands.

They fall into silence, relatively. The background hum still fills the air around them, but now Imaizumi doesn’t feel lost within it. It thrums between him and Kinjou, and the lack of words isn’t awkward. It’s thoughtful. It’s productive.

It’s meaningful.

Imaizumi wishes he had the cunning to cut to the heart of the matter like that. Kinjou does it so elegantly, effortlessly. He’s the skipping stone on the pond, defying gravity.

Or so it seems by all appearances, Imaizumi thinks. He has to remind himself, with some effort, that Kinjou is also human. Kinjou has to have doubts. Has to have things he needs to leave behind.

When Imaizumi looks up, Kinjou is still staring serenely at the lake, his hands folded behind his back at he lets the moment wash over him. Imaizumi doubts then that Kinjou could ever be flappable. But if he was…

Imaizumi turns the stone over once again. More than anything, he realizes that he wants to repay Kinjou. To be that serene, that knowing, a grounding force of calm, for Kinjou. He wants to be the one that inspires Kinjou, even just for once.

He throws the stone in the air and catches it in his palm.

“I don’t know how to skip stones,” Imaizumi says finally.

Kinjou smiles. “It’s not difficult. It requires practice, but that should be nothing you’re unfamiliar with.”

Imaizumi smiles slightly as well. “You’re right, of course.” He winds back up, clutching the stone firmly before pitching it.

It hits the water and sinks.

Kinjou huffs out a laugh. “You’ll get it.”

He will, Imaizumi decides. Even if he has to give it everything he has, he’ll get it.
