Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

no tags, 1523 words , Kindaichi/Kunimi. SORRY I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT JAPANESE WEDDINGS

The worst part, Akira thought, was that Yuutarou genuinely hadn't expect things to go south the moment Hanamaki offered to help plan their wedding.

"Hanamaki-senpai is an event planner," Yuutarou had explained honestly while looking down at his ipad, his hair still wet and his glasses threatening to fall off the bridge of his nose every time Yuutarou broke a combo. "He planned movie premiers and even Kitagawa Keiko's wedding!"

Akira had absently toweled at his own hair while watching his best friend turned boyfriend turned fiancé make distressed noises over an idol-themed rhythm game. "Hanamaki-senpai is the personal assistant of an event planner. His boss planned Kitagawa Keiko's wedding. She's divorced now."

That had jolted Yuutarou out of his tapping enough to open his mouth, then close it. "We're not getting divorced, I hope."

Akira just laughed and took a seat, half on the couch and half on Yuutarou's lap. "We're not even married yet." Then he had had kissed Yuutarou and forgotten about anyone from their old volleyball team.

In retrospect, that was Akira's first fatal mistake.

His second mistake was getting sucked into helping with the new merger at work, defaulting any and all wedding planning to Yuutarou. The most Akira had done was drop printed invitations onto his coworkers' desks and clear some vacation dates with his boss. Akira didn't have a lot of people on his invite list. His family had known about Yuutarou since their Seijou days, and Akira's mother seemed more concerned about her vegetable garden than the upcoming matrimony of her only son and his childhood friend. The only person he actually cared about inviting was Ami-chan, Akira's thesis project partner from university who enjoyed teasing Yuutarou every time he brought food for them during agonizing periods of report writing.

His third mistake was spending too much time with Oikawa Tooru (former senpai, current celebrity athlete) to normalize Oikawa's erratic behavior. Akira worked with enough overwhelmingly ambitious people in his life to turn a blind eye to their enthusiasm. So when Oikawa sighed fondly over the phone at the news of their engagement, Akira had missed the glaring signs of impeding danger.

Everything comes to a halt when a scheduled venue visit with Hanamaki turns into a tour of a renovated theater ballroom. "No," Akira says the moment he spots the chandeliers hanging off the ceiling. He can feel Yuutarou thrumming with nervous energy next to him while the venue staff looks curiously between them.

"No?" Hanamaki raises an eyebrow. "Is this ballroom not large enough for your taste?"

Akira frowns. "Not large enough? It's too large."

Hanamaki gives him a blank look that used to be reserved for Oikawa's more dramatic moments. "There are 200 people on your guest list."

"What?" Akira says as Hanamaki begins scrolling through something on his phone.

"Kindaichi okay'ed them."

"What." Akira says again and grabs onto Yuutarou's arm as his fiancé tries to escape to the bathroom. "Show me."

Hanamaki just shrugs and hands over his phone. "We're on our fourth revision." He's off to speak to the venue guide, giving Akira enough time to tighten his grip on Yuutarou's arm while scanning through the list.

The first thing that comes to mind is: "Why is Kageyama Tobio on the guest list for our wedding?"

Yuutarou makes a small noise that sounds like "Oikawa-senpai suggested it?"

The questions Akira wants to ask are: Are you marrying Oikawa-senpai? Why are you such a push over? Why would Kageyama attend our wedding? Instead, he takes a deep breath and looks at Yuutarou. "What else did Oikawa-senpai suggest?"

"A playlist for the reception?" Yuutarou offers, then shrinks a bit on himself when Akira stares at him to continue. "He also recommended a tailor, a limousine service, a smoke machine, and-" He stops when Akira puts a hand on his chest.

Thankfully, Hanamaki has enough sense to wander back to them without the guide. "So I'm guessing this location is a No?" He looks half sleazy, and half amused.

"What part of this wedding has Oikawa-senpai not touched?"

It takes a moment for Hanamaki to gather his thoughts. "Well. He hasn't photobomed your engagement pictures yet, although he mentioned getting a certificate to officiate the ceremony." He looks between Akira and Yuutarou, then nods to his phone in Akira's hands. "Oikawa’s number is #5 on my speed dial."

Oikawa shows up two days later at their apartment with Iwaizumi. "Kunimi-chan! I just landed back in Japan when I checked my voice mail! Distraught, I had Iwa-chan drive us here instead of dinner."

Yuutarou offers a meek "welcome back" while Akira says "then go to dinner."

Behind Oikawa, Iwaizumi just lifts two take out bags. "I brought enough for all of us." On cue, Yuutarou hurries into the kitchen to grab utensils while Iwaizumi follows.

"How could you cancel the venue, the caterer, and the smoke machine?" Oikawa demands while making himself comfortable on the couch.

Akira feels an approaching headache. "Because it's my wedding."

"You're so mean, Kunimi-chan!" Oikawa wails. "I used to be your favorite senpai!"

"Sure."

"Mean!" Oikawa repeats and unwraps his designer-looking scarf. "Is this because of the officiant thing? Iwa-chan says I don't look trust worthy enough for the job. Tell me the truth. Would you prefer if Watari did it? He does have a homey, depending vibe to hi-"

Akira leans against the wall and folds his arms. "It's everything. It's our wedding, Senpai, not yours. Just because you eloped doesn't mean you can take over our wedding."

While Oikawa makes tragically affronted noises, Yuutarou and Iwaizumi returns with stemming hot bowls of ramen. Yuutarou looks at bit apologetic as he sets the bowls down on their table, but Iwaizumi just seems unsurprised. "Kunimi is right."

"Iwa-chan is terrible." Oikawa throws his head back on the edge of the couch. "I want an annulment."

Yuutarou says "please don't get divorced" while Iwaizumi says "No you don't."

As if remembering that Yuutarou is the other participate in this upcoming marriage, Oikawa rounds on him instead. "Kindaichi-chan! You should really go out with a bang! Don't you want to invite all your friends and family members to celebrate your love for Kunimi-chan? Haven't you been in love since Mad Dog-chan knocked Kunimi-chan out with a spike and you cried because you thought he had died? Don't you want your wedding to reflect the expanse of your love for Kunimi-chan?!"

The pause in the room is poignant as Yuutarou gulps.

Akira admits that Oikawa has a point. Even he is a bit lost on how to respond. Meanwhile, Oikawa looks searchingly at them while Iwaizumi just looks hungry.

Eventually, Yuutarou straightens up. "You're right, but I think everyone in my life already knows how deeply I care for Akira." He flushes at his own words and plows on. "It would be nice to have a big ceremony, but I think every day is a celebration when you're with someone you love. This wedding isn't really end game, but just a stop along the way. I'd be happy with anything, but if Akira wants something small and quiet, then I want to respect his wishes and make him happy."

Everyone is silent as Yuutarou turns to Akira and smiles shyly.

"Good job," Iwaizumi says eventually. "Can we eat now?"

Oikawa just looks shocked. "Well. Okay. I'd glad you know what you want."

"I'm glad too." Yuutarou ducks down to look at his ramen. "I just want Akira to be happy. But... If he's okay with it, maybe you could still officiate for us?"

"Fine," Akira says and feels lighter than the day he'd been knocked unconscious by Kyoutani's spike and woken up in the infirmary to Yuutarou confessing his love to him. "That's fine."

In the end, they keep Oikawa's playlist and the light machine. They have an evening ceremony at a small venue, the light machine projecting an array of stars onto the ceiling as their guests mingle and dance. Their tuxes are from the rental company Ami-chan's uncle owns, so they get a huge discount and spends the left over money on extra cake. Akira's parents, having known Yuutarou's family since middle school, chats happily with their longtime friends and new in-laws.

Kageyama doesn't show up, but their entire team from Seijou does. Kyoutani even cracks a smile when Matsukawa brings up the volleyball-to-the-face story, and Akira is light and running on enough champagne to laugh along. Half way through the reception, Oikawa tries to give a speech and is stopped only when Iwaizumi pushes him off the stage. Left standing alone and under everyone's scrutiny, Iwaizumi ends up telling stories about Yuutarou and Akira instead. Oikawa, along with the audience, laughs over a shortened summary of the planning fiasco. Iwaizumi doesn't cry, but he does get a bit teary eyed when recounting how Yuutarou stood up to Oikawa.

"This is better than Kitagawa Keiko's wedding," Yuutarou decides with an arm around Akira's waist.

Akira puts a hand over Yuutarou's. Like years ago in that bright Seijou infirmary, Akira takes one look at Yuutarou's earnest face and says, "Yes."

Tags: no major tags (technically I aged up Inui a little to match Chris?)
Word Count: 1374

Chris opened his notebook and frowned. Or, rather, he opened someone’s notebook, and frowned. He flipped back to the front of it to confirm, and as he suspected the front did not have his name on it. It was the same brand and style as his notebook though; clearly he had accidentally grabbed someone else’s notebook in his haste to get to the next panel of the conference.

He was just so excited to get to the presentation on the use of regression analysis in sports data. Which… was starting in just a few minutes, according to his watch.

He considered his options. He could backtrack, and try to find the notebook’s owner, but they probably wouldn’t be in the same place. By now, they could be at any of the panels. Or, worse, they could be using this period to skip for lunch.

Chris flipped through the notebook again, under the guise of looking for a name, but… There were some really nice charts. Training schedules, data predictions based on previous performance. Chris spotted the word ‘tennis’ repeated a few times and raised an eyebrow. He’d never thought much about tennis, but clearly this person poured everything into it.

This person named… Kaidou Kaoru, he had to guess, from the name scribbled several times in the first few pages.

The presenter began to talk, and Chris hastily flipped towards the end of the notebook to a blank page. He had nothing else to write on, and, well, he got the feeling Kaidou wouldn’t mind much.

Chris walked into his next panel early, but to his surprise there was someone already there, sitting right at the front by the panelists’ table. A tall boy, about the same age as him, with spiky black hair and glasses. But more than that, Chris’s eyes were drawn to what was in his hands. A notebook that looked exactly like his.

Because it was.

The boy had his face buried in it, flipping through the pages. Chris cleared his throat. When the boy didn’t look up, Chris did it again, and held out the other notebook.

“Excuse me,” Chris said, finally gaining the other person’s attention. “I believe you must be Kaidou Kaoru.”

The boy hit him with a strange look. “No?”

Chris frowned. “Isn’t this your notebook? I assumed, since you’re holding mine...”

The boy looked down, then back up at Chris. “Oh…” He slowly closed the notebook. “You must be Chris then.”

Chris nodded as they exchanged notebooks. “Seems you have me at a disadvantage,” Chris said.

“Inui Sadaharu,” the boy said, standing up.

“Then who’s Kaidou?”

Chris thought he saw Inui redden for just a moment, before he spoke. “A teammate,” he said. “I track the data for all of my teammates.”

“And then some,” Chris said, before he could think better of the slight admission to reading Inui’s notes.

“You play baseball,” Inui said, brushing right along. “Your methods of data collection are fascinating. I’ve never given the sport much thought, though I’ve dabbled in pitching.”

“Oh, is that so? I’m—”

“A catcher,” Inui finished for him. “I never thought about how much strategy goes into that role. If I had, I might have thought twice before playing pitcher.”

“I imagine you could excel at it,” Chris says with a smirk. “I mean… from the attention to detail I saw in your notes. Though…”

Inui raised an eyebrow. “Did you find some flaw in my data?”

“Of course not,” Chris said, waving his hand. “Forget I mentioned anything.”

“No, go on,” Inui urged him.

He sighed. “What… what were those recipes?”

Inui smirked. “Did you like my latest juice concepts? I’ve been working on a few blends that I think will maximize recovery.”

“Well…” Chris waved a hand. “To be honest, I thought they were kind of overkill.”

Inui was silent for a moment. Chris couldn’t quite tell if he was glaring or not, though he felt a small urge to back away.

“What do you mean?” Inui asked calmly.

“I’m just saying,” Chris shrugged. “You’re adding all these nutrients and proteins, when really a glass of milk would do.”

Inui scoffed. “I suppose you’d add chocolate powder and call it a day.”

Chris huffed. “It’s simple and has everything you need.”

“The protein intake of chocolate milk is half that of the average protein shake,” Inui said, flipping to the correct page in his notebook. “And less than a third of what’s in Inui Juice Alpha.”

Chris rolled his eyes. “And why would you need that much? Your juice is trying to shove three meals in a glass.”

“It’s efficient,” Inui said coldly.

“For certain definitions,” Chris muttered.

“Umm, excuse me?” came a woman’s voice.

Both of their heads whipped towards the intruding voice, only to find that multiple people were sitting in the room, with a few more filling in to sit down.

“Could you back up and do a breakdown on the product you’re talking about?” the person who spoke up asked. She were holding a pen and an open notebook.

“What?” Chris and Inui asked in unison.

“This is the lecture on effective recovery drinks, right?” the woman asked. “I think you started the presentation a bit early, but it sounds fascinating.”

Chris looked from her, then to Inui, and back. Inui seemed to be equally confused. But well… They looked behind them towards the empty panelist table, and, more importantly, the empty whiteboard behind it. In unison, they both seemed to make the decision to cross around the table, and each of them dived for a dry erase marker.

“Chocolate milk has approximately 10 grams of protein per 8 ounce serving,” Chris said, writing down the figure and beginning the lines for a chart.

Inui seemed to pick up from him exactly, completing the chart over on his side of the board. “Correct, but most whey protein powders boast up to 24 grams per serving,” Inui said, adding in that data.

“But—”

“But that figure can vary wildly, as my own lab tests have shown,” Inui said, cutting Chris off. “However, Inui Juice Alpha boasts up to 33 grams…”

“How can it contain so much extra?” the woman taking notes asked. “Is it using something other than whey protein?”

Chris rolled his eyes. “He’s using—”

Inui shushed Chris, before turning a cold stare at the woman. “The recipe is proprietary,” he told her.

Chris shook his head. “No one else would even want to use—”

“Shh!” Inui frowned. “But that’s only protein. There are a lot more components.”

Chris started adding more lines to their chart. “Correct. So, moving on to other reasons you’re wrong…”

When Chris looked over, Inui was just barely smirking. “We’re going to need more lines on this chart. Maybe some graphs.”

“Different colors for each comparator?”

Inui grabbed more dry erase markers. “I’ll start making a legend.”

Thirty minutes later the lecture hall had basically cleared out as every blank surface of the whiteboard had been colored in with figures and formulas. Chris leaned back onto the table, heaving a breath as he did. The fervor with which they’d been arguing and writing, Chris felt almost like he’d just run laps.

Inui sat next to him. “You might have a point,” he said, quietly.

Chris grinned at him.

“Perhaps you’d like to help me design something better.”

Chris raised an eyebrow. “Really? That’s not quite my strong point.”

Inui shuffled slightly. “Well…”

Chris smirked, and pushed forward with a hunch. “Or, maybe I could catch your pitch instead.”

It was Inui’s turn to look surprised. “What?”

“I have an extra glove in my hotel room,” Chris offered. “And I think I saw a field not too far away.”

Inui shrugged. “I haven’t pitched in some time…”

“You read my data,” Chris said. “Might as well see if you can do anything with it.”

Inui frowned. “Do you doubt me?”

Chris smiled. “Of course not. Though, I really only know about your data gathering skills. I haven’t gotten a chance to see you put it into practice.”

“I see,” Inui said, standing up. “Then a demonstration is in order.”

Chris smirked. “I can’t wait to see your data in action, Inui.”

/////////

Shinobu breathes. It's difficult to play karuta when her senses are overwhelmed with everything that is Chihaya, but she's a serious player, a serious girl even. Her focus isn't ever too far from her.

inhale

Chihaya wears this perfume that smells like strawberries. it's not though, strawberries, that is.

‘It's supposed to be roses, Shinobu-chan!'

Chihaya smells like strawberries to her even when the perfume that smells like roses is neglected that day.

exhale

It's a miserably warm June day and Shinobu's apartment is hardly a few degrees cooler than outside; the windows are pulled wide open, the curtains swaying feebly with a weak breeze. It drifts loftily throughout the living room and catches Chihaya's bangs. The strands that aren't sticking to her flutter above her forehead. A thin layer of sweat rests below her hairline.

Shinobu licks her lips and waits.

Just because she said, "In a moment I will come,"

Excitement sits just underneath shinobu's skin, fizzing like soda pop. Chihaya concentrates harder, her eyes sparkling bright, like gold and red fireworks on a crowded festival night.

inhale. shinobu's hands are heavy against the woven mat, the reeds leaving indents in her palms.

I've awaited her E'en until the moon of dawn
In the long month, hath appeared.

It's frightening how over the years Chihaya has perfected her swipe - her speed is rivaled only by Shinobu herself. Arata is fast, but there is more to his technique than being swift. She's watched Arata lose a card here and there to a style Chihaya can hardly explain.

Shinobu might have lost the card had it been on Chihaya's side.

Chihaya is running, bounding forward, wooden sandals clapping at the ground. She's in a bright pink yukata. Gold flowers splash across her chest and shoulder, the tips of the petals soaked in purple. A gift from Oe, to be certain. Someone painted her lips red - they stand out in stark contrast to the pale of her skin. Loose curls are piled on top of her head, shiny and soft and held in place by a simple ornament. Someone went to a lot of effort and it paid off - Shinobu isn't sure she's ever seen anyone, anything, so beautiful.

'Shinobu-chan, Shinobu!'

Her voice is so, so loud. It carries with a force over the heads of at least a dozen people, some shaking their head at Chihaya's childish behavior. Shinobu smiles, something rare and small, tentatively raises a hand above her head, quietly waves until Chihaya is almost in front of her, beaming like a lighthouse. The smile sent back her way is enough to knock Shinobu off her feet, flat on her bottom, shaking a few poems loose while it's at it.

'Shinobu-chan,' she breathes, chest heaving and eyes lit. 'I'm so glad you came.'

There's an itch just below Shinobu's skin, something hot, something irritating and impossible to scratch. It's in her chest, spreads to her lungs and makes her head feel light, as if she's lacking for air.
Chihaya is so excited to see Shinobu she can't stand still; she's wringing her yukata, wringing her hands, and soon she's gonna try and pull her down.

Can't let someone's hard work go to waste.

'Chihaya.' it's hardly above a whisper - they are surrounded by people and games and food stands but Chihaya hears her, stops her fussing and stills. Her pause gives Shinobu enough courage to grab her hand, to pull on it tightly as she takes in the festival around her.

'Can you catch me some goldfish?'

Chihaya caught her 12 goldfish.

941 words

It was Takashi's day to get up early and wipe down the counters, giving his dad the chance to sleep in now that his middle school years were over -- now that school was over, for good. Now he and his father traded off days staying up until 2AM to pour drinks for the late night crowd and getting up with the sun to prep for the next day's business. He'd helped in the mornings before, to be sure, but he'd always needed to do his homework, and go to sleep early, and leave for school before his dad could get a full night's sleep. This was better. He didn't have any regrets, which was exactly the way it was supposed to be.

The sound of knuckles rapping on the door post pulled his eyes up from the rice vinegar he was seasoning. That knock was too sure of itself to be a customer wondering if they were open yet, but if it was who he thought it was, he hadn't been expecting her until just after the lunch rush! But sure enough, there was Hayakawa Ryo-chan from the oden shop down the street, smiling away with a furoshiki-wrapped box that had to be her mother's handmade dashi for their usual trade.

"Ryo-chan? You're early! I haven't packed the stuff up yet!"

"I know, Taka-san... but I've got a surprise!"

"Okay..."

And when he opened the door, he saw what she meant. The bright blue-green pleated skirt and matching blazer Ryo-chan had on were famous.

"Wait a second! Is that a Kisaragi Girls' High School uniform? That big elite high school?!"

She gave it a twirl with a smile. "Yep!"

"And here I thought you were in the no-high school club with me!" As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he wished he could take it back. "Not that it's bad you're going to high school! That's fantastic. If your Mom can afford to send you there, you should go!"

Her hands shook a little as she set the box of dashi on the counter. Taka would've poured her a cup of tea no matter what, but today he got the feeling she really needed something to settle her nerves. It wasn't just being polite. Ryo-chan had stuff on her mind.

"I got... scouted," Ryo-chan said. "There's a scholarship and everything. The school wants to start a baseball team."

"Then why the long face?" he asked, pulling a few bottles of soy sauce from under the counter. Ryo-chan's mother might make the best dashi in the district -- even his dad admitted it was better than his -- but the little oden shop didn't have space to brew their own soy sauce. "Everybody here knows you've got the best fastball any school kid's ever thrown outside of Koushien."

She sat in silence through a few sips of her tea. Finally, she said, "Taka-san, you're a tennis player. A really good one."

"Well, yeah."

"How do I talk to a tennis player? There's this girl..." she said, and turned toward the wall trying not to blush. Takashi knew that look. He used to see it ten times a day, when he met the Captain's eye by accident because they were both looking at a teammate instead of paying attention to practice for just a minute. The middle school tennis circuit might as well have been a soap opera, and he hadn't exactly been immune to the attraction of a pretty face in the locker room when sweat and endorphins were flying everywhere. Ryo-chan didn't have to say it.

"You're talking about Himuro Izumi, right?"

"How did you know?!"

"You're going to Kisaragi, and asking me about tennis. You think I don't know Himuro-san?"

Ryo-chan rolled her eyes. "Okay, that's fair."

"Anyway, it's not like tennis players have some secret code we talk in." He set the bottles of soy sauce on the furoshiki and tied them up with a sigh. "But you know... you're used to playing with a team, thinking about when you have to step up and when you have to step back. And Himuro-san isn't a doubles player. With her, it's gonna be head on. A tennis player learns to dive for every shot. Even when your team backs you up, you're the one who's got to hit the ball."

"Hmm," she answered, in that tone that meant, "I guess you're right."

"Anyway, just go after her head-on, and you'll do fine." Takashi watched her finish her tea with a smile. "And remember kiddo... Tennis is like life! Everything starts with love."

She bopped him over the head for that, which he pretty much deserved. "You're not allowed to call me 'kiddo'! We're the same age!"

"Yeah, but I'm an old working man, and you're still in school! When're you gonna grow up?!"

Sticking out her tongue, she grabbed the package of soy sauce and headed for the door. "Well, I'm not going to let some old man make me late for morning practice! Thanks for the soy sauce, Taka-san! See you around!"

"Stay out of trouble, Ryo-chan!"

"You know I won't! But promise you'll come watch if we make it to Koushien!"

He waved her off as he poured out dry rice to wash for the first pot of the day. "Wouldn't miss it! Go get 'er, kiddo!" She didn't even turn around to notice his mistake, long gone and on her way back home, but he corrected himself anyway. "It. Go get it." But who was he kidding? He hoped she got the championship and the girl.

alcohol, drunk silliness
word count: 467

No one is sure exactly where the alcohol at the team's Christmas party came from (surely someone will blame Yuu, but Mihashi gets the feeling it wasn't him up to pranks this time), but it was there, and if it's there, it means having to try it. Sometimes you just need to know.

Mihashi decides quickly that the taste is awful, but the warm tingle through his muscles is kind of nice, if not a little strange. He wiggles in place, feeling a bit like jello as he watches Mizutani and Hama-chan try to drag Izumi into a round of karaoke. There's the telltale red spread across their cheeks too, and Mihashi is glad he's taken his spot up against the wall. He doesn't want to be pulled into that mess, if he can avoid it. Loose muscles don't just mean his arms and legs.

When he leans over, his head finds Abe's shoulder. Abe hasn't left his side all night, something about "there's no way I'm letting our ace get drunk and lose his abilities or get hurt because you dumbasses." Not that it mattered in the end, when both of them had drinks shoved into their hands and Abe ended up following suit after watching Mihashi throw his back. The thought of it makes Mihashi smile to himself.

Or not. "You okay Ren?"

Ren. It still makes his heart skip an unhealthy beat to hear his name on Abe's lips. "More than, okay."

"Yeah? You sure you don't want water, you should stay hydrated, or you'll get sick."

Mihashi shakes his head, shifting so he can keep his cheek on Abe's shoulder and look up at him at the same time. When he squints, he can see the red in his cheeks too, hidden behind his baseball tan. "You're the best, A...

...Takaya."

There's a pause, and then, "C-Come on, let me get you water." Takaya is trying to move, but Mihashi makes himself a rock, keeping him in place with his head and the hand that sneaks to his side to grip his shirt.

"I mean it." Mihashi says softly, eyes drifting shut as he thinks of the hundreds of times Takaya's been there for him, doing things no one else would think to do, even if he did get mad or upset or confusing from time to time. "I really, really do."

"Seriously, Ren, you're drunk."

"'nd you're so warm." Mihashi hums, nuzzling closer into the curve of Takaya's shoulder, "I like it."

"Ren--"

"I like you."

Takaya freezes, for a few seconds, for a minute, he can't remember, but when he looks down, tries to say something, Mihashi is already asleep, slack and soft and perfect.

"Will all participants in the summer Interhigh Intersport Festival please make their way to their appropriate divisions for the beginning of the preliminary events. I repeat, will all participants please make their way to their division for the start of the preliminary rounds."

The voice boomed over the loudspeakers around the large sports complex. Heath looked up at his team and took another headcount. One, two three, four, and… He frowned; there had been five when he counted only a few minutes earlier. Nana, Kyousuke, and Dan-sensei were picking up their team's registration, but the rest of the team had been accounted for. He did a quick scan of the tents set up around the track, but he didn't see their missing teammate.

"Riku," he said, "have you seen Takeru?"

Riku looked up. "Of course I have," he said, pointing to the corner of the tent. "He's right—" Riku stopped abruptly. There was a neat pyramid of protein drinks in the corner, but Takeru was nowhere to be found. "He was right there," Riku said defensively.

"It's fine," Heath reassured him, "just help me find him before we're late. Hozumi, Ayumu, you too."

"Will do, Heath-kun!" Hozumi said as he and Ayumu joined in the search. They found the rest of their team coming back from the registration tent, but no Takeru.

Just as Heath was about to start worrying in earnest, Hozumi yelled, "wait! I think I see him! Over by the track." The entire team followed Hozumi's finger, and sure enough, they all saw the back of a familiar black-haired teammate's head in the group gathering by the starting line.

Heath chuckled. "Of course Takeru would be the one to go ahead without us," he muttered. "Oi, Takeru!" he yelled, "Wait for us!"

The rest of the team echoed his call, but Takeru didn't seem to notice them, continuing to stare at the track and...undressing? "Umm, I don't think that's Takeru," Ayumu said, voicing what the rest of the team was thinking.

"If you're looking for the pool, it's inside," Hozumi said to the person-who-wasn't-Takeru when he noticed his swimsuit.

The stranger barely spared him a glance, pointing out onto the track and saying a single word. "Water."

Everyone looked at each other in confusion, but it was Kyousuke who finally made sense of the strange situation. "You're not a track person at all, are you?" he said. "That's not water; it's just a mirage."

"Not water?" the swimmer asked, looking dejected.

Before Kyousuke could reply, he was interrupted by shouts of "Haru!" and "Haru-chan!" and the stranger looked up sharply as a group of swimmers hurried over.

"Haru, we were looking all over for you. Our race is starting soon," one of them said, taking Haru's hand and pulling him off the track.

"Haruka-senpai, you really shouldn't wander off like— Could you cut that out?" a swimmer with glasses snapped. The entire Stride team looked down at the cause of the interruption and saw a familiar sight.

"Not bad, for a swimmer" Takeru said, feeling Rei's legs. "You should run Stride."

"I used to do track," Rei said through gritted teeth.

Heath walked over and pulled Takeru off of Rei. "What did we say about not touching people like that?" Heath scolded, sounding every bit the exasperated parent. He turned to the swim team. "It looks like you found our missing teammate for us, and I think we may have found yours. Sorry for the mix-up, but we'll trade you your teammate for Takeru now, apologies for his behavior."

As Haru and Takeru returned to their respective teams, more than one person watching asked "Are you sure those two aren't related?"

In the Kingdom of Fairies, there were laws and customs about courtship, especially for the princess of fairies. She couldn't just flit around, kissing whoever she wanted. It would be unbecoming of royalty! Nico was going to be queen someday after all, and therefore she had to be gracious with her love, and share her heart only with the fairy she intended to make her consort.

Unfortunately, Nozomi had never really cared all that much about the rules.

She hummed a happy little tune to herself as she worked, carefully weaving the flower stems together. She had been making flower crowns for the princess for a little over a week now; of course, Nico didn't know it was Nozomi doing all of this. She didn't quite have the courage just yet to tell the fairy princess who her secret admirer was. But for now, this was enough. And besides, it was cute watching Nico pout and whine and complain about her suitor's mysterious gifts, and guessing who it might be. She must have listed half the fairy folk by now, but she still hadn't guessed... Nozomi giggled to herself, as she threaded a sunny camellia in with bright pink carnation.

Eventually, she promised to herself, she'd tell Nico how she felt. But for now, it was simply enough being the princess' trusted companion and friend. Besides, she was overstepping boundaries, wasn't she? Thinking royalty could ever accept her heart. It was just silly!

Nozomi sighed at her thoughts, shaking her head as if to clear her mind. Be gone, bad thoughts. She had to think positive. At the very least, it would strengthen their friendship even more! And at most, well. Nozomi's flushed bright red, right to the tips of her ears. Bad thoughts, bad thoughts, go away!

"Aha! There you are!"

The fairy startled, jolting in place at the sound of the object of her affection's voice. Oh dear. Nozomi bit her lip, staring mournfully down at her half a flower crown, before quickly tearing it in half. If Nico asked, she could say she was simply doing flower fortunes. That should explain away the mess of petals now pooled in her lap. With that, Nozomi turned to smile at her dear friend and precious princess, as the tiny fairy collapsed on the ground next to her with a heavy sigh.

"I've been looking all over for you Nozomi! Have you been here this whole time?" She asked, narrowing her eyes at her friend before glancing down at the pieces of flowers covering Nozomi's skirt. She raised an eyebrow. "And what in the world have you been doing?"

Nozomi smiled easily, though her heart was beating too fast in her chest. "Flower fortunes, of course. I thought I might be able to ease Her Majesty's worries a bit if I could predict when the next rainfall would be."

The princess stared at Nozomi for a second too long, and for a moment, Nozomi wondered if she knew But then Nico nodded, and Nozomi thanked every star in the sky for her powers of divination. "Yeah, Mama has been really busy lately. She hasn't even had time to give me any lessons." Nico let out a sigh as she flopped over on her back in the grass.

Unbeknownst to her, her friend watched her with a soft smile on her face. Nico was so hard-working; that's what Nozomi liked most about her. The rest of the kingdom had the wrong idea about Nico. All they say was a frail little girl, who was much better at looking cute than assuring the continued existence of their people. But their princess was much tougher than they thought. She was stubborn and smart, and set herself to learning everything she possibly could about every aspect of her people's life.

That was how she and Nozomi had come to meet and become friends, and eventually, how Nozomi had fallen for the fire-hearted fairy. Nozomi was so lost in thought, she didn't even realize that Nico was watching her until the princess loudly cleared her throat. While her heart flustered at being caught staring, Nozomi merely smiled and tilted her head to one side. "Something I can do for you, my princess?"

"Ugh, stop that already." Nico wrinkled her nose, before rolling over on her stomach, picking up one of the discarded flowers off the ground. "Hey, Nozomi, are you absolutely positive you can't use your magic to find who my true love is?"

Nozomi's heart stopped, before it began fluttering with hummingbird's wings against her chest. "Nicocchi, I've told you a hundred times. I can't use my magic in matters of love, you know that."

The princess let out a loud gust of air, rather than a sigh. "I know, I know." She suddenly sat up, her gaze intent on Nozomi's eyes as she peered up into the other girl's face. "Can you use your magic to find someone?"

This time, Nozomi's heart really did stop. She blinked swallowed, licked her lips, her head buzzing with a thousand thoughts as she tried to think of some way to stall for time. "Find someone? Isn't that what the royal couriers are for-"

"No! I need to find out who's giving me flower crowns!" Nico crossed her arms over her chest, her eyes never leaving Nozomi's face. Nozomi quietly panicked, though she kept up appearances with another warm smile.

"Ehh, Nicocchi, isn't it more fun keeping it a secret? Besides, what if they don't want to be found?"

"What if I want to return my feelings?"

Okay, now Nozomi's heart was definitely no longer beating. Her eyes widened as she stared at her princess, too shocked for words. All she could manage to squeak out was a simple, tiny, "What?"

"See, I've thought about it, and really, there's only one person who I want it to be." Nico twirled a strand of her hair around her finger, as all at once, she looked away from Nozomi. Nozomi was shocked to find that Nico was faintly blushing as she continued to talk, her words a little rushed as she spoke. "My heart's been telling me for a while now, but I just wouldn't listen. But I always knew."

Gently, Nico took the flower crown she had been wearing off her head, and held it out to Nozomi, her face now a cherry red. "S-So, Nozomi! Will you please accept this token of my heart from me?"

Stunned speechless, Nozomi glanced down at the flower crown Nico was offering her. Now that she looked closely, she could see that it was clumsily made. But a lot of attention had been put into making it; she saw peonies and poppies and roses, all the colors for love and affection being held out to her by the one she loved the most.

Nozomi glanced back up at Nico's too red face with bright eyes, as she gently took the flower crown out of her princess' hands and placed it gingerly on her head. And then without warning, she flung herself at Nico, laughing as the princess squeaked in indignation, hugging the other fairy as she nuzzled their noses together.

Who would have thought that the princess didn't really care all that much about the rules either?

“...” Takeru’s eyes stare flatly at the uniform in front of him, made of white and black. He looks back up to Reiji’s gentle smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

“It’s only for one day, Takeru-kun. You just have to practice with us and come to a fan meeting,” Reiji says softly, hands laced behind his back. And sensing his hesitation, he says - “If anything, it’ll help with your endurance. Being an idol isn’t a walk in the park.”

As if determined to prove him wrong, Takeru snatches the uniform and storms into the nearest changing room. Reiji lets out a quiet laugh, sliding a schedule down onto the table with ‘Fujiwara Takeru’ written on it in neat handwriting.

He slips into his own changing room, the door made of a dark oak with his name on a gold plate. He thinks of how they got to this position - of how he offered to help their captain’s sister by modelling for them if Takeru agreed to be a part of Galaxy Standard for one day. Something akin to mutual interests, of course - they both needed to get money from their sponsors somehow.

Inevitably - he did end up getting his own set of runruly clothes, but he’d much rather wear the Saisei uniforms. The new clothes are nice, and they fit him very well, but it’s something about using clothes made by his rivals that … feels odd. Even if they were on good terms - they’re still rivals, and in Reiji’s last year, Saisei will do all they can to win.

But first - it’s time to train Takeru to be a real idol. The younger lets out a disgruntled huff, and Reiji laughs at that. Certainly, there is a relationship between the two of them, but there is also a fierce determination, one that he hasn’t felt in a long time. Fujiwara-kun is his rival, his most outstanding one, and there is nothing more he wants than to have a good race with Honan.

He slides on his shirt, and pulls open the door to the main room. Takeru’s eyes are roaming the paper, reading through the schedule, with all of Shizuma’s careful notes. Reiji knows already what they say - they’re notations on the events and circumstances, and what Takeru can expect from them. Shizuma is good at understanding people like that - a prime reason why Reiji really prefers him as their relationer.

Reiji draws closer, and he sees Takeru’s face in a state of pure concentration, and he lets a gentle smile rise on his face.

“It may seem like a lot, but it’s really not much. Usually, there are more fan meetings per day,” he says, moving to stand next to the table. “We should meet the others before they start to gossip. When Asuma gets started, there’s no stopping him.”

Reiji’s smile grows a fraction of an centimeter at Takeru’s determined nod, and he nods back before turning around and exiting the room. He trusts that Takeru will follow.
