Bonus Round 6: Remixes

The goal is in sight, participants! Let's finish strong by drawing upon the thousands of fanworks you've created this summer and putting them in new lights.

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES

Choose a fanwork created by other participants in a previous main or bonus round of SASO 2017 and create a new piece based on it. You could create a fanart of another work, an FST inspired by a piece’s style, a podfic of someone else's work, retell another person’s fanfic from another point of view, create a new fanfic inspired by a great piece of art... go wild! Sequels do count as remixes, with limits: "And then the same thing happened again" is not ok, but "And then some totally new thing happened" is fine, and please don't create only sequels.
You cannot remix your teammates' works. You cannot remix your own works. You can remix fills that were created to your own prompts.
You can remix a remix, but if we see any remix chains we'll be upset, so do this with moderation and restraint.
You must have permission from the original creator. There's a blanket permissions post here (feel free to add yourself to it!), or you can leave a comment on their original post asking for permission.
You must include the dreamwidth link to the original work in your post.
Since all fills are based on previous works, there will be no prompts for this round. Simply post your fill as a comment in response to this post.

One of my favorite things about Haikyuu!! is how Haruichi Furudate very carefully chose his character’s names, and how the manga and the anime capitalize on their name meanings. No name meaning is more explicitly stated and supported by the text than Hinata Shouyou’s name. In his kanji characters, Hinata bears the character for sun, and the anime took its cues from Furudate’s beautiful manga, snatched that metaphor and ran with it.

Our first exposure to Hinata is in a gym, with blinding light blocking him from his goals. Later, there is a shot of Hinata jumping into the beautiful light streaming through the Karasuno gym windows in the first season. In the second season, Yachi’s in on the metaphor, and designs the team a promotional poster featuring our beautiful genki protagonist jumping into the light to ask the town for donations. Third season opens with Hinata’s tall, tall wall meditation, as his eyes are closed, and he stands in the gym, basking in the dawning heat of a new day’s light and a new challenge for him to face.

And this alone would be enough! But what gets my kagehina shipper blood moving is how the anime has very deliberately and purposefully made sure we all knew that for every single shot that Hinata is bathed in the glorious sunlit promise of a new opportunity, he is either with or there because of Kageyama.

Every shot of Hinata jumping into sunlight? That toss came from Kageyama.

Yachi’s famous Little Giant Reborn poster? That toss came from Kageyama.

Hinata outside the gym taking a drink of water in the sun? Right next to him is Kageyama.

In the beginning of the third season, Hinata is by himself in the gym for just about 20 seconds so he could safely monologue, and then, who do we see show up at the door to call him back to the team, back to his flock of crows, back to the seat where he belongs on the van right next to his setter? Kageyama.

Hinata carries the character for a sunny place, and fandom has extrapolated many things about the rest of our characters: Tsukishima names himself Hinata’s moon; Yamaguchi’s speckled skin now sparkles as stars. But what is Kageyama?

Kageyama shares his mountain character with Yamaguchi. It would be fitting to name Kageyama a mountain, too: steady, difficult to change, challenging. And in order to jump, Hinata has to push off from the ground. Kageyama is at least a reliable base on which Hinata could feel safe to return to earth.

But Kageyama’s job is to keep Hinata jumping. Kageyama is there to keep Hinata in the air. His crow wings can only fly with something to support him. Kageyama, who adores Hinata, who brings the sunlight to him, who tosses to him, unfurls his wings and makes him invincible — Kageyama is no mountain. Kageyama is the sky.

bokuto's done some pretty wild things in his young life, driven by his natural sense of adventure and the wide open sea before him.

still though, none of that beats akaashi. not even close.

he actually wanted to stay longer, to talk to akaashi about his tentacles, his beautiful face, maybe about what it's like being an all-mighty sea being. or maybe just for them to fuck again - that would be the best bokuto thinks, his heart going all warm and wibbley asy whay akaashi can do, how easily he takes him apart bit by bit before gently putting him all back together again.

but akaashi had sent him back home to his family, to make sure they all knew the new and updated rules of engagement where in bokuto would serve him in... well, ways that didn't involve him getting eaten. bokuto can and does accept that.

through the whole walk home on the beach he feels lighter than air, grinning from ear to ear. the sand is cool under his toes, the sun just about to rise over the sea. it isn't a long journey back to his hometown but no one seems to be awake judging by the darkened homes.

everyone, except one lanky figure sitting by his lonesome staring off into the sea.

"kuroo! dude!" bokuto waves, walking forward. kuroo looks at him dazed, looks away, and then double takes with more vigor than he's ever seen from kuroo in his life.

"bokuto?? wait, no that can't be, who, what..."

as bokuto steps closer he sees how red kuroo's eyes are, made worse by the dark circles under them. it occurs to him all at once why akaashi was so insistent on sending him home now - everyone thought he was dead. bokuto softens, coming in to wrap his arms around kuroo.

"it's me, i swear." and kuroo slumps, holding him so tight it's hard to breath. "it's uh... well actually it's not a long story at all! basically we boned down and then he let me go! he even said i could go back if i wanted."

kuroo freezes, and then steps back.

"what."

"yeah, it was wild, i even got these cool... hickies? suckies? cause they're from his suckers, check it out!" bokuto flexes, but kuroo only looks more perplexed.

"what."

"oh and if you want, you should totally join next time! you can meet hin, get to know him, get your freak on with us..."

"WHAT."

THIS IS SO CUTE I LOVE IT!!! Lol I love how well Kuroo knows them and that he's a shameless promoter of the chaos, and that even though he totally asked for Bokuto to do the thing while Kuroo's in public, it still does him in just a LITTLE more than is ok for public transportation.

i thought about doing the "southern ancelstierre" version since ps said she wanted to see it but then i figured that might not count as a remix so much... i also didn't end up getting to touching on the mogget & kuramochi relationship too much but!!!!! i tried. i also got a bit confused about what ancelstierran technology would be at this point in the timeline but THIS IS FINE, it's an au, we can do what we want.

the abhorsen arrives at the perimeter just as the mist starts rising, flanked on either side by deceptive beasts. on one side, there's a white cat, green eyes glinting in the gloom. on the other, a great black dog, sharp muzzled and amber eyed, hair standing up every which way, half disappearing in the the dusk. colonel yuki tetsuya doesn't blink because he's been on the perimeter more than long enough not to. he recognizes the bright shade of the abhorsen's hair, the mahogany bell handles hanging down from the bandolier across his chest and, more than anything else, he recognizes the purposeful stride of someone who knows what they're doing.

"colonel," the abhorsen says, once he's in range, inclining his head.

"abhorsen," tetsuya replies. he doesn't salute but the urge to do it is there.

"i still don't know what you expect me to do here," the cat says, and tetsuya does start at that but the abhorsen waves it aside.

"sorry about the delay," he says. "we ran into a bit of trouble."

tetsuya shakes his head. "no, thank you for coming." there's a chill creeping into the air, something sinister and dark. the abhorsen is looking around with a critical eye, examining the ancelstierran machinery in varioius stages of failure. army command keeps insisting that it must be poor maintenance and tetsuya's given up getting them to understand otherwise.

"i see," the abhorsen says, head tilted, clearly listening to something tetsuya can't hear. "i see we've got work to do. kuramochi?"

the black dog wags its tail before sitting back on its haunches and throwing its head back, letting out a long, low bay that tetsuya feels all the way down to his bones, locking his joints in place for a moment before the sound seems to push past him.

"that should hold for a bit. colonel, tell me, are your charter mages ready?" the abhorsen is looking at tetsuya expectantly and tetsuya nods, clearing his throat.

"yes," he says, turning to gesture at the group of their best charter mages, ragtag as the are.

"wonderful," the abhorsen says. "please have them go with kuramochi and mogget—" here the cat hisses, sullen, and the dog bares its teeth seeming almost to smile— "kuramochi will instruct them."

"i'd still rather go with you," the dog says, its voice somehow familiar to tetsuya's ears, at the same time the cat starts yowling about how ryousuke owes him fish dinner for a year.

"yes, yes," the abhorsen says waving them both off. "let's get started, please. we have a lot of work to do."

Shindou raises his head. “Is there any of the strawberry bread left?” he mumbles, then puts his head back down and seems to fall asleep. Touya toys with the idea of cramming some into his mouth because that would be funny, but Shindou’s pretty drunk and it would be just like him to inhale some, then choke and die.

Instead, Touya snaps a picture and finishes his beer. He texts his father with the attachment and tells him that the Net-Go player Sai will probably like this one, even though he won’t. Sai had promised to keep his distance back when Shindou was still in middle school, and he’s kept that promise, but that doesn’t mean he’s kept out of Shindou’s life. And he only likes to see when Shindou is happy and thriving. Which he is, thanks to Touya, but that doesn’t mean he wants even more evidence of all of the times Shindou passes out drunk on their table. But it’s not Touya’s fault that Shindou can’t hold his alcohol, it’s only Touya’s fault that they drink as much as they do.

Touya looks through the display on his camera, seeing what pictures can go into the keep pile tonight. There’s Shindou laughing over a huge bowl of ramen, Shindou teasing Waya before he heads back to the home office, Shindou with his tongue poking out over the goban when they go into endgame (Touya won).

Then Touya packs away Shindou’s extra food, helps him to his feet, and gets him home. When Shindou wakes up in the morning, tucked into bed and wearing his blue-striped pajamas, he’ll take the aspirin and drink the water Touya left him and won’t even think about it. They’ve been doing this for fifteen years, after all, and Touya’s been watching Shindou for far longer. But the two of them, they’re okay. They’ll always be okay as long as Shindou never guesses Touya’s secret, never knows that Touya knows everything about Sai. Still knows about Sai.

Just before Touya leaves, Shindou rouses a little. He shoots Touya a crooked smile and a sleepy blink, and mumbles, “You’re my best friend.” Then he struggles to his elbows and kisses Touya on the mouth. Touya tries to pull away, he really does – he always does – but he’s helpless against Shindou’s stupid drunk smile and this time he even uses his tongue. “I love you, Touya,” Shindou says before he flops back onto his bed and passes out for the night. He won’t remember any of this in the morning.

“Stupid Shindou,” Touya says, staring down. He takes another picture. This one’s for him. “Hikaru.”

Iwaizumi isn't an irrational guy.

He's most known for being the opposite, in fact. For being steady and unwavering, the pillar of an earthquake-proof building, the foundation of a centuries-old fortress, the anchor of an unsinkable ship. Just his presence promises security, his voice and demeanor rough but comforting, in its own way, another promise that he's arrived to fix something out of place. While certain people have their head in the clouds and tend to look too far ahead, into some distant future his eyes can't see, Iwaizumi has his sights set on the immediate problem, the obstacle that has to be moved before laying siege to a dragon's castle.

Iwaizumi isn't an irrational guy, that much is true; but he does have his weaknesses, and one of them, the biggest one, happens to have a name.

Oikawa Tooru lies prone on a hospital bed, the vital signs monitor beside him boasting a flat line, more ominous and final than it's ever been in the movies. Iwaizumi had been asleep on the only chair in the room, arms crossed and head bowed, when the sound stirred him slightly, and dread completed the job of waking him up.

On the surface, it seems like nothing has changed. Oikawa hasn't moved from when Iwaizumi had seen him last, no more than half an hour ago, lashes set upon his cheek in silent repose, but the machine wouldn't be lying. The person in front of him is no longer Oikawa, or a person in any way—just an empty shell, one that used to be his best friend. No one can change that anymore.

No one, except, maybe, for Iwaizumi himself.

He hasn't told a soul about this, not even Oikawa, but he never imagined he would ever need to. It's something he's never used ever since he realized the full extent of the ability, but. This is Oikawa.

If Iwaizumi is the immovable object, then Oikawa is the unstoppable force, the only person capable of stripping Iwaizumi of his rationality.

Before he can really think about it, he reaches out, pushing a lock of Oikawa's from where it's curled on his forehead. With that simple contact, Oikawa opens his eyes.

The countdown begins.

"Iwa-chan." Oikawa is blinking himself awake (blinking himself back to life), and his voice soft and cracked from disuse but his smile is as infuriating as ever. "Are you an angel?"

Red blooms in Iwaizumi's cheeks from anger, from embarrassment, from the knowledge that he's done something forbidden. "You're not dead, Shittykawa."

Not if I have anything to say about it, he doesn't add, but he thinks it as he looks at Oikawa, heart-stoppingly alive, all the consequences (of someone else dying in Oikawa's place, of never touching Oikawa again) be damned.
