SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

PLAY BALL! For this round, we'd like you to take inspiration from songs, sayings, poems, and other kinds of famous words.

Because this is our first full round, please read this post carefully before proceeding!

This round ends at 7PM on June 13 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES

• Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
  • Example: "Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!" -Kermit the Frog
  • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
  • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Yachi & Kiyoko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Yachi/Kiyoko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
• Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.

SCORING

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

2 AM again.

Rin turned his eyes away from the clock and back to the ceiling. The euphoria of victory he expected faded out hours ago-- faded out, more like he felt dropped into ice-cold water with the sudden shock. Now the familiar confusing thoughts kept him from falling asleep. And he was so looking forward to having a different reason to stay up late. Rin's victories feel so few and far between, he wanted to savor it a little longer.

He found his mind restless again. Trying to block it out worked as well as it had been for years. When was the last time he slept well? Always the same questions gnawing on his mind the moment he laid his head on the pillow. But today these thoughts only grew louder and more insistent.

Again, his goals never turned out the way he planned. Years passed, bitterness grew, and now Rin didn't see Haru as the boy he swam the relay with. The image faded into this phantom that always stood ahead of him. The phantom that he finally caught up to and overtook.

"I'll never swim with you again."

But then why did he feel...

He thought that things would go right for him now. The first time he managed to really feel like he achieved something in years. He thought this would be the sign that he's on the right path, and all the humiliation wasn't for nothing. Rin defeated his greatest rival, he thought. But he doesn't feel like he's won.

When did it become so warm in this room? He had to get out of here.

Good thing Nitori fell asleep a long time ago. Rin already saw his head resting against the window of the bus earlier, exhausted from the day's races. Careful to make no sound, Rin slipped on his running shoes and headed out the door.

Until he felt the outside air, Rin didn't realize how hot his face had become. The slight breeze caused by running helped a little, but the summer night air in his lungs hurt with its warmth.

Why did Makoto remind him of the past? Or better yet, why did Rin feel something - like some line of defense - shattered, by a few words? Words that couldn't be true. Haru was the same as he ever was, Rin could see that much. That unshakable gaze and that "free" nonsense he always spouted-- no, he hadn't changed at all. Why would he think that one swimming event could be enough to really change anything? Rin needed to put childish thoughts away, any ideas about Haru thinking fondly of that time.

But it still invaded his mind.

An image of the Iwatobi swim club relay passed through his mind. All the sounds of the audience a dull ringing in his ear, Rin seconds away from completing his leg. The butterfly stroke burned in his arms, but Rin didn't lose his concentration, only watching his goal. As he stretched his arm forward to touch the goal, by instinct he looked up to watch Haru dive in. He shouldn't have. Because in that moment, Haru stole his heart. And after even defeating him in a race, Rin couldn't win it back from him.

Rin hurried his pace, forcing himself to focus on where he's going. In his thoughts, he ran farther from the academy into areas he didn't recognize. He only signed up for the hundred meter free, so he could afford to run until he's exhausted. And he would remember the way back.

When he returned to his room, hoping Nitori was still in deep sleep, Rin didn't look at the clock.

The second day of prefecturals, Rin joined the team even without any event left for him to do. He only came on captain's orders. Iwatobi didn't have any other events today either, he remembered.

"Rin-senpai, are you going with the team?"

Nitori and some other teammates Rin didn't know all looked at him.

"I'll catch up later."

Rin turned to the window by his seat before he could see the faces they made in response. He needed some time to think.

Manga spoilers (Makishima's post-grad plans), 885 words

Toudou Jinpachi stands outside Makishima Yuusuke’s house and doesn’t go inside.

He’d been standing out there for at least thirty minutes, he wagers, and Makishima doesn’t even know he’s here. It was a stupid gamble, a ridiculous stunt that he knew wouldn’t have worked out anyway. He thinks about turning around and going home.

Fifteen hours ago, Makishima had decided to end their relationship.

“I’m going to England, Toudou, it’s probably for the best.” He said, over a video chat that night. “I’m sorry, I just think it’d be easier for us. For you.”

“I don’t want what’s for the best,” Toudou had replied, through text, so Makishima wouldn’t hear his voice crack. “I want you, Maki-chan.”

“I know.”

“So then, why…?”

Makishima never replied, and Toudou didn’t try to keep him. He went to bed that night but never slept. Perhaps it was the rush of adrenaline he got from the unbidden emotions clawing at his chest that got him out of bed and on his bike, and perhaps it was just a lapse of judgement that led him to believe it was a proper idea in the first place, but now, here he was, standing outside Makishima’s house like a fool, because he couldn’t stand the thought of ending it all over a computer screen. A part of him thinks that maybe, Makishima was right, maybe it was for the best, and maybe they should end it to make things easier on themselves. But they had been doing so well with distance so far, what was a few more added miles to them?

A few more thousands of miles, he adds, as an afterthought to keep himself at bay, And a body of water, and—

“Toudou…?” The familiar ring of his name in Makishima’s voice brings him right out of his thoughts; he spins around, faster than he anticipateds, and for a split second he is dizzy. Makishima stands by the gate of his house wearing the same clothes he had on during their last video call (was he not able to sleep as well?)

“H-hey, Maki-chan,” He swallows, feeling like a small child caught doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing. He feels a dry knot where his throat is supposed to be.

“I thought I saw you from my window.” Makishima continues when Toudou fails to provide an explanation. “I thought I was seeing things, so I had to… go out and check.” Toudou keeps quiet, perhaps ashamed of his actions, and grips the seat of his bike harder in an effort to calm his nerves. Makishima notices.

“Did you… You didn’t bike all the way over here, did you?”

Toudou sighs nervously and finds his voice somewhere where he thought he’d swallowed it in the pit of his stomach, “It was stupid, I know—"

“You biked all the way here?! It’s about a three hour train ride and you biked? Are you an idiot--"

“Yes!” Toudou yells, louder than he intended to, but he can’t stop himself once the words escape through his lips. “Yes I am an idiot! I couldn’t stand the last talk we had, I couldn’t say goodbye without seeing you one last time. I’m sorry, Maki-chan, I know I shouldn’t have done this.”

“Toudou…”

“No, it’s fine! I was just leaving anyway, I shouldn’t have—like, this is so creepy isn’t it? Showing up like this, I mean I--" Toudou pauses without finishing his sentence; he can feel the hot sting of tears welling up in his eyes, and he stops. He doesn’t want this to be the last image Makishima has of him. Not like this. He turns away. “Sorry, I just really…” …love you.

“Toudou, stop.” Makishima says, loud enough that his volume surprises them both, and then his voice quiets. “I’m… glad you’re here.”

Toudou doesn’t reply at first, running Makishima’s words through his mind in an effort to make sure he heard them correctly. “You are?” He says, finally, letting go of the hard grip on his bike seat. “You aren’t going to tell me how much of an idiot I am and that I shouldn’t have done this, and--"

“No,” Makishima interrupts him again, “No I am going to tell you how much of an idiot you are. But...” He trails off for a moment, looking away in an effort to find the right words. “I was hoping we could talk about this again. About us.” Toudou lets out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding.

“About… ending our relationship.” Toudou says, firmly, with more control over his voice than he’d had since he caught his breath biking here.

“I want this to work out,” Makishima steps towards Toudou and extends his hand. “I’m just… afraid, maybe? Of what the distance will do to us?” He tries to keep eye contact, tries desperately to gaze back at the man before him, but finds it’s too difficult right now. Toudou knows, he feels it too, but gently takes his hand anyway.

“So let’s talk about it.” Toudou breathes, steadying his voice. “And if it doesn’t work out, at least we tried.”

“Yeah.” Makishima runs his thumb over the back of Toudou’s hand affectionately, and leads him over to the door. I love you, too.

He steps inside.
