Bonus Round 1: Quotes

Bonus Round 1: Quotes

SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

PLAY BALL! For this round, we'd like you to take inspiration from songs, sayings, poems, and other kinds of famous words.

Because this is our first full round, please read this post carefully before proceeding!

This round ends at 7PM on June 13 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!" -Kermit the Frog
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Yachi & Kiyoko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Yachi/Kiyoko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • You cannot fill your team's prompts or your own prompts.

No content warnings, side Asahi/Daichi and Hanamaki/Matsukawa (because I'm predictable), 1220 words

There are a number of ways this could go.

One - and likely the most possible - Koushi might humiliate himself. He might utterly humiliate himself and not really know what to say after Oikawa's possible, "Sorry, do I know you?" before straightening himself up and say, "Yeah, I was the setter on the Karasuno team," and have Oikawa laugh it off and turn away and not give him a second glance. Koushi would probably be so dazed (though he'll do his best not to be) that it'll be after Oikawa's already walked off that Koushi had initially meant to flirt with him.

Two - the result of Koushi's dreams, really - Oikawa flirts back. Maybe he'll find Koushi attractive, maybe he won't recognize him and won't care and have fun. Koushi remembers the way he'd been with his fangirls back in high school. Maybe he'll treat him like that, and maybe it'll be enough for Koushi to gather up his courage and ask him out properly.

(The result of this, also, depends on whether Oikawa is a) interested in him, b) interested enough in him, c) actually single like the rumors Koushi has heard, and d) still a decisive person.)

Three - Koushi will chicken out completely and not flirt with him at all, instead walk past and maybe smile a little if he remembers to (and possibly get Oikawa's attention - then from there that could go in a number of directions, but likely just end up in) then leaving and cursing himself under his breath for being a wimp, whining to Daichi and Asahi in their Skype call later, Asahi telling him, "Next time, Suga!" and Daichi scolding, "Stop being so much like Asahi!"

Asahi will probably whine then and fold his arms and turn away. Daichi will have to kiss Asahi down the cheek and neck before Asahi finally relents, and Koushi will just be happy and slightly jealous on his end that his friends are in a happy relationship while he himself feels ridiculous pining over an old high school rival.

But he's in the cafe now, grabbing a lunch before class, when he spots Oikawa in line with two people he's seen him with before. They're talking to each other so Oikawa is just gazing at the menu, hands in his pockets, scarf draped lazily and stylishly over one shoulder. Koushi grips the handle of his messenger bag and runs through all the possibilities in his mind again.

(denial, reciprocation, reciprocation and then denial, unfamiliarity??, coward, get a grip, okay, you can do this)

Koushi takes a deep breath. There isn't anyone behind them in line and Koushi's standing near the entrance of the cafe, remembering that his feet definitely do work, and his brain isn't frozen, it's just getting the guts to tell his brain to tell his feet to move. When they do, Koushi breathes out a low sigh of relief - this is going well, he's going to try this, he's -

"Oof!"

Maybe he blinks when he shouldn't have - but the next second and Koushi's fallen to his knees on the floor, having hit against someone he hadn't seen walking into him. "Sorry," he mutters, but the person he'd run into is already picking themselves up and speeding off without turning back to him.

Koushi glares and mutters as he begins to get up; his knee feels bruised and stray pens and pencils have fallen out of his bag and onto the floor. He begins to gather them up.

"Here you are."

Koushi almost jumps at the sound of the voice. He peeks up to see Oikawa smiling down at him, one of Koushi's mechanical pencils in his hand, stretched out to him.

"Oh," Oikawa says, with some surprise in his voice. "Suga-chan."

Koushi blinks. He doesn't know if he's staring at Oikawa's face or his pencil in Oikawa's hand - it feels like each of his eyes is focused on one more the other. "Oikawa," he says, because his brain runs through the idea of exclaiming, you recognize me? and you know my name? but neither would be impressionable at all.

"Fancy seeing you here." Oikawa's voice is pleasant, and Koushi takes the pencil. Oikawa keeps his hand outstretched, though, like he's offering it to Koushi.

Koushi blinks some more and takes it.

"Er," he says, gathering himself up. Oikawa's fingers are unsurprisingly callous from all those years (and counting) of playing volleyball; but they're nice to hold and Koushi wishes he had a longer time to examine their angles without it being too weird. He can't just feel Oikawa's hands forever.

He's the one who breaks them apart as soon as he gets up.

"You too," says Koushi. "Though I've seen you around campus before, so..."

"Oh?" Oikawa's eyebrows go up. His friends are still talking in the background, but his eyes are focused on Koushi. It's a little unnerving. Koushi slides his pencils back into his bag.

"Why didn't you say hi?" Oikawa asks.

Koushi clears his throat. He racks his brain of possible responses - he'd thought all this out before - but he hadn't really figured the situation would end up like this. "I'm saying hi now," is the smoothest thing he can come up with, and he definitely blushes as soon as the words come out from his mouth.

Oikawa laughs, eyes closed, mouth wide and delightful. "True, true," he says, careening back down from his laughter and meeting Koushi's eyes again. Koushi's heart stutters and he pretends it hasn't. "Well, are you staying here for long, or do you have somewhere you need to be?"

Koushi's class starts in an hour; it takes him fifteen minutes to walk from there to here. As soon as he'd walked into the cafe, he'd planned on spending less than ten minutes to attempt to flirt with Oikawa and another thirty minutes reeling down from the high and a possible excited-panic attack from the interaction. (That had been if he talked to Oikawa at all, but Koushi had had enough faith in himself to consider the possibilities of his initiating the interaction a 70%.)

(This was a 1% situation, and Koushi doesn't know how to classify it in his brain.)

"Why are you asking?" is the safe response, and Koushi slots his fingers through the opening of his jacket to tell his heart to calm down.

"If you wouldn't mind, I could keep you company," says Oikawa, and Koushi's grip gets tighter. "These two are practically on a date, anyway," he adds, gesturing to his friends.

One of them turns to them and says, "We are not." Then his gaze flickers to Koushi and looks him up and down.

"Never mind," he says, and then brings an arm around the other friend. "Hey Mattsun, did I tell you that I love the cologne you're wearing today...?"

("I'm not wearing any cologne, weirdo.")

Oikawa rolls his eyes. Koushi finds himself chuckling, and tugs on his coat so much that his hood hits the back of his neck.

"I don't mind your company at all," he says. "Lunch with you sounds great."

Oikawa beams. Koushi's pretty sure that's color in his cheeks too, but maybe he's so high on the adrenaline that it's fogging him his vision.

"Excellent," says Oikawa.

Sugawara Koushi rested his chin on the washed wooden railing of the beach house, the gentle ocean breeze caressing his skin as he watched the waves crash against the shore. Years had passed since the first time Sawamura Daichi offered to take Suga to his uncle’s beach house by the sea, and although their first trip starting with a very lost Daichi refusing directions and Suga almost running the car into a tree the five minutes Daichi let him drive, the two continued to made the pilgrimage at least once a year because of the over-washing sense of calm that pulled both of them in.

Daichi walked out on the porch and wrapped his arms around Suga from behind, pressing his lips to Suga’s cheek tenderly before turning his head toward the water. They stayed like that for a while, watching the waves crash and fizzle and the foam bubble over the water as it rose and fell in the tides.

Daichi felt a sudden chill pulsed through Suga in his arms, causing concern to flash through his mind, “...Suga?”

“It’s nothing,” Suga turned to flash Daichi a grin, his eyes shut tight so Daichi couldn’t gaze through into the bubbling in Suga’s mind on their last night at the beach house.

It didn’t work.

“Suga, be honest with me,” Daichi frowned, What aren’t you telling me.

Suga took a deep breath to steady his thoughts, a wave of emotions in their own right, “We’ve come to this beach house many times before, we’ve had some of the best nights together under those covers and on the sand and in the water. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, I’ve slapped your fine ass and you’ve squeezed mine...“

Daichi’s cheeks flushed a little pink, embarrassed as Suga continued to ramble.

“...You’ve let me bring home ten litters of kittens and keep almost half of them with our dogs, half of which are strays-”

Daichi pressed a kiss to Suga’s forehead, stopping Suga in mid sentence, “...Daichi?”

“I wanted to wait until I pull you back into the bedroom, but, here we go I guess,” Daichi let go of Suga and walked back into the beach house for a moment, pulling a small box out from the end table that was carefully folded into a pair of tangerine socks. In a moment he returned to Suga standing at the railing but now facing him, and Daichi averted his eyes while scratching his head with his free hand, the box behind his back.

“Okay,” Daichi coughs as Suga’s expression flushed a rose hint over his skin, “I’ve been trying to hide for awhile…”

“You’re not very good at that,” Suga giggled into the back of his hand.

“Suga, please I’m trying to be romantic here.”

“Mpft, sorry, continue.”

“I was trying to find the best place and time to do this. You see, Being with you, I can be myself, that's my honest feeling,” Daichi stepped forward toward Suga, cupping his cheek.

“We know each other faster than words, shining vividly when it is time to do what we’ve needed to get done on and off the volleyball court back in high school, and in our daily lives now.”

Suga gulped as Daichi’s gaze dropped down as he spoke, pulling out the small box and resting it in Suga’s hands.

“We didn't need any promises before this,” Daichi spoke softer as Suga opened the box to find a matching set of rings, “And we won't need them after, too.”

Suga looked up into Daichi’s eyes, now noticing the forming of tears at the corners. He didn’t need to say it; he already knew the answer the moment Suga’s lips crashed against his, guiding Daichi backwards as they kissed until he was flush against the wall of the beach house.

Suga broke off long enough to set the small box on the window sill and, once it was in a safe location, Daichi pulled him back in for another deep kiss, hands resting comfortably on each cheek of Suga’s ass and squeezing. Suga’s hips grinded into Daichi’s as Suga’s hands danced over Daichi’s collarbone and traced their way slowly down his chest.

Suga nibbled lightly at Daichi’s bottom lip as he tilted his head to deepen the kiss. Their mouths were hot against each other, passionate and pushing and pulling at each other with nips and licks as their mouths opened up enough for their tongues to dance with the pulse of their bodies moving against each other, ebbing and flowing and rubbing hard.

Daichi growled low in his throat at Suga as his hands danced past the hem of his pants and went to palm his crotch. Suga took this as the opportunity to break their kiss, licking and nipping Daichi’s jaw and latching onto the side of Daichi’s neck. Daichi’s hands moved from Suga’s ass to attempt unfastening his trousers, fingers fumbling and causing Suga to laugh into the hickey that was forming on Daichi’s neck. Suga’s palm presses on Daichi’s length under the fabric and bites hard, causing Daichi’s breath to hitch and his hands froze briefly before working faster at tugging Suga’s pants off.

Suga slid his palm up and unfastened Daichi’s pants and trailed his fingers under the hem of his boxer-briefs along Daichi’s hip bones as he pulled them down, lips gliding to Daichi’s collarbone to give it some oral attention. Daichi’s length was fully erect and had left a small amount of precum on the front of his underwear that was now very close to being all the way off.

“S-suga..” Daichi grunted into his ear as one of his hands stroked over Suga’s bare cock, hot and hard in his hand as the cool ocean breeze teased the back of his hand.

Suga let out a soft moan and hummed against Daichi’s collarbone, “y-Yes?”

“Would you….” Daichi’s voice trailed off as Suga sucked one last time on his collarbone, lips coming off with a wet pop. Suga looked up at him with a devilish smile before trailing light kisses down his chest, leaving a tender kiss just under Daichi’s belly button. Daichi’s hand quickly moved to get lost in Suga’s silver locks as Suga dropped to his knees and licked around the tip of Daichi’s erection before giving it a kiss and taking him into his mouth.

Daichi moaned loudly as Suga’s tongue swirled around his tip before taking more of Daichi into his mouth, pumping back slowly, and forward steadily faster. Suga braced his hands onto Daichi’s thighs, digging his fingers into the skin as Daichi’s hand in his hair pumped his head in rhythm with Suga’s pumping and the crashing tides. Suga took all of Daichi into his mouth, his tip pressing against the back of his mouth as it had done many times before, the perks of having no gag reflex, and Suga pulled back slowly while humming around Daichi’s cock before releasing and Daichi pulling him up, lifting Suga by his legs and spinning both of them around so that Suga was pinned between him and the wall of the beach house.

Daichi kissed Suga hard before offering Suga a few fingers to cover in saliva. Suga sucked down on Daichi’s fingers, keeping his eyes locked on Daichi’s, flooded with animalistic desire and need. It took all of Daichi’s willpower to just press into Suga then and there without preparation, but Suga released his fingers and kissed him lightly, giving Daichi the go ahead to loosen him up. Daichi pressed a single finger into Suga’s ass and Suga shivered in his arms, fingers digging into Daichi’s back. Daichi moved his finger around slowly, adjusting Suga as his breath hitched and sighed, lowering his head into the crook of Daichi’s neck. Daichi pressed in a second finger, widening Suga up and Suga whimpered into Daichi’s neck.

“I-I’m r-ready,” Suga whispered into Daichi’s ear and kissed his earlobe.

Daichi pulled his fingers out and repositioned Suga higher against the wall, locking lips as Daichi pressed himself into Suga’s hole, holding Suga’s legs under his thighs. Suga gasped into Daichi’s mouth and moaned loudly in pleasure as Daichi thrusted hard into Suga, but pulled back painfully slowly. Daichi repeated this a few times, before Suga pulled at his lip with his teeth to get him to thrust faster, and Daichi responded by going only slightly faster.

“D-daichi, just fuck me, already,” Suga whined against Daichi’s lips, dragging his nails deep into Dachi’s shoulder blades. Daichi began to thrust into Suga harder and faster, pounding Suga’s body into the wall of the beach house like the merciless waves against a ship being wrecked in the midst of an ocean storm. Daichi and Suga moaned louder and louder together, hips pounding in rhythm and being both of them closer and closer to the edge. Suga’s cock came over their chests as his rectum clenched up around Daichi’s length, causing Suga to cry out as Daichi grunted and came within him. The two slid slowly to the ground, Suga’s arms wrapped around Daichi as he sat in his lap, Daichi’s cock no longer deep within his ass.

Daichi gave Suga a gentle kiss on his forehead and bumped their foreheads together after Suga pulled the small box down from the window sill. Daichi opened the box and slid one of the rings on Suga’s ring finger, and Suga returned the favor for Daichi.

The two cuddled on the porch of the beach house for a while in bliss before remembering that maybe, just maybe, being naked outside might not be the best thing for any of the neighboring beach houses to witness.

Warning for manga spoilers (related to the brothers' backstory). 1069 words

Note: I chose Kei & Akiteru. The firefly thing is a pun on the kanji in Kei's name, which means firefly.

Sometimes when Akiteru couldn't sleep, he would stay up and write letters to Kei. Though Akiteru was the one who had gone away to college, it felt to Akiteru that Kei had left him first.

If the coffee Akiteru drank to help him stay alert while studying didn't keep him up, his memories did. He would never forget the day Kei saw him on the in the stands at that Karasuno game; the game that he let Kei believe he would be a starting player in.

While he knew nothing would come of it, he found himself writing anyway.

Dear Kei,

We learned about bioluminescence in biology class today and it made me think of you--not just because of the whole "firefly" thing (haha), but because I think you'd find it really interesting. Do you know if there were ever bioluminescent dinosaurs? I know one of your old T-rex toys was glow-in-the dark--or maybe it was a triceratops? It was the one you left at the park when you were three and you cried and cried until I found it again after searching the playground for like an hour. You were so happy when I found it again!

How's volleyball going? Are you still playing middle blocker

This is where the letters usually ended; when Akiteru either put them away in a drawer of his desk or violently crumpled them up and threw them in the trash, depending on how his night was going. Tonight the letter ended up in a drawer. Akiteru thought the beginning part was salvageable if he ever stopped being such a coward and actually wrote a real, honest letter to his brother.

Tonight was a full moon. Though he had put his books away a few hours ago, Akiteru was still wide awake. The moonlight filtered through his thin dorm curtains and spilled across the thin dorm carpet. He missed home. He missed his house and his parents and, of course Kei.

He closed his eyes in an attempt to drift off to sleep. It was not the first such attempt of the night, and like the previous attempts, it led him to a convoluted twist of thoughts and memories instead of sleep. Suddenly Kei was six again and eating strawberry mochi ice with thirteen-year-old Akiteru, who had just come home from volleyball practice. Akiteru had brought the treats home as a special snack.

"This is so good, nii-chan!" Kei exclaimed between bites. His eyes were wide behind the thick frames of his glasses, which he had even at that age.

"I'm glad you like it," Akiteru said, "Just slow down before you get a brain freeze, eh?"

"My brain is fine!" Kei pouted. He rubbed his head as if to make sure. " Hey, nii-chan, will you tell me the mochi story? About rabbit-chan who makes mochi on the moon?"

"Well you basically just said it yourself," Akiteru laughed as he finished his own mochi ice. "When you look at the moon at night you can see rabbit-chan making mochi up there."

Kei's face lit up as if this was the first time he had heard the little story. "Did we just eat mochi from the moon?"

Akiteru smiled and ruffled Kei's hair. "Who's to say? Nii-chan has some homework to do, so why don't you go play with your dinosaurs now?"

Kei bounced in his seat. "Okay! Can we look at the moon tonight nii-chan? If it's big?"

Akiteru looked down at his little brother's hopeful face. It was hard not to love that kid, even if he was a pain sometimes. "Yeah, let's look at the big moon later, Kei."

Kei grabbed his sleeve. "Promise?" He extended the little finger of his right hand, and Akiteru proceeded to link his little finger with Kei's.

"Promise."

Akiteru kept that promise, but not the ones that came later, he thought. He lay on his side on the bed, staring at the moonlight. He wondered if Kei was watching the moon, too.

He stood up and opened the curtains. The view of campus outside his window was awash with moonlight. The lawns and paths and buildings which made up the university were empty. Akiteru looked and saw those familiar shapes on the face of the moon, which he and Kei were old enough to know now were just geological phenomena. He still tried to find that rabbit-shape, though.

Akiteru checked the clock on his bedside table. 2:32, it read in glaring red digits. He sighed. Not much chance of a restful night at this rate.

He thought again of his brother, probably taller and even more reticent than he was the last time Akiteru caught a glimpse of him on a visit home. He thought of him watching the moon.

He sat down at his desk again and turned the small lamp on. He slowly opened his desk drawer as if there was a poisonous animal inside and took out the half-written letter.

He kept the beginning as it was, only crossing out the line about volleyball. Instead he wrote:

Can I ask you something? Is your life better now? Are you happier now that I went away? I would understand that if it were true. I know I embarrassed you and made you feel terribly ashamed. More than anything I wish I could be the person you saw before that day, the one you looked up to. Maybe that's selfish of me. I wish you would tell me what you want. We're brothers, there's no changing that, but I hope someday we can be friends, too. I'm still trying to figure out who I am, and I know you probably are too. I remember being fifteen and it wasn't easy. I hope someday you will let me be there for you again. I will do my best not to let you down.

Your brother,
-Akiteru

Akiteru let his pen fall from his fingers and clatter on the desk. He read and re-read the letter before slipping it into an envelope, which he left on his desk unsealed and unaddressed.

He switched off the lamp and his room was covered in moonlight once again, the white envelope almost glowing in the light.

Progress, Akiteru told himself. He threw himself on the bed and shut his eyes. When he finally slept, Akiteru dreamed of moonlight and a small boy's smile.

The damn vending machine wasn't working again. Or not fast enough for Tobio's taste at least. He had been thinking about drinking strawberry milk all morning and now that he finally had time to buy it, he was impatient about getting it.

As Tobio jabbed the button several more times than was necessary, Oikawa Tooru walked up behind him.

"Heyyy Tobio-chan," Oikawa said, dripping with faux-sweetness. "How's that milk working out for you?"

Tobio jumped and almost dropped the milk, which had finally come out of the machine moments before. What was it about Oikawa-senpai that always threw him off guard? Getting a grip on the carton, he jabbed the straw violently into the hole.

"Fine. Senpai," he said stiffly. Part of him wanted Oikawa to leave, but for some reason he also really wanted to say something cool more than he ever had before. There he was, Oikawa Tooru, in the flesh, and alone. Where's Iwaizumi anyway, Tobio thought, drinking through the straw with remarkable determination. Iwaizumi Hajime would be useful in this situation because he tended to keep Oikawa in check, or at least he tried. Tobio appreciated that.

Oikawa pushed his hair down over his face and frowned. "Fine, senpai," he said in a grouchy voice. It was an imitation of him, Tobio realized. He frowned deeply. "I'm not like that, senpai."

"I'm not like that, senpai," Oikawa mimicked again. "Lighten up, Tobio-chan! Live a little! Have some juice for once, even!"

Despite his irritation, Tobio noticed Oikawa's hair. It had a niceness about it, he realized, in the way the sunlight hit it. He wondered if Oikawa noticed anything about him. He wondered why Oikawa kept calling him Tobio even though they weren't friends. There was also a silence happening, Tobio realized with alarm. A silence that would have to be broken.

Oikawa broke it first. "Well Tobio-chan," he said nonchalantly, "I've got things to do. I am sure I am needed elsewhere." He turned to walk away, and then stopped. "And before you even ask, I'm definitely NOT teaching you the jump-serve today!" He stuck his tongue out at Tobio.

Tobio, having just finished his milk, crushed the carton in his hand and said the worst thing he ever said in his life to Oikawa Tooru:

"Well, that's fine, senpai. I came here to drink milk and kick ass, and I just finished my milk."

Immediately realizing what he had done. Tobio sprinted away without turning back.

For the rest of the season, Oikawa called Tobio "milk-lover-chan," and Tobio regretted his entire existence.

Now, we walk into the salt and pepper diner one day and they had a jukebox there. And the jukebox was three plays for a dollar. So we put in seven dollars and selected twenty one plays of Tom Jones's What's New Pussycat.

And then we ordered. And waited.
