“What kind of girls do you like?” Toudou asks one day, while everyone’s at the diner. He’s got a little notebook out, and a pen, ready and poised.
“Isn’t that none of your business?” Arakita asks back. “What’s the notebook for? Are you looking for tips or something? Write down ‘be less annoying’.”
“You’re useless,” Toudou hisses, and scribbles something in his notebook. He shoves it into Arakita’s face. “Read it!”
Arakita’s gaze skims across the phrase. He makes a face. “I’m not saying that out loud. Or in my mind.”
Toudou pulls the notebook back and reads out what he wrote: “Toudou Jinpachi is a perfect ten!”
“That’s great, Jinpachi,” Shinkai says, nodding.
“Strength of character,” Fukutomi says, “is very important.”
Everyone stares at him, puzzled.
“Weren’t you asking about what everyone likes in girls?”
“Yes!” Toudou says, and he makes note of it on his page. He looks up at Fukutomi. “I would have assumed as much, though. Shinkai, have you got a more interesting answer than either of these two?”
“Hmm,” Shinkai says. “I like girls who eat carrots.”
Arakita stares and then jumps in his seat a little, looking worried. Toudou purses his lips, head tilted to the side as his hand hovers over his notebook page. Fukutomi frowns.
Shinkai smiles back at them.
“Do you mean your--” Araita starts, but Toudou interrupts him.
“He means girls who are healthy! They love vegetables. Right, Shinkai?”
“Ha ha,” Shinkai says. “Yes. That is what I meant.”
Toudou busies himself with writing in his notebook.
“You didn’t mean your rabbit?” Arakita asks, eyes narrowed.
“Carrots, Yasutomo,” he says seriously.
Fukutomi looks concerned.

Shinkai’s in the dorm kitchens, cutting up some vegetables. He’s got some broccoli, lettuce, and carrots. He washes them all thoroughly. He cuts the leaves off the broccoli, cuts the lettuce into smaller pieces, and cuts the tops off the carrots. He puts the good stuff in one box, and the rest in another box. He goes to Usakichi’s hut.
Usakichi’s been getting fat, which Shinkai finds delightful. She’s so cute, and soft, and roly-poly, but all the stuff Shinkai’s been reading on rabbit care says she should be getting more exercise. He’ll have to let her out of her hutch a bit more frequently, and look up tips online for activities. He inspects her chew toy and decides he’ll have to get a new one soon.
“Maybe I can find one that looks like a bike!” he says to her. He waits a pause, and says, “you’re right, that would be a difficult shape to chew on.”
Shinkai sits with Usakichi for a while, just petting her and talking about his day. He mentions Toudou’s strange questions at the diner, and everyone’s reactions to his answer. When she starts to get restless, he finally lets her go and reaches for the container of vegetables he’s brought.
“Here you go, Usakichi. Some broccoli leaves,” he says as he lays them out. “And some lettuce.”
Usakichi comes to inspect the food, sniffing at it. She starts nibbling on the lettuce.
“Ah!” Shinkai says. “You’re right, I forgot the best part.” He pulls out the tops of the carrots. “Some carrot tops for you!”
Shinkai lets himself lie on his side while he watches Usakichi eat. He reaches for the actual carrot bits in the other vegetable container, a bit miserable.
“I don’t like carrots enough to eat them each time I get you the tops,” Shinkai says. “And you’re not supposed to eat them at all.” He sighs. “I really wish there were someone around who eats carrots so I don’t have to. I would like them a lot.”
i looked up rabbit diets for this. b ye .

Shinkai had never befriended an animal before.
That was not quite true, he reasoned with himself, considering his own parrot, considering Yuuto's fixation on small rodents, considering Juichi's solemn birdwatching in-between riding and study sessions. Yet, he could not shake the feeling of difference about Usakichi. The warmth in his hands when he would hold her, in gentle calloused fingers, when she would scrape her nails along his belly as he laid next to her cage, when she would look up at him with an attentive twitch every day he arrived with food and a book to relax to.
Usakichi was not like a bird who had been raised to speak alongside humans, nor was she like a hamster bred for households and running wheels. He did not own her. She was not for keeping. She merely had nowhere else to go, and he had no other way to absolve himself.
He didn't have a type when it came to people - he liked a stern childhood friend - a prideful new climber - an angry former pitcher - all of whom were strange, struggled to understand Shinkai himself, but always meant well. But the more he sat at the hutch, allowed himself to touch someone warm and small without flinching for fear of what his hands might turn into at the last moment, that blood could appear and trickle out from some wound Usakichi had hidden - that the blood she would accidentally give rise to when she scrambled along his arms could poison her and make her waste away - the more he realized he did have a type. Given the proper clause to pin onto whatever rules his classmates would make up for dating games.
People sometimes asked if he took up the duty for caring for the animals the school kept out of some kind of want to impress, as though cyclists would gain accolades for a sort of display of kindness to being weaker than themselves. It was possible Usakichi was weaker than him. She was smaller, and he had learned well the fragility that came with such delicate bones and careful eyes. Yet, he could not shake the feeling that he was on her level, even as his body grew, even as he gained muscle and speed and remarkable sturdiness in form.
He was complemented, by his fellow cyclists, even by adults and scouts, but Usakichi sniffed at him as though he was the same he ever was, no matter how many centimeters he gained. If he could match his emotional state, Shinkai would sit at her level, and not feel much weaker for it. As long as she was there, it was strangely simple, no matter how many days passed.
She was as alive as he was, and the two of them would ensure one another in their quiet gaze in the mornings, after class, and in the goodbyes he could allow himself when it was time to leave Hakone.
Even in college, people would express their shock at Shinkai's lack of a dating history.
"Sorry, I'm just trying to be faithful," he would answer with a smile. "I've got a girl at home. She loves carrots."
