A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.


This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES

• Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
  • Example: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - M. Gandhi
  • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
  • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

Sousuke keeps the damn bug.

For whatever reason, when he takes the jar out to the trees near his family home, the beetle just isn't interested. It climbs out onto his arm and clings to his sleeve tightly enough to withstand Sousuke's halfhearted attempts to shake it off. It only lets go when Sousuke offers up the jar again, crawling back inside.

Sousuke frowns at it, but carries it home anyway.

He takes the beetle and the jar back to the Samezuka dorms, placing it on his desk and thinking that perhaps a beetle that big might need some more room.

Rin, who has been smirking at him ever since he took the jar out of his bag, is more than happy to accompany Sousuke to the local pet store, where he learns more about caring for beetles than he's ever picked up from the times he's half-listened to Momotarou.

He also ends up returning to their room with a big damn tank, because apparently a jar isn't enough at all, and stag beetles need proper care and this one, apparently, needs the glass tank equivalent of a fucking castle.

"I hate you," Sousuke says, to the room in general as he sets up the beetle's tank. He isn't sure if he's talking to the beetle, to himself, or to Rin, who is still wearing the same infuriating smirk.

It's all Momotarou's fault, he decides. He'll get revenge, somehow.

"Oh!" Momotarou says happily, when he sees the tank one day when he and Nitori have invited themselves over. "You kept Pyunsuke!"

"That's not his name," Sousuke grumbles.

"Oh?" Momotarou blinks at him. "What did you name him, then?"

Sousuke looks away. "Uh."

"He can't not have a name," Momotarou says incredulously. "Right, Pyunsuke?"

So Sousuke ends up keeping the damn name, too.

He gets used to the beetle, and the name, and everything. He thinks that Pyunsuke might like him, because even when he's out of his tank, he's content to stay within Sousuke's reach, wandering back and forth across his desk and sometimes flying from one side to the other, but he never goes further than that.

Sousuke doesn't really think anything of it, until Momotarou points out that Pyunsuke doesn't seem to like other people. It's true, now that Sousuke thinks about it. Whenever Rin walks over to his side of the room, Pyunsuke tends to fly at him, hitting him in the face, or the shoulder, before returning to the desk.

"You know," Momotarou hums. "I've heard that stag beetles do this thing called mate-guarding where they—"

"Momotarou," Sousuke interrupts, looking him directly in the eyes. "You might want to think about whether you really want to finish that sentence."

"You're right," Momotarou agrees. "I have somewhere to be."

"Yeah you do," Sousuke nods, opening the door for him.

Rin waits until the door is shut before he bursts out laughing.

Sousuke sighs heavily. "Shut up."

"Did he just imply that you and your beetle—"

"Shut up," Sousuke repeats, louder this time.

Rin doesn't. Not that Sousuke is actually expecting any different.

It gets worse when, a few days later, Sousuke has Pyunsuke crawling across his hand, and Rin reaches over to grab a pen. Without even thinking about it, Sousuke reaches out, meaning to brush Rin's hand away, but ends up knocking it back with more force than intended.

Rin blinks at him. "Wow."

"Sorry," Sousuke says quickly. "I didn't mean to—I don't know why I thought you were trying to pick Pyunsuke up—"

Pulling back with a grin, Rin folds his arms across his chest. "Mate-guarding, huh?"

Sousuke sighs heavily. "I hate you."

"Did you run here?" Tobio asks, standing in his doorway, looking at Tooru.

"I decided I needed a morning jog," Tooru replies, panting softly. He wipes his face with the hem of his shirt, noting the way Tobio's gaze drops to the stretch of exposed skin. "I thought I'd save time since I was coming here anyway. Don't think that I was overeager to come here to see you, or anything like that."

"I wouldn't dream of assuming anything like that," Tobio murmurs, as Tooru steps forward, placing a hand on either side of his face and pulling him into a kiss. Tobio hums, kissing back briefly before he pulls away. "Come in."

Tooru shuts the door behind him, taking his shoes off before he steps towards Tobio, kissing him again. He rests his hands on Tobio's hips, guiding him backwards through the apartment, onto the couch.

"Don't you dare think," Tooru murmurs, climbing on top of Tobio and nuzzling against his neck, "that I've been waiting for this. That I've been looking forward to it all week, counting down the days to the weekend so I could come and visit you."

"Of course not," Tobio replies, and his grip on Tooru's shoulders is tight, like he never wants to let go, like he wants to pull Tooru closer and closer.

Tooru can live without this. He can live without Tobio's gentle blue gaze, he doesn't need to pass his spare time cataloguing ever single little difference between the Tobio that he knew back in middle school and the one that he knows now, in university. He doesn't need to keep all of that information at the back of his mind, not because he's planning on using it but because he likes going over it in his idle thoughts, connecting the dots between before and now, working out not only how he's changed, but why.

It's not as if Tobio is his favourite puzzle; one that Tooru could lose himself in for hours, picking every little thing apart and still not entirely being able to work him out. It's not as if Tooru can't get enough of him. It's not as if Tooru is in love, or anything like that.

Tobio reaches up, his fingers curling in Tooru's hair, and pulls him back down into a kiss, and he can play the part of the needy one, for both of their sake. He can make it so that Tooru doesn't have to hesitate. He plays this part perfectly, and that's a new development too; the fact that he can even recognise that this is something he needs to do.

Tooru doesn't praise him for it. He just kisses Tobio again, sinking into him a little deeper. That's enough.
