The princess of the night sky holds court with the stars gleaming around her, picked out like thousands of dreams crystallised and tucked safely away where they can continue to exist without any harm falling upon them as she watches over them.

The moon is full tonight, just the same as her heart is full of love, overflowing the same as the milky way overflows with stars, spilling out across the darkness and giving it life. Her hair is the colour of the night, but her eyes are the gentle amber of the afternoon sun.

It only makes sense, after all; she's found that recently, the sun has been occupying every thought she has to spare, and then some.

Of course, she likes to be specific and she will be specific with this as well: it's the princess of the sun who has captured her thoughts, who reflects in her eyes. The princess of the night sky has been watching her, hiding herself in the daytime moon whenever she can, among the craters and the planes, hoping that she isn't caught. She knows that if she is seen, the princess of the sun won't let her get away with it, and she doesn't know if she's prepared for that.

She doesn't know if she's ready for the princess of the sun to make her own up to her own feelings. She knows that she won't shy away from it, when it's asked of her. She'll hold her head high and speak the truth, because the night may hide all kinds of things, but she doesn't lie.

The princess of the night sky also knows that her feelings are not unrequited. That's not what worries her about this. She only wishes that it were that simple.

The problem is that just as darkness learns how to find its way into every crevice unclaimed by the light, the princess of the night sky has learned to fold herself neatly and perfectly into any shape that is required or expected of her. She is origami made from moonbeams, each fold sharp, each corner perfectly pointed. This is who she is, meeting the expectations made of her, by others and by herself, and she isn't going to change, no matter which way she folds.

She's unchanging, for all that she turns with the phases of the moon, with the shift of the constellations in the sky. The sun is bright and pure and simple, and she is not. She doesn't know how they'll fit together, whether it'll work like the light of the sun reflecting against the moon, or if they'll contradict each other's very existence, like night and day.

It's half fear and half anticipation that storms inside her, even though she lets none of it show.

Instead, she hides herself in the daytime moon again, and watches the princess of the sun shine across the sky.

“There you are,” Asahi said as he finally spotted Noya in a corner. Odd. Noya was usually at the center of parties, laughing and flirting louder and harder than almost anyone. “I’ve been looking for you.” Noya grabbed his arm and pulled him close.

“Asahi, do you know that guy?” he asked urgently. Asahi looked puzzled.

“Which guy?”

“That one.” Noya pointed at a group of guys laughing in the center of the room. Asahi raised his eyebrows. “The hot one!” Asahi shrugged and Noya groaned. “The guy with the great smile who’s noogieing that redheaded first year,” he said in an aggrieved tone, as if Asahi should have known who he was talking about.

“Oh! He’s actually in a few of my classes. His name is Tanaka, I think? He seems pretty popular.” Asahi looked pleased that he actually had an answer. It wasn’t often that he knew someone Noya didn’t.

“Tanaka,” Noya breathed reverently. He turned, angling himself so he was looking at Asahi while still keeping Tanaka in his peripheral vision. “Asahi, he’s so hot. I’ve been watching him all night. He stopped some creep hitting on this first year girl and he took care of some kid who was throwing up. He’s really good at dancing.” He’d left out the part where Tanaka had also dared that same kid to chug a full cup of every liquor they could find, Asahi noticed. Not that that was likely to be a negative in Noya’s view.

“Sounds like you’re really into him,” smiled Asahi. Noya stared at him.

“I would kill a man for the chance to take a shot of his back sweat,” he said solemnly. Asahi made a face.

“Noya, that’s disgusting.”

“I know!” Noya ran his hands through his hair.

“Why don’t you go talk to him?” Asahi suggested. “Isn’t that what you usually do when you like someone? I’ve never seen you wait this long.” Noya shook his head wildly.

“Asahi, did you not hear me a few seconds ago? I can’t talk to him! His hotness is clearly making me stupid.”

“Well, can we go then?” asked Asahi. “It’s late, and if you’re not going to make a move…” Noya sighed.

“Fine. But I’m prepared now. Next time I see him, I’m going for it.”

The next time Noya saw Tanaka, Tanaka was playing volleyball with his friends on campus. Tanaka spiked the ball past the other team and whipped off his shirt, crowing with victory.

Noya did not go for it. Instead, he went back to his dorm and screamed into his pillow.

Even though he could have sworn he’d never seen Tanaka before that party, Noya now saw him everywhere. Laughing in the grass, in the halls between classes, in the library, where Noya had been forced to deal with the fact that Tanaka apparently wore reading glasses, and if he’d thought Tanaka was his type before he had now been raised to the pinnacle of hotness. Everyone Noya met would now be measured against Tanaka in reading glasses, and be found wanting.

He’d never been the kind of person to hesitate. If he saw someone he liked, he went for it, and damn the consequences. Every time he saw Tanaka, though, his brain seemed to stutter to a halt, and he really did not want to make an idiot of himself.

After a month of staring, pining, sweaty dreams, and overlong showers, Noya finally had enough. He was going to talk to Tanaka. He was going to ask him to hang out or something, and he was not going to be weird about it.
He caught sight of Tanaka after class, sitting on a bench and messing with his phone. Right. This was it. Now or never. Noya took a breath and marched up to him.

“Hi, Tanaka, right? I’m Nishinoya! Nishinoya Yuu. I’ve seen you play volleyball a couple of times, and I was wondering if I could join you? I’m pretty good.” Nice. Tanaka finished typing out a message on his phone and answered without looking up.

“Hell yeah, man. Always good to have another player.” He looked up, saw Noya, and his eyes widened. “Oh. Hey. We could…go right now? Play right now, I mean?”

“What, just the two of us?” Noya grinned. Thank goodness Tanaka wasn’t smooth on top of everything else.

“Yeah! Wait, that’s ridiculous. Forget it.”

“No.” Noya put his hand on Tanaka’s shoulder. “That sounds great.”

Something changes after Iwaizumi takes that feminism and gender roles course, and Oikawa can’t tell if this is the best or worst thing to have happened to them both. Iwaizumi has always been unapologetic and tough, but after a semester of evening lectures and study groups with that lecherous Kuroo girl, Iwaizumi now uses mind boggling phrases like “social construct” and “intersectionalism.”

The change in Iwaizumi’s vocabulary isn’t really a big deal. Oikawa has always known her girlfriend was smart, and she was happy for the world to know it too. Although she notices other intramural softball girls’ eyes glazing over when Iwaizumi talks, Oikawa doesn’t feel threatened.

This is obviously a lie. Oikawa feels extremely threatened, and Iwaizumi’s newfound love for nudity is making it worse. Iwaizumi has always walked around in sports bras at home, but now she has taken to going braless under her endless collection of sleeveless tanks and rummaging through the fridge in boxers that are too short for any man to wear. “Bras are such unnecessary contraptions, Tooru,” Iwaizumi had said when Oikawa suggested she put a bra on. “And you always tell me you love my boobs.”

Oikawa does love Iwaizumi’s boobs. If anything, Oikawa would prefer to die with her face buried in her girlfriend’s boobs. “When you walk around campus without a bra, other people stare,” Oikawa points out.

“Fuck this double standard,” Iwaizumi says while drinking directly from a carton of milk. “Men can show their tits and I can’t? Their nipples are vestigial!”

“Iwa-chan-”

“Kuroo and I are joining this year’s slutwalk. Maybe I should go completely topless and-“

“Iwa-chan,” Oikawa says, torn between laughing and crying. “What has gotten into you?! You used to throw pants at me when I wore my uniform skirt too short!”

Iwaizumi closes the refrigerator door and stares at Oikawa. Her face turns from constipated to concerned—a sequence that usually only showed up during volleyball practice, when Oikawa does something dumb. “I know,” Iwaizumi says at last. “I was a part of the problem.”

“You’re a flaming lesbian,” Oikawa says, throwing her hands into the air. “You’re not the problem!”

“But listen,” Iwaizumi continues, scratching her head. “I feel bad about all the times I policed your body. I am a flaming lesbian, or whatever you want to call it, so people don’t really mess with me. But they do mess with you, and I want to challenge the culture that teaches people they can fuck around with you.”

Now Oikawa really wants to cry. “Iwa-chan, you’re not a part of the problem,” she says again. “You’re wonderful.”

“So join me on the slutwalk.”

“Okay,” Oikawa says. “But can we both wear clothes.”

“Whatever you want,” Iwaizumi says. “You have agency of your own body.”

“I hate how sexy you sound when you spew this shit,” Oikawa says, then kisses Iwaizumi.
