Mizuki startled as the door to the supply closet he was in opened. He grabbed at a box of pens to use for an excuse as to why he was there, but only managed to fumble them in his state of panic, spilling them over the floor. He cursed, and turned to see who the intruder was.

Inui stood in the doorway, the bright florescent light of the hallway framing him, like a flickering, eye-straining halo.

Mizuki scowled. “What are you doing here?”

“I would say I’m here to restock on pens, but clearly you’ve made that a challenge.”

Mizuki frowned. He looked in the box of pens and found a singular one that hadn’t fallen out and scattered across the floor in his panic. He plucked it out of the box and threw it at Inui.

To his annoyance, Inui caught it, as if he not only predicted Mizuki’s move but also knew exactly where he would throw it.

“Fine,” Mizuki said. “You have what you came for. Now, go away.”

“What are you doing here?” Inui asked.

“Thinking.” Mizuki turned away. “I’m really not in the mood to regale you with the stories of my brilliance right now, Inui-san. Maybe you could come find me another time.”

“Brilliance? Is that so? That’s not quite the way I heard it.”

Mizuki turned on him, eyes flashing a healthy dose of rage. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I heard you blew the presentation to the newest potential funder,” Inui said. His face was solid as a rock, no hint of emotions on it. Mizuki wanted to punch him and see how hard he’d have to hit to chip away that rocky facade.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Mizuki hissed. “Beside that, you had nothing to do with that meeting. You’d have no way to know.”

“I suppose not,” Inui said. He spun the pen that he’d caught from Mizuki deftly between his fingers. Mizuki realized all at once that this might’ve been the first time he’d seen Inui without a notebook held close to his chest as he quickly transcribed everything going on around him.

And for some reason, that made something distantly click in the back of Mizuki’s mind, like a spark in a gas filled room. “What did you do?” Mizuki hissed.

Inui raised an eyebrow at that, as if Mizuki was a particularly interesting bug. “I wonder how you came to the conclusion that I could have anything to do with your failure. After all, you are quite keen on reminding me how I’m not the clever orator you are. What could I have possibly done to sabotage that?”

Mizuki stepped forward. “I don’t know how, but you did.”

Inui stood firm, not moving an inch even as Mizuki encroached on his space. “Interesting. Not only are you so desperate to find an explanation for your failings that you would blame others for it, but you’re also apparently willing to claim complete ignorance to how i could have been done. Either way, you seem to be quite willing to show off your failings.”

Mizuki grabbed Inui’s tie and tugged. He was rewarded with a sharp noise of a breath being wrenched from Inui’s windpipe, but otherwise Inui simply showed his throat and kept his rocky expression.

“I’m going to find every weakness your data has and rip it wide open, Sadaharu,” Mizuki said, pulling him close.

“I’ll be intrigued to see what you come up with, Hajime.”

Inui flinched slightly at the sound of more of Eiji’s stomach contents hitting the water of the toilet bowl. His hand tightened around Eiji’s just slightly, enough for a tender, apologetic sort of support. They were arranged somewhat awkwardly — with Inui sitting just outside the stall and leaning in just enough to stick his hand in for Eiji to clutch — after learning that the slim stalls in the mens’ bathroom of their office did not have enough room to comfortably fit two adult men. Which was something that, normally, would not concern Inui — especially not with regards to Eiji — but this time it was proving to be a bit of a hinderance.

Eiji finished and rocked back onto his heels, his mouth covered with a wad of balled up toilet paper. His hair was pinned back with paper clips, which had been the closest thing Inui could find to hair clips when he’d gone searching.

“Inui, am I going to die?” Eiji asked, staring slightly unfocused at the toilet.

“Preliminary test results say no,” Inui said. “Though clearly it is unpleasant.”

Eiji hiccuped. There was a thick pause as both of them waited to make sure nothing else followed it. Once it seemed safe, Eiji groaned. “This is the last time I mix up my candy stashes. I’m going to keep all of my gummy bears clearly labelled, with a big, bright red one for the poison ones.”

Inui frowned, not bothering to point out that his juice-infused gummy bears technically were not poisonous. “Are you mad at me?”

Eiji tentatively went to shake his head, but the movement seemed to upset his delicate system and he stopped quickly. “No,” he said instead. “I think when I ran out of food, I started barfing up everything else in my body, so all of my anger is gone. Even the anger at myself for making this dumb mistake.”

Inui nodded, still frowning.

They fell silent for a moment, the only sounds in the room was the soft dripping of one of the faucets, and the occasional gurgle of Eiji’s digestive systems. They were still linked by the hand, Eiji holding onto Inui’s with as firm a grip as he could manage.

“Inui,” Eiji said. “If I do die, could you do some things for me?”

Inui quickly recalculated the odds of Eiji dying, and finding them to be very low still, he nodded anyway.

“First, please delete the browsing history on my work computer. I know you know all my passwords.”

Inui nodded. “Of course.”

“Also, please tell Oishi I love him,” Eiji said. “Tell him those were my last words, even if my last words are actually something stupid about hating gummy bears.”

“Oishi?” Inui asked. “He works in finance, doesn’t he?”

Eiji nodded. “Yeah. Interoffice romances are way more fun. Doing it in the copy room is way more exciting than anywhere else.”

Inui made a mental note to disinfect the copier next time he needed to use it. “Makes sense.”

“Also, tell Chibi-chan that I think he’s going to make a great salesman one day. My biggest regret is that I won’t be around to see him grow up,” Eiji said. Inui remembered the intern that Eiji had promptly adopted as his own. “And don’t tell him how I died. I want him to remember me how I was. Tell him I went down fighting.”

Inui nodded. “Of course.”

They fell silent again, their hands still softly linked. Inui had a feeling that if he tried to pull away, Eiji would just pull him closer, like a vice. He was trapped here for the duration, one way or the other.

Inui found he didn’t mind so much.

“Inui?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m really serious about the browser history thing,” Eiji said. “You might need to wipe my hard drive. Can a company fire you after you’re dead?”

“Do you want me to help you with that when we get back to your desk?” Inui asked.

Eiji slowly nodded. “If I survive.”

“If you survive,” Inui placatingly agreed. He squeezed Eiji’s hand tighter.

It's a rare occasion when the rest of the team actually leaves practice on time instead of pushing it further, drawing it later and later still into the evening hours.

By contrast, it isn't so rare for Suga to stay behind with him to lock up, and Daichi has grown accustomed to his comforting presence in the background each day after everyone else has left. He digs through his bag at the gymnasium entrance, nimble fingers sifting through the pocket he ordinarily keeps it in, frowning.

"The other one," comes Suga's amused voice. "Weren't you running late this morning?"

Automatically, before his mind even processes the actual words, Daichi's digging through the outer pocket of his bag, fingers closing triumphantly around the cool metal of the keys. "Ah," he says belatedly. "That's right. Thanks." It was exactly as Suga said: Daichi had been running late, had been in a hurry to unlock the doors for everyone else in the morning. The spare key had gone missing, so the duty had fallen to him, as the bearer of the main key.

There's a brief moment when the air hangs still after he flicks off the lights. The entire court goes dark, illuminated only by moonlight streaming through a window. He catches the soft rhythm of Suga's quiet breaths and matches them, synchronizing on autopilot to his vice-captain in the easy way he reads his entire team.

"You know," Suga murmurs, bumping his arm lightly—or so Daichi initially thinks, but instead of a brief point of contact, Suga lingers, their sides pressing together, shared warmth coming together right before the door threshold, just the two of them standing in an otherwise empty room. "Hinata always uses monikers like 'Grand King' and 'King of the Court' for flashier guys. But I don't see why we couldn't have more than one king on our team."

For a moment Daichi doesn't follow this logic, not until Suga leans onto him, head pillowing onto his shoulder in a private gesture, something just between the two of them, and when he meets Suga's eyes, the setter has a small, secretive smile playing at his lips, something that softens his features further. It's exactly the kind of thing that makes his own breath catch in his throat, seeing Suga framed just so by the moonlight, the shadows around them bringing a sharp contrast to the glow on Suga's skin.

"I don't think we need more than one," he answers dryly. Suga's fingers jab into his side without warning, playful, and Daichi lets out a yelp despite himself.

"No, we do," Suga insists, voice light. "You guide us and bring us together. Better than any of us can individually."

Daichi's mouth curves into a faint smile. "You guys did well when I was taken out for my face injury during Spring High. Give yourselves some credit."

"Yes, but you helped us establish our rhythm, didn't you? Give yourself some credit. We'd be lost without you."

Suga's lifts his head slightly, just enough that his gaze meets Daichi's through his eyelashes. Daichi's breath catches all over again, forgetting what it's like to breathe.

Thank you seems too simple a response for what's being conveyed here, too short.

But Suga shakes his head a bit, strands of his hair feathering against the side of Daichi's neck, and snickers quietly. "'King' is probably a bit too flashy for you, isn't it?"

"I think we get enough 'king' imagery with Kageyama, don't we?" Daichi cringes trying to imagine himself the same regal attire and a glistening crown on his head. It might suit Kageyama, but on him?

"Oh, I don't know about that," Suga says, straightening up only to exhale that statement right into Daichi's ear, breath ghosting along his skin. His grin is just a touch mischievous. "You could make a pretty regal king." His fingers slide up into Daichi's hair, tracing out the outline of a crown.

He knows already he's going to hate himself for this, face going red before the words even leave his lips, but he blurts it out anyway, hopeless against Suga's touch.

"If you'll be my queen?"

"Oh my god, you did not just say that."

"I did," Daichi murmurs, grinning back, and this time he catches Suga's hand and presses a kiss to his fingertips to the sound of Suga's breathless laugh, because yeah, maybe he wouldn't mind being king with a queen like this.
