Bonus Round 5: Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

RULES

Tatsuya turns the engine off; the familiar buzzing whirr like a vibrating cell phone turned to supersize dies away. Shuu won’t be long, but it’s no good to leave it running uselessly while he waits. He hefts Shuu’s helmet in his hand, the small chip in the visor that still needs to be replaced, the familiar weight. Shuu’s bike is back in the shop this week (the engine trouble’s finally bad enough that he’s getting it replaced), but Tatsuya doesn’t mind ferrying him around for a couple of weeks, taking him to work or on errands (checks to deposit, library books to return, groceries to buy). It’s nice to ride on his own, or to ride solo on his bike with Shuu at his side, but sometimes it’s nicer to have Shuu right behind him, arms around his waist, helmet against his shoulder.

Tatsuya pulls out his phone to check the weather; it’s not supposed to rain until late tonight, when they should be home (though he never likes to rule out a late-night excursion), but the sky’s been getting cloudier and cloudier. It’s not quite overcast now, brightly backlit by the sun, shining through the trees. He can see Shuu through the window of the ATM place, swearing at the machine because it won’t accept his checks. Tatsuya leans on the handlebars; it’s cute. Finally the machine seems to cooperate, and Shuu finishes his transactions; Tatsuya’s still leaning on the handlebars when he comes out, replacing his wallet in his jacket pocket.

“Sorry it took so long,” says Shuu; he kisses Tatsuya from the curb, where he has to lean down an awfully long way (but Tatsuya doesn’t mind looking up at him from here).

“That’s okay,” says Tatsuya. “I got to watch you.”

“Yeah, my ineptitude at depositing a fucking check,” says Shuu, but he kisses Tatsuya on the nose before taking back his helmet and sliding it over his head.

Tatsuya puts on his own and revs up the engine, waiting for Shuu to get on all the way, arms tight around his waist before he turns it toward the street. He doesn’t need to tell Shuu to hold on before they’re off, weaving through traffic on the busier main roads, and maybe sharing a lane with a car is illegal and dangerous, but it’s the faster way to the scenic route, and if it makes Shuu hold on just a little bit tighter as they head forward into the wind.

“The music here sucks,” says Daiki, but Taiga hasn’t been listening to it.

How can he, when he’s here with the two of them? They haven’t been talking, sure, but Taiga’s been looking and he kind of doesn’t have much room for other senses (well, touch, too; feet against his barstool and hands grazing his legs almost as if they’re not there). He could have been eating and drinking anything, though he’s starting to feel the alcohol, as opposed to Daiki’s one drink and Tatsuya’s unlimited tolerance. Taiga kind of wants to lean his head on Tatsuya’s shoulder, look up at his face, see his pretty lower lashes the way he only gets to when they’re about to go to sleep.

Tatsuya looks at him, smiling like he knows exactly what Taiga’s thinking, holding the empty shot glass in his hand. “You about done, too?”

“I’m not,” Daiki says, but Taiga can see how tired he’s getting, curling around the edges like old paper, leaning steadily more and more on the edge of the bar.

“Yeah,” Taiga says. “Sorry if you wanted to stay.”

Tatsuya smiles, still too reserved to say he wants to be where the two of them are, but he’s good at making that part obvious enough now, much more than he has.

“Let’s go home,” says Daiki, hooking his arm around Tatsuya’s waist, and Taiga could say something about not being done but he’s too tired and even though there’s something at the tip of his tongue it falls off when he looks at Daiki, the softness on his face as Tatsuya digs in his pocket for his wallet.

“Let me get it,” says Taiga.

“I drank the most,” says Tatsuya, but he always does and it’s not fair; Taiga’s about to whine but Daiki’s hand reaches over to grasps his as if to tell him to drop it.

Tatsuya leaves the tip for the bartender under the shot glass (what did he have last, whiskey or vodka?) and starts to walk toward the door, seemingly unbothered by the hold Daiki’s got around his waist. Taiga catches up; they can’t all fit through the doorway at once but they can stand together and wait for a cab, Tatsuya walking out close to the street to flag one down while Daiki huddles in the unwelcome cold next to Taiga. He falls half-asleep in the cab, leaning on Taiga’s shoulder; Tatsuya looks over and his gaze meets Taiga’s; his smile’s easy and that’s got nothing to do with liquor.

The winter is particularly cold this year, but that's how Masako likes it the best, the city bowing under the weight of the snow that settles upon it. All of the youkai or other creatures who live here can, at the very least, deal with the cold. There isn't anyone that she needs to check on, to make sure that they're surviving the winter okay. She can focus her attention on other things.

Right now, that means preparing for Tatsuya's visit. She felt the moment he crossed the border into Akita, and he has company.

She hasn't seen Tatsuya for years. He must have grown from the quiet, insecure boy that he was when he first moved to Akita. She's received updates on him from Alex, who was previously his mentor, the caretaker of Los Angeles the same way that Masako is the caretaker of Akita. It will be nice to receive the updates first-hand, for a change.

His companion is a werewolf, and Masako is certain that they've crossed paths before. There are packs of werewolves, constantly moving between regions to avoid becoming too attached to the one territory. Masako doesn't think that this one has been in a pack before, or if he has, it must have been a long time ago. She has sentries set up in the streets, in the icicles growing from street lamps, in the snowmen that the human children like to build, to keep an eye on her territory. From what she can tell, this werewolf's sole loyalty is to Tatsuya. It's the kind of care that he deserves.

Tatsuya knows not to seek her out directly; Masako sees people in her own time. She'll offer him a place to stay but until then, he'll have to wait.

By the time she walks out to meet them, Tatsuya and his werewolf have started having a snowball fight with each other. She hangs back, watching them play. He seems calmer now, his demonic energy firmly under control. She remembers the long days she spent with him, building on all the lessons that Alex tried to teach him, relieved that at least she seemed to have better luck; Tatsuya is all about control and restraint. He's naturally inclined to it, preferring to think first and act later unless he's caught up in the moment. It seems that lately, he's getting caught up in it less frequently and if he is, it's in the best possible way.

"Ahh, Atsushi!" Tatsuya shouts as his companion pounces at him, with much less finesse in his human form than he would have in his wolf form. He's big, knocking Tatsuya down onto his back, sinking into the snow.

Atsushi grins at him, lifting a snowball and pressing it into the side of Tatsuya's face. Tatsuya's laughter fills the street, and Masako finds herself smiling, moving closer to them. Atsushi doesn't notice her, still kneeling over Tatsuya, taking his face in both hands and kissing him, like the rest of the world around them doesn't even exist.

"You've found an interesting partner, Tatsuya," Masako says by way of greeting, stopping a short distance from them.

Tatsuya turns his head, still lying under Atsushi, and smiles up at her. "Araki-sensei. I really have. This is Atsushi."

"I've been in Akita before," Atsushi says, getting up and inclining his head to her. "I never met you before, though. Most people probably don't, but Tatsu-chin's special, isn't he?"

"Atsushi," Tatsuya protests, looking embarrassed.

Masako decides that she likes Atsushi. She lets him see her smile, nodding in agreement. "Yes he is."

Mayuzumi looks up when he hears footsteps approaching. "Don't talk to me."

Akashi stops in the doorway of their bedroom, two mugs of tea held in his hands, and blinks at him. "I wasn't going to."

"Good." Mayuzumi flips through the pages of his notebook, frowning at his handwriting. It shouldn't be this hard to read his own writing, but he'd scrawled these notes down for the next handful of fills while he was on the train, and he wasn't leaning on the steadiest of surfaces. He frowns a little harder, and then startles when Akashi steps closer to the desk, putting down one of the mugs of tea.

"This is for you," Akashi tells him. "Or was that too much talking, for your tastes?"

"Shut up," Mayuzumi grumbles, and picks up the mug, holding it in both hands. It's nice to give himself a break from holding his pen after such a long time, he supposes. Reluctantly, he nods towards Akashi. "Thank you."

"I worry about your health," Akashi tells him, sitting on the edge of their bed, facing Mayuzumi. "Did you have lunch today?"

Mayuzumi shrugs. "That would have taken too long. I had fills to write."

"You won't be able to write if you run out of energy because you haven't eaten," Akashi points out. "Even just a snack."

"Seijuurou," Mayuzumi interrupts. "I can't write when you're talking to me."

"Of course," Akashi replies, turning away. "My mistake."

It would probably be easier to organise the prompts that he wants to fill on his computer, but there's something about writing by hand that makes everything go that little bit smoother for Mayuzumi. It just suddenly becomes easier to organise his thoughts, and even if Mayuzumi ends up actually writing on his laptop, it helps to have his notes opened up beside him to glance at whenever he needs to.

Akashi is silent as Mayuzumi writes the next few fills on his list. They're going smoothly, for once, and he's knocked four of them out, back to back, before he realises that it's been an entire hour since Akashi has come home, and they've barely spoken, and Akashi hasn't even interrupted his writing to ask if he wants to eat dinner.

With a sigh, Mayuzumi pinches the bridge of his nose and shuts his eyes to let them rest for a moment. "Are you hungry?"

"Are you finished writing?" Akashi asks in return.

"Not finished, no," Mayuzumi replies, shaking his head. "But I can stop here, for now."

"How much of your time can I have?" Akashi asks, as they pull leftovers out of the fridge to heat up. "Fifteen minutes, while you eat dinner? Am I pushing too far, if I ask for half an hour?"

"For you?" Mayuzumi asks, and takes a deep breath. Akashi has been incredibly patient with him recently and in return, Mayuzumi has mostly just been ignoring him. "Maybe—and I'm not making any promises—I can give you an hour."

Ryouta isn’t very proud of his past deeds, but they’re what built his experience and his current skills so he can’t truly discard them as if they didn’t happen. He was a pathetic thief before joining Prince Shuuzou’s Shepherds, lost in the streets among many other people just as helpless as him. Naturally, they tended to stick together, and rely on each other to survive. Not that it implied they were a tight-knit group.

This is why he’s genuinely surprised to learn the latest news circulating in the camp, disbelief painted on his face whenever someone confirms his inquiries and then he sets off to look for that person. He’s striding into tents like a tornado, leaving as soon as he sees that it was the wrong one, ignoring the questioning glances the other Shepherds throw at him.

It then occurs to him that people can’t change that much in the span of two years (what a hypocrite), so he heads to the one tent he’s sure he will find him.

And indeed, Shougo is examining a sword, one they just recently acquired.

Ryouta frowns.

“You’re not supposed to be touching things that aren’t yours,” he says.

Shougo’s raised eyebrow when he turns around signifies he already knew Ryouta was with the Shepherds. This piece of information doesn’t trouble Ryouta as much as he thought it would, given the way they carried out their missions when they were together—fishing for information and making people talk were their specialty, and Ryouta has a fleeting feeling of nostalgia coursing through him.

“You’d know I’m always stealing people’s stuff,” Shougo laughs. “This broadsword is exactly one of the swords my last employer wanted.”

“And you want to steal it to give it to him?”

“Nah, too troublesome. I wasn’t paid the amount he promised because of one fucking missing sword, he’s a bastard.”

Shougo is tracing the curve of the sword, grinning slightly, as he thoroughly looks at it, like it’s the best treasure he’s found in years. Ryouta remembers how fascinated Shougo was by swords, daggers, knives, or anything that can cut down people—they’re his weapon of choice, and he’s damn skilled at it.

Ryouta takes a deep breath, and steps forward.

“Why are you here?”

And Shougo’s eyes shift, the glimmer of passion transforming into one of mischief, as his lips tug upwards in a smirk. He brandishes the broadsword and points it at Ryouta’s neck. Ryouta doesn't flinch.

“I guess I was curious, felt the need to discover the world from another angle, and shit. You disappeared and never came back. Why?”

“We got separated during our last mission and you never showed up at any of our hideouts. Why?”

Days of crawling in dirty streets, injured with no support, hopeful gazes directed at crowds expecting to see a familiar face. Ryouta doesn’t wish to relive those days where he has truly been scared; scared of having failed, or having being left behind like a rag doll.

Shougo’s smirk vanishes, but his eyes are still burning with something akin to disdain and, dare he say, weariness.

“Shuuzou pays well, and he feeds us. I just have to fight. I don’t see why I shouldn’t stay.”

He lowers his hand, and holds the handle out to Ryouta. The latter takes it, silently, and stares at him. Shougo grins.

“See ya later, Ryouta.”

He brushes past Ryouta, waving his hand in farewell, and Ryouta swallows back the feeling of dread he’s been overwhelmed with for the past hours.

So he hadn’t obtained this food legitimately, it’s not like a bigass castle like this can’t afford to give this away for free. Especially to just one guy, just one soldier who’s a little bit more weary and torn-up than he ought to be. It’s not that he’s weak or that he needs attention; he’s just pretty fucking hungry and eating something might make him focus better and rest better, and if they’re not going to give him any of the shit that the dainty nobles only ever half-finish, well, it’s not like Shougo’s not used to having to steal things.

“Shougo-kun, there you are!”

Speaking of dainty nobles, the most dainty and noble of them all is standing before him, arms crossed, broadsword (that a skinny guy like him shouldn’t be able to wield) hanging at his waist. So he’s been caught, it wouldn’t be the first time.

“I’m not giving you any of my food,” Shougo says (not that Ryouta’s wanting for food, but he’d ask for it anyway and then pout when he isn’t given any).

“That’s not yours; you stole it from the kitchens,” says Ryouta, sitting down next to Shougo. “But I’m watching my weight.”

“You don’t need to,” says Shougo. “You work out; you could stand to put on some more. Leave a little less realm-defending to people like us.”

“You don’t like your job?”

“I don’t like not being appreciated,” says Shougo. “Living at the castle’s okay, I guess.”

Ryouta looks at him, as if measuring carefully; he’s more clever (only by a little) than he pretends to be. Shougo scowls. He’s probably not going to like wherever this ends up; he tears off another piece of bread with his teeth (fresh, hard crust and soft inner in his mouth, rich and hearty; it’s been too long since he’s gotten this good of a meal).

“Anyway, I was going to bring this for you,” says Ryouta, taking a piece of jerky out of his pocket. “But if you’ve got—”

“Give it to me,” says Shougo.

“Not if you’re being that ungrateful,” says Ryouta, and, oh, does he want to use his superior status right now (it’s so blatantly obvious Shougo almost chokes on it).

But he doesn’t, and that resistance is worth something, even if it’s not as much as Ryouta thinks it is. Shougo stands up, kisses him on the mouth, and snatches the jerky from his hand.

“Thanks.”

Shougo is late, as usual. Ryouta sighs and rolls his eyes; at least the shop windows are painstakingly cleaned so he can get a good look at his reflection, smoothing over his bangs and making sure there’s nothing on his face. And it gives him time to look at the wares for sale, overpriced trinkets and spices, silver and teas and a wide assortment of things he doesn’t need to buy. Why this is the designated meeting spot, well—Shougo had picked it; he gets the blame. If Ryouta stays long enough for him to show up.

Shougo doesn’t approach from the hills; Ryouta’s looking that way but he hears the sound of boots on the cobblestones, a breeze of ocean air, and there’s Shougo, hair wild, cloak with mud stuck to the bottom, hurrying down the street, no horse in sight. Ryouta raises his eyebrows; this can’t be good (it’s never good with Shougo, but still).

“Hey,” says Shougo. “I got us passage up north on a ship. Paid in full with what I got from my horse.”

Ryouta wrinkles his nose. “Do I have to work?”

“No, princess,” says Shougo with a theatrical sigh. “My horse is worth more than cabin boy fare.”

It turns out to be not worth much more, not that Ryouta had been expecting first class. It would be nice to have a bigger room on the ship, more rations at dinner, but this isn’t a pleasure cruise, and the small bed’s plenty big enough for both of them, the waves rocking them to sleep while Shougo’s curled around Ryouta’s body, his unkempt hair soft against Ryouta’s neck. This isn’t the adventure Shougo had promised him, all of those years ago, when he’d been barely a decent bandit and Ryouta had just been the youngest child of a metalworker, unbound to his father’s business or anything, really.

“I’ll take you somewhere worth seeing,” Shougo had said. “If you’re really that bored.”

And he hasn’t yet; the middle of the ocean in a transport ship seems no closer than lying at home listening to the sounds of the shop a few meters over as his father worked into the night. And maybe it’s foolish to put his faith in someone like Shougo, but it’s not like Ryouta hasn’t done plenty of stupid things become and come out on top. Maybe he’ll run out of luck (or maybe Shougo’s tongue will do them both in), but maybe not.

Shougo is sitting on the large tree that’s covering half the road. He’s always thought it kind of looks weird with its horizontal trunk thick enough to crack the skull of anyone bashing their head against it (who would do that? not him), and then it bends and reaches towards the sky, as if it’s keeping an eye on the island with its gigantic leaves. It has become the symbol of their island; a weird-ass tree that produces star-shaped yellow fruits. Since he was a kid Shougo kept hearing stories about the magical power this fruit had, or the healthy properties it apparently had, or the stupid legend about people being eternally bound if they eat it together. Shougo isn't the kind of guy who believes in that; this is more of Shintarou's genre and no way in hell that Shougo is going to associate with him. He's not insane.

He has a paopu fruit right now in his lap, though he isn't looking at it. He has to admit this tree is pretty nice to relax on and for admiring the view. The ocean is big and clear, the blue of the sky reflecting on it and illuminating the whole island with pretty colors. Yeah, he has to stop hanging out with Ryouta.

“Shougo-kun, do you want to come train with us?”

Shougo resists the urge to snap because whenever he spars with Daiki he somehow always makes a fool of himself, like tripping and getting hit in the face, and honestly he's sick of being on the receiving end of Ryouta's jokes and laughing. Somewhat.

“No, I don't want to hang out with you losers,” he says.

They've known each other for over ten years, so of course Ryouta doesn't take offense and laughs. He climbs on the trunk and sits next to him, as usual invading his personal space like it didn't exist for a reason, and looks at him with fucking sparkling eyes.

“You're going to come anyway.”

He says this on such a confident tone that Shougo feels exposed and naked under his gaze. There's nothing provocative, just a raw statement and the distinct belief that it can't go wrong.

“I'm coming just to see you getting your ass handed to you,” Shougo replies, looking away.

This brings a grin on Ryouta's face, the kind that promises mischief, blossoming under the right circumstances.

“I haven't eaten something sweet in a while, so I'll buy you paopu cake if I lose, but if I win you buy me paopu cake!”

Ryouta then hops over the tree and goes back to the beach. Shougo rolls his eyes, puts down the paopu fruit on the tree, and follows Ryouta.

Ryouta could have as well told him he wanted to eat the fruit.
