Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

It wasn’t that Toudu had any interest in gravure magazines. He didn’t. He really didn’t. If he wanted porn, that’s what the Internet was for. If he wanted softcore porn, that was still what the Internet was for! And if all he wanted was to look at pretty girls in bikinis, he could check out swimsuit catalogues.

His frustration with the entire gravure industry had nothing to do with Makishima liking the magazines, he told himself. It was just that the magazines always made the girls look so childish! He didn’t want to believe that Makishima also went for the childish look, especially if it was their thighs he was checking out but…

Well. He’d leafed through fifteen magazines for references and was now as ready as he could ever be.

The white thigh-high stockings he was wearing were sheer, translucent enough to show every line of muscle and the curve of his calves. The tops of the stockings were edged with lace and bedecked with little blue flowers. It was as innocent as Toudou could manage, given that he was also wearing a frilly white dress with it. The dress was white-dotted Swiss muslin, just long enough to reach past the tops of his thighs, and thin enough that the brown areola of his nipples showed through clearly.

He posed on his side, mimicking Kate Winslet in Titanic as so many girls seemed to do, and double checked that the white headband with its oversized white silk rose was still in place. Yes. Okay. He was ready for his own private gravure shoot with his audience of one.

At least, that was the plan. The longer Toudou had to wait for Makishima, the more he began to feel that Makishima would show up and laugh his head off. There was no guarantee that Makishima was into men and besides, even if he were, he might not be into crossdressing. Maybe he only thought this gravure look was attractive on girls.

In that case, all the trouble Toudou had gone to with shaving his entire body and painting his nails as well as learning how to apply makeup would be useless. Worse than useless. It might ruin his friendship with Makishima!

The best thing to do was just get dressed again and leave. If he hurried, he’d be out the door before Makishima returned.

As Toudou sat up, the bedroom door swung open.

It's only when I finished writing the drabble I realized it's not shippy,,

***

To be quite honest, Miyaji always threatens to throw pineapples at anyone who annoys him, but nobody thinks he’d ever do it. What they don’t know is that he keeps a nice pineapple in his locker, under his folded clothes, ready to tear to shreds whoever stupid enough to cross the line of stupidity.

Right now, he thinks he’s going to use for the first his secret weapon.

He was waiting for Yuuya to come out after his talk with Ootsubo—some captain talk for next year. With nothing to do, he sat on a bench in the club-room, thinking everyone else went home, and that’s when he hears it.

“Come on Shin-chan, nobody is looking!”

You see, when people are alone in a club-room and that the only other available room is the showers, they’re bound to imagine the worst, and in this particular case Miyaji just knows he’s going to kill someone. With the pineapple. How does mashed first years with a pineapple dressing sound?

“How many times do I have to say no?”

“You’re no fun, live a little! It’s just me!”

“This is inappropriate.”

I’ll show you what’s inappropriate, Miyaji thinks, his fingers twitching and thirsting for some blood. Did these guys even consider the consequences of what they're doing? What if someone else stepped into the room and heard their ridiculous banter? A third year who would laugh at them for the rest of the year? Another stupid first year who would blackmail them?

At least Miyaji is just going to beat them up to shake a bit what is supposed to be their brain.

Midorima should be smarter than that. Miyaji is unfazed by Takao’s behavior because that brat is, well, a brat, and he doesn’t listen to anyone. It’s astonishing they’re always attached at the hip—should he wonder how Midorima can stand Takao, or the other way around?

“I promise I won’t laugh.”

“You’re going to laugh, don’t lie.”

“Shin-chaaan.”

Miyaji hears a loud and exasperated sigh, and he knows that Midorima lost. Midorima is always losing.

For a few seconds there is no sound. Then Midorima’s deep voice rise, angrier than he’s ever heard.

“’Useless first years, who do you think you are? Are you calling this a screen? Two laps, now! Don’t argue! Midorima, don’t leave your shitty toys around, I’m going to smash them! Takao stop laughing like an idiot and go run like the others, you’re a first year too!’”

This is beyond what Miyaji thought it was.

This is a declaration of war.

Takao doesn’t even have the time to open his big mouth and chortle that Miyaji barges into the showers, and throws the pineapple at random. He hears a yell and may have hit Takao in the shoulder, but truthfully he doesn’t care.

“I'm going to skin you alive, you punks!”

Then he registers the fact these idiots are only wearing a towel around theirs waists, and that's the last straw.

“Get dressed and go the fuck home! Do I have to hold your hand for that, too?!”

Midorima and Takao duck their heads, and do as they're told, though Miyaji catches a snigger or two.

They're so dead tomorrow.

"Let me try on your glasses," Yamaguchi says. They're both sitting on Tsukishima's floor, a foot of space in between them. Yamaguchi's desperate to close that gap, but the idea of Tsukishima knowing that makes his stomach swoop uncomfortably.

"No," Tsukishima says without looking up from his book.

Yamaguchi puts his phone on the floor and slides over an inch. "Come on, Tsukki. It'll just take a minute. I know you don't need them to read."

Tsukishima grunts, but doesn't stop Yamaguchi when he slides over again.

"Is that a yes?" Yamaguchi asks.

"Yeah, fine," Tsukishima says, rolling his eyes. "Make it quick, though."

Yamaguchi is surprised and delighted by his success. He reaches out to grab them just as Tsukishima lifts his hand to take them off himself and Yamaguchi winds up wrapping his fingers Tsukishima’s wrist instead. Tsukishima pauses. Yamaguchi pauses. They stare at each other and both look away quickly, and Yamaguchi’s hand is still around Tsukishima's wrist. Yamaguchi’s stupid fingers squeeze tight instead of letting go, and Tsukishima sucks in a sharp breath.

Yamaguchi’s eyes widen. "Sorry, Tsukki!" he squeaks and lets go, scrambling up to run out of Tsukishima’s room and down the hall, into the bathroom.

"Stupid stupid," he mutters to himself. He left his phone on Tsukishima’s floor, meaning he can't claim his mom texted him and told him to come home, but maybe if he stays in here long enough, he'll figure out a way to climb into the toilet and flush himself to another dimension so he'll never have to deal with the fact that he almost made his feelings blisteringly, awfully transparent. So he guesses he’ll just go back and pretend like nothing weird happened. Tsukki's good at ignoring things. He'll probably just go along with it.

Yamaguchi nods at his own reflection in the bathroom mirror. Yes. Good. He splashes his face with water and takes a deep breath, ready to face Tsukishima again.

Then there's a knock at the door and Yamaguchi's heart stops. "Yes?" he says.

"Are you okay?" Tsukishima asks through the door.

"Everything's peachy!" Yamaguchi calls back. God. Peachy, Tadashi? Really? "Be out in a minute."

Tsukishima doesn't answer right away. "Okay," he says after a second, and his voice sounds small and wrong, which makes Yamaguchi want to fling the door open, but a second later, Yamaguchi hears footsteps as he walks away again.

When Yamaguchi gets back to the room, Tsukishima is sitting crosslegged on the bed. His book is gone.

"Hey," Yamaguchi says.

"Hey," Tsukishima replies, and stares at Yamaguchi. It's the same stare he uses on the court while sizing up his opponents and it's so weird to be on this side of it. Yamaguchi shivers. "You never did it, you know."

"What?" he asks, confused, walking over to the bed. There are a whole lot of things Yamaguchi’s never done.

Tsukishima looks up at Yamaguchi and gestures to his glasses. "Don't you want to try them on?"

"Oh!" Yamaguchi is relieved. Tsukishima’s picking off where they left off; he can work with that. "Sure, Tsukki." He holds out his hand, but Tsukishima shakes his head and pats the place in front of him.

"You want them, come and get them."

Yamaguchi’s eyes go so wide they nearly fall out of his head. He studies Tsukishima carefully, looking for any sign that he’s joking, but he only gets that calculating stare in return. “Um.”

Tsukishima pats the bed again. Before he can talk himself out of it, Yamaguchi sits, too, folding his legs so their knees are touching. He sees it when Tsukishima’s eyes flicker down to their legs, then back up to Yamaguchi’s face. Tsukishima’s expression settles into something more relaxed, curious even, as he waits to see what Yamaguchi will do. Yamaguchi can’t really blame him, considering he isn’t even sure what he’ll do.

“Um,” he says again. He lifts his arms and hesitates, but then he leans forward, noticing as Tsukishima sucks in another quick gulp of air, the same way he had earlier when Yamaguchi’s hand squeezed his wrist. He slides his fingers underneath the arms of Tsukishima’s glasses, lifting them up and tugging them gently off of his face. Tsukishima blinks owlishly, and there’s something vulnerable about Tsukishima when he has his glasses off. Maybe that’s why he’d said no to Yamaguchi wearing them at first. Or maybe he sensed intuitively that Yamaguchi would be a complete weirdo about this, which he has been, so nice work, Tsukki!

Yamaguchi tries on the glasses, and the whole world tilts. Okay, not really, but there’s a dizzy downward slope to his vision that wasn’t there before and his stomach turns over unhappily. It’s good he’s still sitting down.

“I don’t know how you see out of these,” Yamaguchi says, pushing the bridge up his nose, like Tsukishima often does.

“Well, they’re not for you,” Tsukishima points out. “Right now, I can see you okay, but everything else is a ball of fuzz.”

“That’s it?” Yamaguchi asks. “Everything other than me is really fuzz?”

Tsukishima nods. “Some is brighter fuzz.”

Yamaguchi grins. It shouldn’t be exciting that he’s Tsukishima’s only focal point, but he can’t help it. He’s thrived on attention from Tsukki for as long as they’ve known each other. He takes the glasses off again, but when Tsukishima reaches for his hand to take them back, he pulls his arm out of Tsukishima’s reach and clutches the glasses tightly without even thinking about it.

“No, wait,” Yamaguchi says. “I never get to see you with your glasses off for more than a couple of minutes.”

Tsukishima tilts his head. “So what?”

“So nothing!” God, he’s being so weird and he knows it. He knows he should just give Tsukki his glasses back, but he can’t. He tightens his grip on the frames. “So it’s interesting!” he says, an answer a little closer to the truth. “I get to look at you differently,” he finally mumbles, dropping his head and staring down at his lap.

“Then shouldn’t you be looking at me?”

Yamaguchi’s head snaps up again.

“What’s different?” Tsukishima asks, leaning forward. Yamaguchi swallows but doesn’t look away again.

“You – you look –“ Prettier, his mind supplies, though that’s not right. Softer, maybe. Tsukishima’s huge eyes are trained on his and if Yamaguchi were so inclined, he could probably count individual eyelashes. “I like seeing you how almost no one else does.”

Tsukishima’s forehead wrinkles up, confused. “But you’ve always done that.” He reaches for Yamaguchi’s hand again, and this time Yamaguchi allows it, letting out a long exhale as Tsukishima’s fingers run over the back of his hand. He pulls his glasses out of Yamaguchi’s hand again, but instead of putting them back on, he sets them on his bedside table. Then he holds Yamaguchi’s hand again and leans in.

“Tsukki?” Yamaguchi says, hopeful and confused and disbelieving, a whole jumbled up mess of feelings.

“I’ll stop if you want,” Tsukishima says.

“Don’t stop,” Yamaguchi says, as Tsukishima comes even closer still and his world tilts sideways again. “I don’t want you to stop.”

Tsukishima doesn’t reply, unless kissing counts as a reply. His mouth is warm against Yamaguchi’s, and he seems a little hesitant, too, which makes Yamaguchi feel better. He tries to keep his eyes open, still needing confirmation that this is really happening, but Tsukishima is a blur this close up and Yamaguchi can’t focus when Tsukishima’s tongue grazes his bottom lip. His eyes slip closed as his free hand finds Tsukishima’s thigh, squeezing it as he holds on for dear life. Tsukishima jerks under Yamaguchi’s hand and when he pulls away, his cheeks and his nose, right over where his glasses have left indentations, are pink.

And his eyes – without the frames and glass to hide behind – are so, so wide. Looking at Tsukki like this, Yamaguchi feels lost but he likes it. He likes it so, so much.

“Yamaguchi,” Tsukishima says roughly.

“Was that –“ Yamaguchi clears his throat and starts again, straightening his spine. “Do you want to do that again?”

Yes,” Tsukishima says. This time Yamaguchi’s the one to lean forward and he doesn’t stop until Tsukishima’s back hits the mattress.

Tatsuya has taken control of the kitchen.

He's somehow managed to spread things all over the counter while also making it look incredibly ordered. There's a bunch of spices here, chopped vegetables there, perfectly cut meat sitting in a bowl and waiting to be cooked.

Taiga stands back, arms folded across his chest, and smiles. "Are you sure you don't need help there, Tatsuya?"

"I'm fine," Tatsuya replies easily. "I'm in my element, here."

"This is my apartment," Taiga points out. "You're a guest. I'm pretty sure that I should be cooking for you."

"If you really want, you can cook next time," Tatsuya replies. "You were craving curry. I'm good at making it. End of story."

"Is that all it takes to make you visit?" Taiga asks with a soft laugh. "All I have to do is text you and ask if you want to go out for curry, and you'll get so offended that you'll come right over and make some instead."

"Taiga, we're in America again," Tatsuya says, shaking his head. "We can't just go out and expect good food like we could a few years ago. Not with things like this, anyway."

"Right." Taiga smiles even wider, content to just stand there and watch.

To be fair, Tatsuya is magic in the kitchen. He's just as elegant with this as he is with everything else that he does. It's not like Tatsuya's even putting on a show, but it's satisfying to watch him in the kitchen, where every movement he makes is perfect and measured. Just like when he's on the basketball court. He might be doing something entirely different, but it's beautiful all the same.

It helps that Tatsuya's in Taiga's kitchen. It fills him with a warm feeling, to think of Tatsuya making himself at home in Taiga's kitchen, making himself at home in Taiga's home. Taiga has been contriving more and more excuses to have Tatsuya drop by recently, and he knows exactly why he's doing it. He's pretty sure that Tatsuya knows too. He'll take the fact that Tatsuya keeps on coming as a good sign.

"You don't even want me to start on the rice?" Taiga asks. "I can put it into the rice cooker. At least let me do that much."

"If you really want," Tatsuya relents, emptying the bowl of meat into the frypan to let the pieces grill before he adds them to the curry.

He reaches for Taiga as they walk past each other, arm wrapping around his waist. Taiga returns the gesture, squeezing gently.

"I'm glad we're here, Tatsuya," Taiga murmurs. "That we're both here. Together."

With a smile, Tatsuya places his hand on Taiga's arm. "Yeah. Me too."

"Are you… jealous?" Taiga asks, the night before his first game. "That it's me going out there, not you?"

Tatsuya laughs in reply. The answer is obvious, but perhaps that's why Taiga feels the need to ask in the first place. Him and his constant need to keep the peace, to go out of his way to make sure that everyone is happy, even when there's nothing he can do about it.

Now, at least, with the two of them sitting on their couch, in their apartment, it doesn't hurt as much.

"Of course I am," Tatsuya tells him, shoving Taiga but then climbing into his lap and kissing him. "I'm so jealous, but it doesn't feel like I used to. I still have a lot of pride, but most of all, I'm just proud of you. I'm happy for you."

Taiga sighs against his mouth, kissing him back. "You don't… uh…"

"Secretly resent you for succeeding in all the ways that I never could?" Tatsuya supplies, raising an eyebrow.

Taiga goes tense beneath him. "Yeah. That."

"I'm not sixteen years old any more, Taiga. Or thirteen, for that matter," Tatsuya tells him. He's already gone through those theatrics, several times in the past. He has no need to revisit that again.

Especially not when this is much more satisfying. Supporting Taiga is much more rewarding than competing against him; Taiga's victories feel like his own and maybe Tatsuya will never truly give up competing against him, at least on some level, but he's okay with that when it means that it spurs him to better himself, rather than sitting over him like some kind of crushing weight.

"You don't resent me," Taiga clarifies, and Tatsuya laughs again.

"Ah yes, that's exactly why I've been living with you in Chicago for the past couple of years when we could be in L.A. instead, and been dating you for the past four. Because I secretly hate your guts."

"Okay, fine," Taiga sighs.

"If I still made you doubt that, Taiga, then I have some work to do," Tatsuya says seriously. "I love you."

Taiga nods, burying his face in the curve of Tatsuya's neck. "I know. It's just me, being paranoid."

"You don't have to be," Tatsuya tells him. "I promise. I can't wait for you to play your first professional game tomorrow. Doesn't matter how it goes, I'm already so damn proud of you."

It's a feeling that Tatsuya holds onto, when he's cheering the Bulls on as they enter the court, Taiga there with the rest of them. He might be nervous at first, but he settles right down when he bounces the ball during warm ups. Like he was made to be there.

Tatsuya wholeheartedly believes it.

Makoto felt his legs shake under him, his lungs aching, as he stood atop the cold solid platform, the weight of the medal around his neck the only thing grounding him in the roaring stadium. Bronze. Bronze. No one had expected him, a lanky swimmer from rural Japan, to make it anywhere close to the podium—and yet here he was. Makoto wasn't entirely sure that all the wetness of his face was from the pool.

As the anthem of the gold medalist began to play, Makoto searched across the length of the pool where the next swimmers were beginning to warm up. It was easy enough to find what he was looking for. Haru was standing on one leg, stretching his quadriceps and staring back at Makoto with a gaze as heavy as the medal around Makoto's neck. The intensity of it cut the breath from Makoto's lungs, made him swallow involuntarily. I saw you, that look said. I was watching.

He'd known that Haru would be watching, but it was different like this, somehow. He loved Haru's eyes. He'd let Haru's eyes scrape his skin, bore into his soul, set him on fire, drown him, pin him to that podium and keep him there. If he was honest, he always would have.

When the ceremony was finished, he stepped off the podium and went to the stands to watch. It was Haru's turn, after all. There was no rule that said Makoto wasn't allowed to watch back.

Haru watched him for the rest of the night—at the athlete's banquet, at their medal celebrations, on the walk back to Olympic Village with some of Team Japan's other athletes. His stare set Makoto's heart hammering, the same way it did back when they were in high school middle school, elementary school, swimming side by side and dreaming of nothing beyond doing the same tomorrow. He'd always known what it meant for a boy to set his heart racing, but Haru was his friend. No sense in ruining that.

"My room's this way. I'll see you all tomorrow," Makoto said when they got to his junction. The rest waved goodbye, but Haru lingered. As soon as the others were out of sight, Makoto asked, "Haru?"

Without warning, Haru reached out, fingers slipping underneath the open fabric of Makoto's jacket, and pulled out the bronze medal. He traced the engravings under his thumb for a moment, almost reverent, pulling the ribbon taut around Makoto's neck. For a terrifying moment, Makoto was worried he might let himself follow that pull.

"You've got one too, you know," Makoto said softly instead, "and gold's a lot better than bronze, anyway."

"I like this one because it's yours," Haru said simply. He let the medal fall lightly back against Makoto's chest and then looked up to meet Makoto's eyes one more time. There were hundreds of words behind Haru's stare, but for once, Makoto found it impossible to translate.

"Goodnight," Haru said. Suddenly the moment was gone, vanished into the cool night air. Haru was halfway down the hall before Makoto managed to get out a quick "Goodnight, Haru" of his own. As he lay awake in bed that night, his bronze medal stowed carefully on his bedside table, he couldn't help feeling like he was missing something important.

Masako is used to hunting youkai at home, but this is a strange place, with strange mythology, and she can't quite put her finger on the pulse of it. America is too new, she thinks to herself as she loads up her gun and stashes a box full of ammo in her handbag. Just to be safe, she thinks to herself. She's here to play basketball, but she never knows what she'll run into while she's here. Better safe than sorry.

On this side of the Pacific Ocean, the air doesn't smell as clean, and that has nothing to do with the chemicals that may or may not be hanging in the air. It's about belief, about folklore, about the stories that the people living here have brought with them, from all over the world, to pool together and wind around each other until it becomes something new entirely. Masako is used to monsters she can identify by sight and by name and sometimes, by their tracks. She isn't equipped for the monsters that live here.

She's meant to be shopping with her teammates from the Japanese Women's Basketball team but clothes and jewellery can only hold her attention for so long. She'd rather explore the streets and so she slips away, making sure that the captain knows when to expect her to return to their hotel, and goes walking through the streets of Los Angeles on her own.

It's not the best decision she's made, and she knows it while she's making it, and doesn't let it stop her. She wants to know what the streets feel like here, what it's like to walk among monsters that she doesn't recognise.

She doesn't see any, but the hairs on the back of her neck begin standing up after a while, as the sun begins to set, and she realises that somewhere beneath all the background noise of traffic and people bustling around, she can hear footsteps keeping pace with her own.

There's no one on the street when she looks. She knows better than to reach for her gun here, where she can be seen. Walking into an isolated area on her own with something stalking her isn't the best choice to make either, but she's confident in her ability to defend herself. She can hear running water, and walks towards it. There's no snow in Los Angeles, but water is close enough. It's a connection to the natural world and its power will do, in a pinch.

She walks directly into the river, until she hears splashing footsteps behind her, and then turns, pulling her gun out and staring her stalker down.

It's an American woman, with bright pink glasses and a cheerful smile. "Hi. I'm Alexandra."

"I'm about to shoot you," Masako replies. She smells the air. "What are you? A werewolf?"

"Coyote," Alexandra corrects. "I'm also on the basketball team that will be playing against you tomorrow. I saw you at the kick-off party yesterday and thought that you didn't quite smell human either. Besides, you were so pretty I just had to say hi."

"I'm a Yuuki Onna," Masako replies. "I don't think you have them here, it's a—"

"A snow spirit," Alexandra finishes for her. She smiles. "That's pretty interesting. You still need a gun to defend yourself?"

"I don't know what I'm up against, over here," Masako replies. She doesn't think Alexandra will attack her, but she doesn't lower her gun. "And there's no snow."

"I guess that could be a problem," Alexandra allows. "Well, it looks like you got bored of hanging out with your human friends. How about making some nonhuman ones instead?"

Masako weighs up the possibility of this being a trap. Alexandra already knows that she has a gun. She probably doesn't know about the other weapons Masako is carrying with her, though, and that will give her an advantage if she needs it.

"Lead the way."

This kinda turned into an ensemble piece. Also Ooshiba wanted to take over, egotist that he is.

***

Ooshiba stared at Tsukushi’s hand as if he were holding a live grenade. Or possibly had all his fingers chopped. Or had his fingers chopped AND had a live grenade taped to his hand.

“What,” he said dramatically as he pointed at Tsukushi’s hand, “Is that?!”

“Huh?” Tsukushi looked down at the piece of paper, then held it up so that Ooshi and the others could see. “Oh, it’s just a track & field team flier.”

“You can’t hang it up here!” Ooshiba said. “You can’t recruit soccer team members for track & field! Kazama! Mizuki! Tell him that!”

“I’m not going to hang it up,” Tsukushi said defensively. “They saw me running around the school and wanted to recruit--”

The rest of his sentence was drowned out by a storm of protest. Kazama caught Tsukushi’s hands between his own and said earnestly, eyes glinting, “Tsukushi, I want you to do what’ll make you happy. But you said you want to run with us. We can’t all quit to go running instead.”

“That’s right, brat! You quit the team, who’s going to sub for me when we need to make the crowd hungry for my return?” Ooshiba demanded.

Kimishita scowled at him. “I gave you cleats to play with, not running shoes.”

Mizuki frowned too, leaning against the doorframe. “The team’s used to playing with you. It’s all swoosh whoosh when you’re here.”

There was silence for a second as everyone tried to figure out what exactly ‘swoosh whoosh’ meant and then the babbling broke out again as everyone tried to convince Tsukushi to stay.

“We’ll run with you in the mornings again--”
“You won’t like track and field, there’s no ball--”
“You can’t score goal either! It’s not a team sport-”
“There’s the relay, that’s sort of like a team--”
“Shut up, idiot! We want him to stay, not go do relay!”

“IT’S JUST ONE RACE,” Tsukushi shouted, having to raise his voice to be heard. Red in the face from the effort, he panted as everyone looked at him and then said at a more normal volume, “One of their middle distance runners can’t make it to the meet this weekend and they asked me if I could do the 800 meter dash because they think I’ve got the endurance for it.”

There was a general exhale of breath and Kazama suddenly hugged Tsukushi tightly.

“I’ll come cheer you on, Tsukushi,” he promised. He held Tsukushi just a few seconds too long for a private space, then let go so he could push a lock of hair behind ear and smile down at his boyfriend. “Just as long as you aren’t leaving.”

“I could never leave the team,” Tsukushi said earnestly and what he meant (what Kazama heard) was I could never leave you.

Whoever said that money doesn't buy happiness probably wasn't into fandom, Akashi muses as he follows Mayuzumi through the crowded convention hall. He doesn't entirely get the appeal of it himself, but he's here because he gifted Mayuzumi with two tickets to the convention, and he's enjoying the fact that Mayuzumi seems to come to life in these sorts of spaces, too excited and emotionally invested to pretend that he's anything else.

"This doujinka is really popular," Mayuzumi tells him, a little redundantly, as they join a winding line that spans the length of several booths. Akashi doesn't mind, because he barely sees Mayuzumi this talkative. It's an amazing deviation from the norm, and Akashi wonders how he can encourage it more often.

"Are you buying doujinshi about your Kaguya-tan?" Akashi asks, glancing sideways at Mayuzumi.

Mayuzumi raises an eyebrow. "My Kaguya-tan, huh?"

"I've seen your collection of merchandise," Akashi says mildly. "You do have a… dedicated interest."

"I find that very rich, coming from you, as a person," Mayuzumi mutters, but there's a smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah. This doujinka's favourite character is Kaguya-tan too. Her art style is amazing and her stories are usually pretty compelling. I'll let you read the copies I have of her doujin, if you promise to wear your gloves and don't breathe on them."

Akashi laughs softly. "I'll do my best."

The line is slow to move, and Akashi spends the time looking around at all the other booths that they're passing. There are artists selling their original art, fan art, and all kinds of merchandise. There's so much to look around at here, and Akashi suddenly realises why Mayuzumi spent all of last night coming up with a game plan for this weekend.

By the time they get to the front of the line, Mayuzumi has plotted an entire thirty thousand word fanfiction that he's taking notes down on his phone for, bouncing plot points off Akashi as they shuffle their way across the convention floor. He's about to come up with the climax when they reach the doujinka, and Akashi watches with amusement as all coherent thought immediately goes flying out of Mayuzumi's mind as he starts looking at what he wants to get.

Then Akashi looks at the table too.

All of the doujinshi that the artist is selling has Kaguya-tan paired with Ringo-tan.

"I'll pay," Akashi decides, pulling his wallet out. Mayuzumi blinks at him, but Akashi is handing the money over before he can protest, accepting the shopping bag full of merchandise with a smile. He waits until they walk away from the table, then looks over at Mayuzumi. "You didn't tell me that you paired our favourite characters together."

"The term is shipping," Mayuzumi corrects him. "And you didn't ask."
