Bonus Round 5: Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES

• Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
  • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
  • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
  • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.

“It’s not that hard.”

Tobio fumbles with the bandages as Oikawa’s voice cuts through the room, and he looks up, probably looking more shell-shocked than he would like to be. “Ah. Oikawa-san. I didn’t know you were awake.”

“I was going to go back to sleep, but you were messing with the bandages for so long, I got too bored to even nap.” It doesn’t make sense, but then again, not much of Oikawa’s petty ramblings do these days. He likes to lash out, Iwaizumi had told him seriously when he’d offered to help look after Oikawa. I hope you know what you’re signing up for.

Iwaizumi had just been looking out for Tobio. It isn’t his fault that he doesn’t know all the details. If he did, though, he’d know that Tobio knows far too well what he’s volunteering for.

He sets the bandages down for a moment to smooth back Oikawa’s hair. “Do you need painkillers? Are you feeling okay?”

“Don’t mother me, Tobio-chan.” Oikawa turns to look up at him, just so he can roll his eyes. “I’ll ask you for meds if I need them. Just wrap my knee back up, okay?”

“Right.” Tobio picks the bandages back up, starting to wind them around Oikawa’s knee, only to be met with a ferocious pout. “What is it?”

“Nothing,” Oikawa says, when it obviously must be something. No matter how inquisitively Tobio looks at him, he doesn’t speak up, instead just tugging at his bangs with a sulky expression.

Oh. Of course. Tobio scoots back up to bat his hand away and press a kiss to his forehead before returning to his job.

“Nnn, Tobio-chan, that was so short! You’re not taking care of me at all. I’m going to tell on you to Iwa-chan.”

Sometimes, Tobio thinks Oikawa enjoys the sound of his own voice a little too much. “You’ll tell Iwaizumi-san that you’re unhappy that I didn’t kiss you?” He does his best to keep his own voice level - it’s not often that he gets to tease Oikawa.

Sure enough, Oikawa stutters for a bit before grumbling beneath his breath, letting Tobio finally finish with his knee. “Does that feel good?” he asks, pressing the bandages down so they lay flat against the skin of his leg.

Oikawa tries moving his knee a little experimentally, then nods. “Yeah, that’s good.” Without preamble, he reaches for Tobio’s hand, knocking their knuckles together before pulling away. “Thanks for being here.”

“Thanks for letting me,” Tobio responds, just as quietly. Because despite the complaining and the squabbling and how much of a handful an injured Oikawa can be, Tobio would rather be here than anywhere else.

Hajime was dead. That was it. The only possible outcome. He was running on fumes after staying awake most of the night to finish his Engineering assignment, the one that was due by noon, and he'd forgotten to put it in his bag. It was already seventeen minutes past eleven. The chances of him getting to his apartment and then all the way back to university before twelve were slim to none.

Just as Hajime was sitting outside the classroom, contemplating his fate, his phone started to ring. He ignored it at first, letting it go to voicemail. Oikawa had a tendency to call him at awkward moments to complain about nothing in particular, and if Hajime had to listen to another pointless rant about Ushiwaka just now, he was going to end up flipping a table. But less than a minute later his phone started to ring again, buzzing angrily against his leg.

With a groan, Hajime pulled out his phone and answered it. "What?"

Daichi's voice laughed at him. "That sounds like the voice of a man who's forgotten his homework."

Hajime groaned. "I'm so dead--wait, how the hell did you know?"

Daichi laughed again, and Hajime realised that he sounded out of breath. "I found it on the kitchen table, I'm in your building."

Hajime's stomach flipped. "You brought it?"

"I brought it."

"Oh my god," Hajime said, sighing in relief. "Fuck, I'm gonna marry you."

"Tell me where you are first," Daichi said, sounding amused. "I'm in the foyer."

"Fifth floor," Hajime said, sinking back against the wall. "Fuck, thank you, I thought I was gonna fail."

"Sit tight, I'll be there in five."

Hajime nodded, dropping his phone into his lap. He felt weak with relief, and he laughed under his breath when Daichi came hurrying around the corner a few minutes later.

"Hey there," Daichi said, coming to a halt beside him. He was breathing heavily; he must have run all the way up the stairs. "Expecting a delivery?"

Hajime held out his hands, and Daichi hauled him to his feet. Without hesitating, Hajime wrapped his arms around Daichi and buried his face in his shoulder. "You're the best boyfriend in the entire world," he mumbled.

Daichi hugged him back, warm laughter ruffling his hair. "I couldn't just leave you to fail, could I?"

"I'm gonna make it up to you later," Hajime promised, pulling him closer. "I'll do anything you want."

"How about sleep?" Daichi asked, giving him a particularly punishing squeeze before releasing him. "Come on, let's hand in your assignment, then I'm taking you home for a nap."

Hajime gave him a loopy grin. "Best boyfriend," he insisted, taking Daichi's hand.

“Someone is gonna lose a hand,” Oikawa sing-songs with glee. He jabs Iwaizumi in the ribs just in case he wasn’t being clear enough.

“Guess you’ll have to jack me off from now on then,” Iwaizumi grunts as he presses his back into the rickety metal fence to avoid him; it pings cheerfully in the cool evening air like a titter between them. Oikawa’s fingertips are calloused and warm and they’re like twin points burning a hole right through his thin tshirt and into his skin. It feels almost like a lifetime and hundreds of kilometres since Iwaizumi has been sixteen, but in this sad little patch of grass and gravel behind Oikawa’s apartment complex in what passes for a lawn in Tokyo, with barely any of the white moonlight reaching them for all the street light spilling yellow and fluorescent over the concrete walls, Iwaizumi feels young all over again. He feels unsteady in everything except the way Oikawa is sitting so close and warm to him.

Oikawa scrunches up his nose. “Lewd, Iwa-chan. When did you become so gross? When did my pure innocent Iwa-chan become Pervy-chan.”

“You’re twenty years old. Don’t tell me you’ve never touched your own dick, Shittykawa.” The packet of matches have slipped to the bottom of his overnight bag, but with Oikawa poking him repeatedly with those long stupid annoying fingers of his, Iwaizumi is just about ready to fucking lose it. Are you even allowed to punch a sick person? Maybe today was the day Iwaizumi was finally going to find out.

“Wouldn’t you like to watch,” Oikawa leers, eyes narrow; like they haven’t spent countless training camps away together. Like this weekend wasn’t one of those things they don’t really talk about.

Oikawa’s voice is still stuffy from being sick, but his eyes aren’t bright with fever anymore, and if nothing else he looks perfectly comfortable pretzel-contorted onto the plastic lawn chair, long legs tucked under the three blankets that Iwaizumi had been careful not to let touch the dirt churned into mud from the evening rain. The skies had finally cleared tonight, but it had already been too late -- they had missed the meteor showers that had streaked brilliant and wondrous across the clear country skies in Miyagi, that Oikawa had been too sick to travel for. So here Iwaizumi had come instead, with his overnight bag and his single packet of matches and his too-young stupid idiot heartbeat pounding like thunder in his ears.

“Got ‘em,” Iwaizumi says instead, hand closing around the packet of matches that had fallen inside the pages of his physics notebook. “Enjoy your shitty stars, Shittykawa.”

A swipe against the strip. A flare in the dark. Fireworks.

Everything smells of sharp yellow sulfur and the deep green scent of earth after rain as he hands the lit sparkler to Oikawa, Oikawa who doesn’t even snipe at his lackluster insults; but what Iwaizumi will remember most on the train he takes back to Miyagi the next day is the way Oikawa had smelled of clean white soap and summer showers and something that no matter how far Iwaizumi has to travel, it will always be the smell of home.

“Light another one, Iwa-chan,” Oikawa commands, and his smile is so open and happy as he watches the sparkler burn down in his palm, Iwaizumi does exactly what he says without hesitation.

Kaidou stands in the courtyard, swings his blade once, twice. It still feels awkward in his grip somehow. After all, it only manifested itself to him barely a week ago. An it still hadn’t told him its name. It hadn’t even spoke to him, which was fine as far as Kaidou was concerned; he wasn’t a big conversationalist anyway. But, as he understood it, talking was apparently an essential part of the process.

Not far from him, he can hear the rhythmic scratching of pen on paper, long strokes that would come together in the most unreadable notes. Kaidou doesn’t pay it much mind, but the subtle sound adds to the background noise around him. He drinks in all of them, and tries to focus on the task at hand. He goes through the motions, the forms he had been taught for fighting with a zanpakuto, and just cycles through until the moves feel a little crisper.

There’s still no talking coming from his blade and he glares at it a little.

“You’re doing quite well,” Inui says, and Kaidou nearly jumps, having been so focused on his blade that he didn’t even hear his captain move. Kaidou looks, and Inui is looming over him, not smiling, but somehow almost “None of the others were even able to summon a sword.”

Somehow, Kaidou doesn’t find himself comforted, but he doesn’t say anything.

“It was once thought that a gikon summoning a zanpakuto was simply impossible. One of the things that science could never replicate about the human soul. But science is ever evolving. Nothing stays impossible forever. At least, science can find a way around most things, in any case.”

Inui keeps rambling, and Kaidou listens. That’s what he does, what he’s used to, what he’s comfortable with. He looks at his blade instead of making eye contact.

When Kaidou looks up, Inui is staring at him. For a moment, Kaidou wonders if he hadn’t been listening closely enough and maybe he missed something.

“Taichou?” Kaidou asks.

Inui shakes his head. “I just don’t want you to worry about it. You’re a fine fighter regardless.”

Kaidou frowns. Inui seems to have said all he intended to say, and turns, ending the conversation.

“Do you even think it’s possible?” Kaidou asks, before he can stop himself.

Inui turns. “What do you mean?”

“I’m…” Kaidou stops, reconsiders, and sighs. “I’m artificial… so, what if that means my zanpakuto will never speak to me.”

“Your fault,” says Hara. “You got too close to my bubble.”

“You’re the one who blew it,” says Furuhashi.

(Like Furuhashi didn’t know it was coming; Hara had been opening his mouth to blow it and all of a sudden Furuhashi had descended, like he’d been trying to get the sensation of kissing Hara with the bubble between them—or suffocate Hara with bubble gum, which, please, he’s going to have to try harder than that.)

“Maybe your hair’s greasy enough to for it to come out,” says Hara, pulling at the bubble gum, which of course does not budge from Furuhashi’s hair.

“I wash my hair every other day,” says Furuhashi, and of all his blatant lies this might be one of the more egregious.

“Doesn’t, like, peanut butter help?" Hara says, and Furuhashi shrugs (where the hell is Yamazaki when you need him).

It had only gotten into a square of Furuhashi’s bangs, kind of amazing that it hadn’t gotten anywhere else, but they’re not going to be able to go anywhere with Furuhashi’s hair like this (if Hara lends him a hat it’ll likely get covered in gum, which, ew; gum is gross when it’s not in your mouth).

Hara unwraps another piece and adds it to what he’s already got; Furuhashi had taken a god chunk with him and if Hara wasn’t already annoyed about Furuhashi’s hair he’d be annoyed because of that (gum’s expensive; Hara can afford it but it’s the principle of the thing).

“We’re going to have to cut it out,” says Hara, patting Furuhashi’s shoulder. “It’ll be fine.”

Furuhashi looks alarmed, but come on. Does Hara look that bad? He cuts his bangs long; it’s not like he’s going to shave Furuhashi’s head (Furuhashi’s still his boyfriend and Hara’s going to have to look at him; he’s not going to want to change too much at once—though they should see if they can cut Hanamiya’s hair in his sleep; that would be funny as fuck; Hara files it away for the next time they have a team road trip). There’s a pair of nail scissors in his bag, he surveys Furuhashi critically.

“Stand still.”

Furuhashi miraculously obeys, and Hara snips off the gum-covered hair. So Furuhashi has half a set of bangs now, and it does look kind of weird. Hara snickers.

“You look cute.”

(He does, even if he also looks stupid—but it’s Furuhashi, so.)

Hara leans in to kiss him, and this time he keeps his gum securely in one cheek.
