Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

Just a little creepy mundane magic!

***

The necklace sings in his hands the way that shells sing against the ear.

Haru knows the truth of the shells, of course; they don’t hold the music of the sea, the sound of the waves. They only magnify the sound of your own blood rushing through you.

The necklace is different. When Haru holds it, he hears the slow, soft swell of water currents, of underwater waves, the bubble of air from fissures and the stirring of water by a fish’s tail.

He holds it in his hands but he hears the music in his head.

That is how he knows the shark teeth are real.

Plastic never sings to him. Neither does china.

These teeth, these chunky blocks of off-white, once belonged to a shark who swam deep under the ocean.

What Haru hears is the music of the shark’s life.

*

“Here,” Haru says and proffers the necklace to Rin as shyly as a man with an engagement ring. “I got this for you. It’s shark’s teeth.”

“Thank, Haru!” Rin’s face lights up and he grins at Haru with his own sharp teeth as he drops the necklace over his head carefully. He tugs the shark tooth pendant to rest over the center of his chest and then tilts his head to a side as if listening to something.

Haru waits, hands in his pockets and his body a long line of indifference. He doesn’t know anyone else who can hear the ocean like he can.

Sometimes he looks at photos of elephants and wonders if in Africa or India or Bangladesh, there are people who can hear the earth through ivory, who touch old pianos and hear a symphony different to the one their fingers play.

Surely he can’t be alone in this.

Surely, if anyone can hear the ocean too, it’ll be Rin.

*

At first, it’s nothing but subtle scrapes on the tooth. Haru only notices because he’s looking so hard for any change in Rin.

Rin’s wearing long sleeves all the time now, high-necked jackets, but he always wears the shark’s tooth necklace on the outside which is why Haru sees that it’s starting to be scarred.

He thinks it’s just the wear and tear of daily wear until he catches Rin sucking on it, tooth in his mouth and his jaw working tirelessly.

Rin yanks it out the moment he sees Haru, eyes wide and guilty.

“When you bite it,” Haru asks slowly, feeling his way around the question. “Do you hear anything?”

“No,” Rin says, and his eyes are flat and dead, “But I taste blood.”

Babies!

***

The dragon egg has been glowing steadily for hours now. The hens that were assigned to sit on it have been moved off and instead, the court wizard has cast a spell on the cushioned basket the egg is in to keep it warm.

All court business is conducted with half an eye on the egg and courtiers who haven’t been in the Throne Room for years are now crowded into the upper gallery.

Nobody wants to miss the sight of a dragon egg hatching.

When the first tap-tap-tap sounds, the court instantly falls silent. The petitioner that had been pleading to the Grand King gets a distracted, “Yes, yes, you are now dismissed,” and scurries off to tell his village the good news that the soldiers will help them relocate away from the floods.

The Grand King has the basket brought to the foot of the throne so that he may watch and takes his son onto his lap so he too will witness the birth of a dragon. The heir is barely a year old, a chubby little brown-haired baby whose smiles and giggles have enchanted the court, but even he seems to be aware of the magic of the moment. His big brown eyes fix on the egg with intensity rare in one so young and as the egg hatches, he makes no noise.

Slowly, the eggshell breaks away and a tiny head, no bigger than a cherry, pokes it way out. It looks just like a little lizard at first until the small, wet wings on the back unfold.

As one, the court exhales.

The dragon’s eyes open, gleaming like liquid gold, and catch the prince’s gaze. The toddler suddenly wriggles on his father’s lap as the dragon spreads out its wings and then hops-skims into the air.

There’s instant panic, the wizard throwing a fire-proofing spell over both the Grand King and his heir, the queen scrambling away, the guards readying their spears - but all the little dragon does is land on one of Oikawa’s fat thighs and make a little chirping sound. It’s as golden as unripe wheat with two black stripes racing down its sides and its underbelly is a soft pink.

Oikawa gurgles in delight and tries to pat the dragon with one chubby little hand.

Then there are two babies on the king’s lap. One is completely naked with blond hair, striped black over the sides, and speckled golden scales like freckles over his cheeks and sides.

Oikawa’s gurgling sounds even more delighted and when he throws his plump arms around the dragon-baby and hugs it, the dragon-baby chirps in return and nuzzles him.

This isn’t what the Grand King had in mind for the dragon but a dragon for a playmate and protector isn’t the worst gift to give his son.

Asahi pushed open the door to the clubroom and froze.

There, in the middle of the clubroom, standing on top of a teetering, unsteady pile of boxes, chairs - was that a volleyball net? That was definitely a volleyball net! - and backpacks was Hinata.

He had to move carefully. He couldn’t shock Hinata, else he might lose his balance and fall. Somehow, he had to get close enough to Hinata to catch him without being spotted (which would be easier if he weren’t actually about the same height as the little mountain that Hinata had built).

Stepping out of his sneakers, Asahi silently padded towards the unsuspecting Hinata who was swaying back and forth as he did his best to maintain his balance. When he judged he was close enough, Asahi said as calmly as he could, “Hinata, can I help you down from there?”

Hinata made the mistake of trying to twist around to smile down at Asahi.

“Hi, A--AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” His foot slipped and Hinata pitched backwards off the tower right into Asahi’s waiting arms.

Unfortunately, when he fell, the tower collapsed as well.

Asahi found himself under attack from a barrage of odds and ends; like any good boyfriend, he hit the ground with Hinata under him, protecting Hinata from the dreadful rain of objects (which didn’t actually hurt all that much but he was still a most heroic meat shield).

Once the items stopped crashing down on him, Asahi carefully pulled away from Hinata and looked at him worriedly.

“I didn’t crush you, did I?” He asked as he held out a hand to help Hinata up. Hinata’s eyes were shining and he jumped to his feet, then threw his arms around Asahi’s middle in a tight hug.

“That was so cool! You were just like whooosh and came and saved me like BANG!” He gestured excitedly with his hands, beaming up at Asahi adoringly all the while.

Asahi could feel himself blushing. “What were you even doing up there?”

“Oh…” Hinata’s smile dimmed as he produced a miraculously unbroken lightbulb and held it up to Asahi. “Trying to put this bulb in. We’re supposed to be switching to these because it’s better for the environment.”

Asahi took the bulb from Hinata, unscrewed the current one, replaced it with the new one and then handed the old bulb to Hinata wordlessly.

Hinata clasped his hands together and grinned up at Asahi merrily.”SO COOL.”

Never had a man blushed so much just because he’d changed a lightbulb.

Temporary char death, mythology.

***

Winter won’t come while Summer lives so Kiyoko, herald of winter and wearer of the white, dons the ceremonial robes.

The robes are made of white wool, drenched in snow, frozen in ice after each wearing. To free them from their prison, she must take an ice axe to them and chip away at the block they are enclosed in.

Her arms ache by the time the robes are free but her task is not yet complete. Now she must dry them and set them them before the fire to steam, watching all the while that the smoke does not taint the purity of the white wool with any smudge of grey.

She fastens it over her bare skin with bone buttons and glides out from the palace to summer’s domain.

On her way, she passes Fall, the flame-haired boy with earth-brown eyes who leaps and dances with the leaves and wind, then slowly grows tired as he too gives way to Winter.

But it will be Spring’s job to tell Fall to sleep, just as it is Summer’s to tell Winter to give way to Spring.

Winter must bring the news to Summer now, so all Fall gets from her is a small respectful nod as she passes into Summer’s territory.

Where her foot falls, the grass withers and ice sheens the flowers so they look like colored glass. A cold wind blows in her wake but her hair does not move with it.

Yachi, lively and lissome, is up a tree, perched like a bird and chattering to a crow.

Kiyoko comes to a stop before the tree and holds out a perfect winter apple. It is pure white with the hint of a blush under its skin, large and luscious.

“It is time,” Kiyoko says quietly and Yachi’s smile fades. She drops down from the tree, legs bare and toes stained green from the grass, and takes the apple in two hands.

“It was a good summer,” Yachi says the way she always does. She turns the apple around in her hands, thumb stroking the hard curves. “Fruitful. Happy. Warm.”

“Yes,” Kiyoko agrees, drinking in the sight of summer sunshine spun into hair. “And next summer will be even better.”

“It will, won’t it?” Yachi’s smile flashes out, bright and beautiful. She’s still smiling as she bites into the apple and swallows, as her legs give way and her eyes close.

Kiyoko leaves the apple where it has fallen and picks Yachi up instead. In Kiyoko’s arms, Yachi is carried back to her bower of flowers and grass, laid to rest sweetly amidst blossoms and endless sunshine.

She’ll be back when it’s time for Winter to end and she will come carrying summer wine.

More mythology-fantasy! Warnings for mention of menstruation and corresponding rites of womanhood, if that stuff icks you out.

***

Her grandmother smells of wet dirt and metal; her grandmother smells of death.

Her grandmother’s fingers are cold and her nails keep scratching at Yachi’s skin as she knots the red cape in place.

Yachi’s fourteen only but she’s had her first moonblood. It’s time for her to be sent out into the world to become a woman now.

Each girl must make her own cape before her time of blood ends and walk into the forest.

If she doesn’t finish it on time, she will be sent into the forest without the protection of the cape, prey to any wandering deity or monster (or human).

Everyone knows the girls in red capes are not to be touched, ever since the first girl cut her way out of a wolf god’s stomach and freed her grandmother as well.

Everyone knows a girl can wear a red cape only once in her life.

(Afterwards, they’re burnt, and from the ashes are made prayer-ink.)

The cape is long enough to cloak her from shoulder to knee, as long as she keeps her arms together inside it. She has made loops of cord and French knot buttons to hold it closed over her breasts but her bare stomach and legs shine like moonlight.

No shoes are allowed; she steps barefoot off her grandmother’s doorstep and into the waiting night. Twigs jab at her feet, stones bite and the grass caresses her ankles as she walks, step by step, to meet her future.

Which god will choose her? To whom will she dedicate her life?

There is a figure standing on the end of the path, glowing white and devouring black, and Yachi’s steps slow but she does not stop.

Closer, she can see the figure is the most beautiful woman possible, a creature made of dreams and collective fantasy. Her skin holds an inner light and her eyes are the deep grey of the darkest shadows.

Yachi stares for a stupefied second before her gaze falls on the sparkling pendant that rests against the lady’s dark garb. It is a crescent, a half-circle, a circle and nothingness, waxing and waning as she watches.

“Moon Lady,” she says, almost stammering as she throws herself onto her knees. She bends her head, cape falling about her like a skinned trophy, and says to the ground. “I offer my life to you.”

There is no dividing line between the Lady’s dress and the shadows of the gown, Yachi realizes when the Lady comes closer. She keeps her gaze on the ground, terrified to look up, and stares at her own hands gripping the grass as if she might float away into the sky otherwise.

Something touches the top of her head and Yachi’s skin begins to glow.

Liminal spaces, violence, blood, magic!

***

Ever since the days of Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest has been sacred ground. It is the testing place of heroes; it is the questing grounds of heroines.

All grudges must be laid aside before entering the forest. All electronics, plastic and iron too. Humans are not the only ones to walk this world and some places are sacred to more than just humans.

Yachi has prepared for her quest carefully. She stitched her clothes herself and packed spares. Biodegradable wet wipes, specially formulated to dissolve into earth, are tucked into one pocket of her bag along with a container of charcoal powder toothpaste. There is no metal in her clothing or her accessories. Even her jewelry has been removed.

She walks into the forest with a bow made of aged ash and arrows that are sharpened oak on one end and goose feather on the other.

Yachi’s not expecting to hunt. There’s food and drink in her backpack, dried jerky and oranges and waterskins. She has to have a weapon, though. The Forest rules say that she must not enter unarmed.

She steps into the Forest and pauses. The sky above is clear and blue but behind her, it had been grey and cloudy. When she looks up, when she looks back, she can see where the two climates meet and clash, grey and blue delineated as clearly as two paint chip cards stacked edge-to-edge.

Sometimes it’s winter in the Forest when it’s summer in the world. Yachi’s lucky to have not arrived in a land of snow.

She settles the bag’s straps more firmly over her shoulders and heads deep into the heart of the forest.

*

The stag is white as bleached paper, white as milk, but its horns drip blood onto the grass and its teeth are shark’s teeth, triangular and too sharp for a prey animal. The queen atop the stag is as still as death, seated side-saddle with one hand on the stag’s head and lips so pale that they seem bloodless.

Her crown is bones, her jewelry is teeth and she’s smiling at Yachi who cannot even think of running away.

“Kneel,” the queen says and Yachi’s knees buckle before this beauty.

She stays there, frozen, as the queen descends from her stag and reaches out to caress Yachi’s cheek. The cold of her fingers bite into Yachi’s skin but she is smitten. There can be no sweeter way to die than--

An arrow thunks into the queen’s chest and black blood spurts over Yachi. A dark-haired girl bursts from the bushes, grabs Yachi’s hand and commands, “Run!”

Spell broken, Yachi and her rescuer bolt.

Fantasy AU, slightly creepy.

***

Iwaizumi has never seen so much gold in his entire life. In fact, he’s never seen so much of anything in his life. Even after the best harvests, his village has never had mountains of grain the way that the cave is filled with mountains of gold.

If he’s unwary and takes the wrong thing, he could trigger an avalanche of gold that would break his bones and then bury him. He has to be smart about it. He has to choose high-value items that he can sell and transport easily. The gold coins are tempting but if he sells the right item, he can get more gold coins than it weighs, so there’s no point taking the coins.

Gems? Should he go for the jewelry that has the most gems studding it? Diamonds are worth a lot, Iwaizumi knows, so a handful of diamonds would surely result in a sack of gold coins. And that’s if he takes them out of their setting! If he keeps them in their setting, some noble might pay a fortune for a pretty necklace or bracelet.

There’s a bracelet that’s four lines of diamonds, huge and glittery. It clasps around his wrist easily but is so heavy that Iwaizumi immediately chucks it into his bag instead. The weight is proof the diamonds are real - not that Iwaizumi expects to find any fakes in a dragon’s hoard! Dragons wouldn’t go for costume jewelry.

He makes his way deeper into the cake, picking and selecting critically as he works. When he finds a crown studded with rubies, he pauses for a second to try it on, wishing for a mirror.

“It looks good on you,” a voice says and makes Iwaizumi jump before he registers that it’s a human voice.

He turns towards the mouth of the cave and there’s the young man he met in a tavern last night who told him about the hoard and how the dragon was away. He wouldn’t have believed the young man if he hadn’t flashed an emerald-encrusted brooch and said he took it from the cave; anyone dressed in such rags couldn’t have a brooch like that without stealing it from somewhere.

“Come back for more?” Iwaizumi asks casually. There’s more than enough for two of them, there’s no need to be unfriendly. He wouldn’t be be so rude to someone who had told him where the treasure was, after all.

“Yes,” the boy says with a smile. “Another piece for my hoard.”

The wording’s ironic enough to make Iwaizumi laugh; his laughter dies out when the boy shivers and seems to ripple, stretching oddly.

A second later, the entrance is blocked by a giant dragon, deep brown with a pale underbelly and the boy’s same brown eyes.

[The moment I saw you, I knew I had to have you for my hoard,] the dragon rumbles into Iwaizumi’s mind. [My precious Iwa-chan.]

It’s very difficult to get people to join the volleyball team.

***

“Join the volleyball club,” Kageyama ordered as he thrust flyers at any unfortunate soul who came within reach. He’d found a spot in the shade and was now waylaying passer-bys with a certain grim determination.

Was talking to strangers something he enjoyed? No. Was it a duty he would carry out because it had been given to him by the captain? Yes.

“Join the volleyball club,” he said to another person and pushed a flyer at them. This time, he remembered to add, “Please.”

Despite the flyers he’d handed out, he had very little hope for anyone actually joining. They were taking the flyers out of habit, most people stuffing the carefully folded papers into their pockets without even looking at them.

What a waste of Yachi’s hard work! She’d created a beautiful flyer for them, photos and texts perfectly balanced, and even negotiated a discount with the print shop because it was for a school. All that effort for flyers that nobody was even looking at.

“Join the volleyball club, please,” he said and smacked a flyer into someone’s hands without looking.

“Bakageyama! I’m already in the volleyball club with you!” Hinata yelled loudly. He rolled up the flyer and smacked Kageyama on the arm with it, peering up at him curiously.

“Aren’t you even looking whom you’re giving these too?!” Hinata demanded.

Kageyama thought about informing Hinata that actually, the cafeteria lunch lady he’d given a flyer to had seemed more interested than any of the actual students, and then decided against it. Hinata might actually try convincing her to enroll without thinking about the fact that their team was men’s only.

“Either help me or shut up,” he said, pushing the stack of flyers at Hinata. “You take three quarters, I’ll take the last quarter.

“Why don’t we take half each?” Hinata asked with a puzzled tilt of his head.

“Because I’ve already been giving them out for a while. If we take half each, then I’ll be doing more work than you,” Kageyama explained, conveniently ignoring the fact that since he’d been ordered to do it, he really should be doing all the work.

“...Okay!” Hinata said, grabbing the majority of the flyers. He scampered off to the other side of the gates and soon Kageyama could hear him yelling.

“HEY! HEY YOU! DO YOU LIKE WINNING? DO YOU LIKE CROWS? DO YOU LIKE JUMPING AROUND?” Hinata was gathering an interested crowd, gesturing with his stack of flyers self-importantly. “JOIN OUR VOLLEYBALL CLUB.”

And just like that, the crowd dispersed.

Uh. Crack, attempted murder and also I’ve never actually eaten truffles in my life.

***

Truffle season is the best. Just the thought of the rich, aromatic fungus makes Ushijima’s mouth water.

Of course, truffles are too much of a delicacy to be wasted on the likes of him usually. With what they sell for in the market, Ushijima knows that he should be sending them all to his exporter and then buying himself other tasty delicacies with the money he makes from his truffle forest. One truffle or a large wheel of cheese? It shouldn’t be a contest at all and indeed, those in thrall to truffles will choose the truffles without even hesitating.

Financial necessity compels Ushijima to sell most of his truffles but he always leaves one or two for himself. The very first one he finds and the very last are both for him.

His truffle pig, on the other hand, gets cheese. No use wasting truffles on the sow!

Now, as she snuffles at the ground and paws at it with her front legs, Ushijima feels the familiar thrill of the hunt rise through him. Grabbing his shovel, he starts digging away carefully so he won’t damage the truffle through his enthusiasm.

His shovel hits glass and thinking it’s just a bottle some trespasser buried, Ushijima keeps going. The glass surface is quite big, actually, and Ushijima ponders breaking it. There’s a truffle somewhere down there, under the glass.

One quick stab with the shovel has the glass shattering and Ushijima raises the shovel to continue when a voice crying out, “Help me!” makes him stop.

He pauses and leans down to the hole. There’s now a boy’s head sticking out of it. He’s got rich brown hair, like fertile loam, and big brown eyes.

“How’d you get down there?” Ushijima asks and then adds a little more aggressively, “This is private property. You’re trespassing.”

Is it possible the boy was tunneling into his land to steal his truffles?

“My wicked stepmother cursed me to sleep until I was woken by a handsome prince,” the boy explains, fluttering his eyelashes. “She was jealous of how beautiful I am. But when I died, they must have buried me in a glass coffin so that everyone could admire me.”

“Sounds foolish,” Ushijima says frankly. “Why bury you if you were just sleeping?”

“They didn’t know I was just sleeping. They must’ve thought I was dead,” the boy says, now sounding a little putout.

“Then they’re really foolish if they can’t tell a live person from a dead one.” Ushijima hefts his shovel and looks down at the boy whose mouth is now screwed up in a pout.

“You’re not a very mannerly handsome prince, are you?” He asks. It’s the condescending tone of voice that makes up Ushijima’s mind.

“Nope,” he says, starting to shovel dirt down on the boy, “Better go back to sleep and wait for a politer one.”

“Wha- hey - no, STOP! The spell’s broken! If you bury me again, I’ll die!”

Ushjima drives the shovel into the dirt and sighs. “I’m known as the Prince of Truffles because my forest yields more of them than any other place. If I dig you up, can you help me find truffles or are you just going to sit around being beautiful and talking about it?”

“I’m the best at finding truffles. I’m ace at it,” the boy promised earnestly (and more than a little desperately).

“...Fine.” Ushijima returned to digging while Oikawa breathed a sigh of relief.

He was free!

...Now he just had to find out what truffles were before that brute tried to bury him again!
