SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).


This round is made for exploration of all those "what-if?" scenarios, like "what if my favorite sports anime was actually a spaghetti western?" or "what if everything was the same except everyone was actually a car?"


This round ends at 7PM on June 27 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES

• Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms.
• An AU could be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [team] didn't win the Inter High in season 1, but [other team] did instead?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g.s pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
• Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
• Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Kuroo worked late. Every day. Except on days off, of course. That meant he had to eat late, too. He'd picked McDonald's because he wanted a big mac right then. He plopped down in a booth and started to eat because it wasn't like he had to rush back home or anything. He looked around and took in his surroundings, sighing at the lack of people. In the corner of the restaurant, though, there was a guy with his face smashed against the table trying to eat his burger like he was a frog or a lizard of some sort. Needless to say, his all-tongue approach wasn't working very well.

Kuroo leaned back in his seat and kicked his feet up to rest on the booth opposite of himself. He shook his head and buckled in for the show. The next half hour of his slow meal he watched the guy fall out of the booth, spill his drink a total of three times, and even drop a pickle down his shirt. Eventually he tossed his wrappers in the trash and strutted over to plop down across from the guy. "Need some help?"

The stranger glared up at him huffed softly. "No, I'm doing just fine on my own, thank you very much!" He proceeded to drop his fries all over his burger.

"Obviously." He snickered to himself. "You've been at this for half an hour and barely even managed to eat half of your meal. If you let me help you, I'll buy you a sundae to celebrate."

The stranger looked up at him, eyes sparkling. "Hot fudge?"

Kuroo nodded and grinned as he picked up the burger and held it to the stranger's mouth. "Yup." He only decided to help out because the guy looked absolutely pitiful... And maybe kind of cute. The way he bit in and munched cheerily was definitely adorable. "So what's your name?"

"Oikawa Tooru. I'm kind of famous, you know? I'm a model." He winked at Kuroo who just shook his head and laughed.

"Well that's nice. I'm Kuroo Tetsurou. I'm an overnight delivery guy. We can't all have flashy jobs." It was just something to tide him over until he found a job he was really interested in.

Oikawa smirked at him as he devoured the rest of the burger quickly. "Well right now you're sort cool, helping me out like this and all."

Kuroo laughed and shrugged. "Maybe I should put the sundae on your tab since you're so rich."

"Well that's just not romantic at all. In fact, it's really rude, Kurocchi!"

Kuroo burst out laughing and stuffed some fries into the other's mouth. "You're a little brat, aren't you? You definitely don't deserve any ice cream."

They continued back and forth as Oikawa ate, continuing even as they shared the sundae. Eventually they had to go home, though. Oikawa felt himself up then whined as he leaned into Kuroo. "I lost my keys, take me home with you."

Kuroo grinned and wrapped an arm around the brunette. "Alright, but don't blame me if I wind up seducing you," he teased with a smirk.

Kageyama didn't like children's books okay, he just... Some of the stories were really cute, and they had good morals, and adult books put him to sleep, okay? Kids books were nicer. He looked both ways before carefully sliding into the aisle and looking over the selection. Maybe another Junie B. Jones? Those were always fun. He really related to her on an emotional level. He stopped mid thought when someone else joined him in the aisle, quickly whipping his head to look in their direction. It was. A girl. A small, cute, blonde drop of sunshine. He froze and stared at her.

She froze and stared back. They were both caught with their hand in the proverbial cookie jar. He clutched the book he was holding and tried to calm his blush. "Uh. Are you... Here for the..." He gestured to the selection in front of him, "Too?"

The girl nodded and quickly dashed around him to grab a book covered in stars. "Um. I like this series..." She looked up at him shyly and smiled. "But Junie B. Jones is good, too."

Kageyama laughed nervously and nodded. "Yeah that one's... Really nice." He cleared his throat and held out his hand. "Kageyama Tobio."

The girl stared at the hand for what seemed like hours before jerkily reaching out and shaking his hand with vigor. "Yachi Hitoka." Then she pulled her hand back and looked up at him. "It's nice to meet you, Kageyama-san."

"Um. K-Kun is fine... Or just no honorific..." He bit his lip and looked down at her. "This book store has a cafe sort of area, but... There's one down the street with these cute little animal cookies."

Yachi's face lit up with excitement. "We should go there! Right now! Oh wait, no we need to buy these, first. But! It'll be like... A reading date! Hehe. That sounds like so much fun, Kageyama-kun."

The boy nodded and ducked his head. "Yeah." He turned back to the books and cleared his throat. "I guess... It's already stared, Hitoka-chan?"

She shrank down and giggled shyly, blushing to the tips of her ears. “Y-Yeah! I guess so. Hehe. It's kind of exciting, meeting someone with something like this in common... And then just going on a spontaneous date! Hah. Wow. Oh! We should exchange emails! Or... Numbers? Do you text or...?”

Kageyama tilted his head. “I don't have a phone.”

Yachi deflated immediately. She was going to have a long day ahead of her.

Daichi grins in triumph. This is it. He’s finally going to win one.

Daichi’s troop of campers is great. He's not sure if there was some sort of sorting method that went into splitting up the campers into different groups, but if there was then somehow he got the group that was just like him. Willing to get in the mud and get dirty. Willing to take on the next challenge with everything they have in them. Meanwhile…

Daichi glances over at Sugawara. Suga’s troop is just like them too. All of their kids are calm, calculating little geniuses that crack every puzzle and see through every challenge. Daichi tries not to outwardly glare at Sugawara, but it’s hard not too. In Daichi’s mind, Suga’s troop is most definitely his troop’s rival.

And his troop is going to win, damn it.

Suga’s troop beat them out in the scavenger hunt, but only because they were faster at solving the clues. They also beat them at archery and the navigation challenge. But Daichi’s team won the tug of war, the rock climbing, and the swimming race. They’re tied (even though no one but Daichi is keeping score).

But this time. This time the challenge is something Daichi wouldn’t lose in a million years: volleyball.

“Good luck, Daichi,” Suga says, smiling widely at him. “I hope you’ve trained your troop well.”

Daichi tries to be nonchalant. “Well, it’s not like any of the kids are specifically here for volleyball or anything. But I think I did okay since I know a thing or two about the sport.”

“I know what you mean,” Sugawara says. “I would be ashamed at the level of practice my team is at if it were for a real volleyball competition, but this is just for fun anyway.”

Real volleyball competition. Daichi’s eyes widen at that. “You… you play volleyball?”

Daichi is sure Suga would deny it, but he swears that Suga’s smile turns villainous at that. “As a matter of fact, I do.”

Daichi pouts over sorting arts and crafts supplies into the right box. His troop did good – really good – but it still wasn’t enough. He didn’t tell his troop that of course. And he doesn’t blame them, naturally. As far as he’s concerned this is just between him and…

“Better luck next time,” Suga says, plopping a box down next to his and grabbing at the supplies.

Daichi can’t hold back a bit of a glare this time. “Next time?”

“Of course,” Suga says. “I have to say, I’m actually quite enjoying this rivalry. My troop wins something, your troop wins something. Adds a bit of spice to the summer, doesn’t it?”

Daichi blinks. “So, I wasn’t just imagining it then? You are competing with me.”

“Well, I haven’t told my troop that or put any pressure on them, of course,” Suga says. “But yes.”

Daichi grins and leans closer to them. “Then bring it on! Next up is horseshoes. Hope your team has good aim.”

Suga grins, and closes the small gap between them to plant a kiss on Daichi’s cheek. Daichi freezes and goes red.

“Also, you’re cute when you’re being competitive,” Suga says. “I can’t wait until horseshoes then.”

Daichi finds himself frozen in place as Suga walks out of the door. “Wait, what just happened here?”

“Here.” A stack of papers lands on Kuroko’s desk, a familiar shadow looming over him. “They’re yours.”

“Thank you.” Kuroko collects the papers together, eyes skimming over the red marks and comments left by his teachers’ pencils. Fairly decent, although Midorima-kun would surely have to say something about his study habits.

“Your rainbow friends said you were still in your classroom.” As a third year, Kuroo Tetsurou should be a strange, rare sight in a first year’s classroom--but the mix-ups have become such a usual occurrence that nobody seems to remark on it. “It’s lunch, you know.”

“I know.” Kuroko rifles through the contents of his own desk before pulling out a similar sheaf of papers. “Here are yours.”

Kuroo-senpai doesn’t even remark on his tone. He’s a strange person--but Kuroko’s been told that he’s fairly strange himself, by the people who could see him--and takes to the fact that their names are similar like it’s just a massive joke. Kuroko lifts his eyes off his last graded paper and stares straight up at his face and sly smile. “Isn’t it lunch for you, too? Senpai.”

“Jeez,” he laughs, running a hand through wild hair. “Are you telling me to mind my own business?””

“No.” Kuroko puts the papers in his bag, fishing out his wallet for lunch. “I would never tell an upperclassman to pick on someone his own size.” Kuroo-senpai tags along as he leaves the classroom, mindful of the desks and chairs in their way. The peaks of his hair probably brush the top of the doorway--it’s like walking with Murasakibara somehow, albeit a louder, chattier one.

“You’re cold!” His laughter is loud, but bright, like Kise’s. “... You remind me of someone, actually.” Kuroo-senpai, despite his long legs, keeps an easy pace with Kuroko. “D’you know a second year? Kozume?”

“No.” Unseen, Kuroko cuts his way through a dozen people’s conversations before reaching the canteen. He can still see little packets of bread. “At least, I don’t think so.”

“Oh. Well, he’s kind of like you.” Kuroo-senpai watches Kuroko fish his way through to the bread counter, pay for his meal, and come back--totally unremarked upon. “Not entirely like you,” he amends. “But you’re both short.”

Kuroko looks at him before pocketing his lunch. “I imagine a lot of people are short to you, senpai.” He’d like to see him say that to Akashi-kun, actually. He’s never seen someone as confident as Kuroo-senpai on the receiving side of his ankle break.

“Terrible,” he laughs again, but he doesn’t seem angry at all. He’s noisy, even when walking Kuroko back to the first-years’ wing of the school. “Your friends are in 1-5,” he adds, gently guiding Kuroko by the shoulders to the door. “They’re waiting for you!”

Speechless, Kuroko watches as Kuroo-senpai knocks on the door frame, popping in his head to say, “Delivery!” He smiles, and Kuroko cannot run when Kise notices him. “See ya later, kid!”

When he turns to leave, Momoi drags him to their little cluster of desks. He’ll see Kuroo-senpai again.

I reckon Shinkai would be the one in most pain but he'd cover it up really well, trying to keep everyone together. His seemingly-relaxed attitude pisses Arakita off which annoys Toudou so the latter two fight a lot. Interpret the way you want but let there be drama and pain

The project is uncomfortable by nature and by design, but it's made doubly so because they are dating, though of course their homeroom teacher doesn't know that. It's a coincidence. There are more boys in the class than girls, and both of them are horrible at drawing lots. These facts didn't make anything less awkward.

"Let's name him FLAME MASTER!" Naruko suggests energetically, in horrible English, while cradling their five-pound flour sack in his arms.

"Why do we have to name it at all?" Imaizumi grumbles into his hand. "And why is it a boy?"

"Ohhh, did you want a little girl, Hotshot?" Naruko grins and puckers his lips mockingly. "That's so sweet! Do you want someone to dress up cutely and have tea parties with?"

Imaizumi rolls his eyes. "A boy can dress up and have tea parties too, you know."

"Very true, very true, Hotshot. That's very progressive of you!" The redhead's toothy grin doesn't cease. "But you do want a girl, don't you, huh? Why's that? Do you think a girl would be easier to take care of?"

"No, I think they'd all be equally annoying..." Imaizumi shrugs. "We're not naming it 'Flame Master' though."

"What would you name it then?? Something boring and lame, I bet! FLAME MASTER is a flashy and strong name!"

"It's not even a real name."

"Go on then! Pick a better name!"

"Sakamichi," Imaizumi blurts. It's the first name he can think of.

Naruko stares blankly at him, then bursts out laughing. "You want to name our baby after Onoda!?"

Imaizumi can't keep himself from blushing and Naruko claps him a few times hard on the back. "You tryin' to tell me somethin', Hotshot?" he asks, still cackling.

"Maybe the flour sack will grow up to be a climber too," Imaizumi mutters. "Then it can drop itself off a cliff."

"Now, now, I~ma~i~zumi-kun, don't talk badly about our baby Sakamichi! I bet he'll grow up big and strong just like Onoda-kun!"

"I wouldn't necessarily use those words to describe Onoda," Imaizumi deadpans.

"Pffff, okay, okay! Well, we can still hope it's a good climber, right??"

"Oi, be careful, Hotshot!" Naruko catches the falling flour sack deftly, then shifts it into his other arm as he continues to pedal. "You want to kill our baby?! He'll get torn to shreds if he falls!"

Imaizumi rolls his eyes and sighs. "Why did we have to bring it along again?"

"Weren't you paying attention to the rules? Or to life?! You can't leave a baby unattended! Everyone is riding today so no one's available to watch baby Sakamichi in the clubroom."

"I think in life, a person would sit out of practice rather than take their baby on a bicycle climb up Minegayama," Imaizumi grumbles.

"As if I'd sit out on practice!" Naruko shouts. "We're just unprepared today, Sakamichi-chan," he crows to the flour sack. "Tomorrow Papa Shoukichi will have a sling for you so you can sit on my back, all right?"

Imaizumi rolls his eyes so hard he almost crashes into the railguard at the next turn. Naruko gets ahead of him, and Imaizumi can't find the motivation to properly chase him for the rest of practice.

It's unsettling watching and listening to Naruko speak to the flour sack as if it were actually his child, their child. Imaizumi is prepared to meet the minimum requirements of the project, but he can't imagine ever treating the prop as a real child, or ever having a real child at all. It was impossible and unnecessary and... unsettling.

"Have you fed Sakamichi-chan?" Naruko asks, three days into the horrible project.

"Yes," Imaizumi mutters somewhere from underneath his arms crossed over his desk. He sat with his head face down on his arms; the flour sack is strapped to his back, and Naruko removes it carefully.

"Good," the redhead says brightly. "It's nice to see you finally taking up some responsibility, Hotshot! Isn't that right, Sakamichi-chan?"

A few girls in their class giggle. It takes everything Imaizumi has not to groan loudly. There's only two more days of the project, and then maybe he won't ever have to see a flour sack ever again.

"We don't have practice today, so maybe we can climb Minegayama, anyway, hm?"

Imaizumi starts to respond, but Naruko apparently isn't addressing him.

"You'd like that, wouldn't you, Sakamichi-chan?"

"I think you're starting to lose it, Naruko," Imaizumi mumbles. "You talk to that flour sack more than me."

"Well, maybe more people would talk to you if you weren't such a useless blowhard!"

Imaizumi lifts his head up and glares at the shorter boy. "Excuse me?"

"I'm doing all the work for this project, and you've barely lifted a finger to help raise poor Sakamichi-chan!" Naruko fakes a dramatic sob. "Single parenting is a terrible thing, you know!"

"What the hell?" Imaizumi squawks. "I've done everything you've told me to do on this stupid project! I don't know what else you're expecting!"

"Some initiative, maybe?! It's like you don't care at all about Sakamichi-chan!"

"It's a flour sack! You're already spoiling it for all it's worth! You bought it clothes!"

"It's good to know that you're such an unreliable father! " Naruko huffs. Then, cradling the flour sack, he turns on his heel and leaves the room.

Imaizumi is left to the accusing stares and poorly hidden snickers of the others in the room.

"Naruko..."

Imaizumi stands awkwardly at the corner of the building while Naruko carefully secures the flour sack to his back and adjusts the straps on his helmet.

"You're ignoring me now, huh?" Imaizumi guesses. "I never expected you to take this project so seriously. I knew you really liked kids... your little brothers love you, and you have a bunch of little cousins too... but I guess I never thought you'd actually want kids? But they mean a lot to you, huh?"

Naruko doesn't respond, but is clearly fiddling with his helmet for longer than necessary.

"Sorry," Imaizumi says. "I don't know anything about and don't really like kids. I don't want that kind of responsibility. It's enough trouble worrying about myself. And you. You get into a lot of stupid messes. I don't need another stupid baby to take care of."

Imaizumi sees a grin tug briefly at Naruko's lips, though he turns immediately to hide it.

"I don't know that I want kids," Naruko mutters. "They're fun though. It'd be cool to have one. But they're a lot of work, so if I don't have someone that'll take care of them with me, then I guess it won't happen."

"We shouldn't be worrying about kids right now," Imaizumi says. "It's too early. The whole point of the project is to prove that, right?"

"Yeah," Naruko agrees, uncharacteristically quiet.

"Here." Imaizumi crosses the distance between them and takes the flour sack out of the sling Naruko's made for it. "I'll carry them this time. That way you won't have any excuses when I beat you on the climb."

"As if," Naruko objects immediately, though he lets Imaizumi untie the sling from his shoulders. "Sakamichi-chan is a good luck charm for the climb. It'll be easier to win with him! But that's okay, Hotshot, you can use the luck. I'll still beat you."

Imaizumi smiles. "Loser changes the diaper."

"Loser buys dinner too!" Naruko cackles, mounting his bike.

"Oi! Let me get Sakamichi adjusted properly!"

"Too slow, Hotshot! You'd be faster if you'd helped out more!"

Naruko kicks off. Imaizumi grits his teeth, but checks twice to make sure the flour sack is secured, then jumps onto his own bike to chase after him.
