SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).


This round is made for exploration of all those "what-if?" scenarios, like "what if my favorite sports anime was actually a spaghetti western?" or "what if everything was the same except everyone was actually a car?"


This round ends at 7PM on June 27 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES

• Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms.
• An AU could be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [team] didn't win the Inter High in season 1, but [other team] did instead?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g.s pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
• Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
• Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

(Okay so like, the casting on this one might be kinda weak, but Imaizumi as a character has a nice vibe for a robot assassin, and delinquent Teshima is appealing, and Ro picks a lot of fights with Zeta, okay, just indulge me here. Bonus points for Kinjou as Imaizumi's creator.)

Okay so not office au but y'know. Also have fun seeing what I meant about my skills with writing pedals.

"You're going to let me in now," Makishima says. His voice sounds different to how it usually does - nicer but also bored, or perhaps just tired, Toudou contemplates as Makishima yawns.

Toudou hadn't thought about vampires needing to yawn, though he's thought plenty about a lot of other things about them. In the last month more than other times but even when vampires were fictional creatures from stories he enjoyed considering what it would be like to know one. Admittedly, Makishima is not what he had in mind.

Some aspects of storybook vampires work with Makishima's image. He's tall, for one, has a smile that sends heat straight to Toudou's dick as well - a key point that all vampires must have, as far as Toudou is concerned - and he can't enter a human dwelling without an invitation. Other aspects don't. His bicycle, leaning up against Toudou's letterbox is shiny and new, not an inch of rust on it and it hums through the night rather than creeks. There is nothing ominous about it at all, which isn't right for a vampire, though Toudou itches to adjust the saddle and take it for a spin to see how it compares to his own bike. His hair could work, but Toudou knows the colour is died and that takes out all of the mystery.

On foot, with his shoulders hunched and his long fingers tucked into the pockets of his bi-coloured trousers, he comes off as dusty, like someone ground up a mothball and sprinkled it over him.

Toudou finds his grin stretching wider than he meant it to as he steps aside from the doorway and says, "Of course, please come in, Maki-chan." He blinks. His mouth shrinks and he shoots Makishima a shrewd look as he steps over the threshold. "Was that-"

Makishima speaks over him. "You said you wanted to know what it's like."

Oh.

Toudou's full grin is back, and of his own will this time. "Maki-chan! Are you saying you're ready to take the plunge? Has the allure of my supple human physique struck a chord with your supernatural heart? Ah~ I'm not sure that I'll be able to follow through! You've caught me off guard, you're supposed to call before you pay a boy a conjugal visit - I haven't even had time to do my hair!"

From the time he's spent with Makishima, Toudou can tell that the way his face doesn't move at all means he understands both that Toudou is joking about his hair (which looks fantastic) and that Toudou is a very funny person.

Before Makishima decides to do something stupid like take his leave, Toudou hustles him into his kitchen. It's not large, and the most sophisticated thing in it is the blender, but it does Toudou fine. He pulls a package out of the fridge and passes it to Makishima, who has the grace to look taken aback. "Ah, I should heat that up for you, shouldn't I?" Toudou says and motions for Makishima to return it, but he holds tight to the package.

"I didn't really come here for a drink," Makishima says, pulling his fingers over the corner of the package of blood - mock blood - and forcing the liquid to make the sides bulge out. "I thought you might want to..." Makishima trails off and darts his eyes away before continuing, "hang out."

"Try and make some connections with the other kids, Kei. I know you can do it." Akiteru had said this before sending his brother off to school, with a bentou his mother had packed just for him. Nestled next to it was a small bag of cookies, more than he'd ever be able to eat on his own, packed with a strong suggestion to share them with the other kids.

The sweets felt like lead in his backpack as he walked the road to his elementary school, and felt like lead in his stomach as he walked back from school. He hands shook the way they sometimes did after he'd had too much sugar, and they'd been shaking ever since he'd eaten the entire bag, quietly at his own desk. He didn't look up from it during lunch.

He detoured on his way home, passing by a park where a few kids his age were rough housing in the sandbox. He'd seen some of them around, maybe. He never tried to talk to them. He didn't want to, he told himself.

When he got home, his brother's volleyball equipment was resting by the door. He set his backpack down and told his mom he had a stomach ache. Later, after she'd finished tossing the last few (crumbled, half eaten) cookies from his backpack, she set a flyer in front of him, one loudly proclaiming "little tykes volleyball!" Kei crossed his arms, mumbled "I guess", and slept with the flyer under his pillow.

Several days later he stood in his track suit, several feet away from the gaggle of kids in his age group. That day, when he came home, his mom asked him how the meet went. This time, Kei looked away and told her all about the friend he had made.

"His name is Yamaguchi, I guess. He's okay but he's really chatty." Upon further prodding, Kei told her all about how he'd maybe helped his friend out of a situation, even though he didn't really remember it, and also, they talked about how Niichan was the ace of his team.

That night he falls asleep with the flyer again, this time a secret crayon drawing of his new friend on the back.

As days go by, his mom starts receiving requests for extras of Kei's favorite foods to share with Yamaguchi, or for extra pocket money for the gatchapon (that he was going to stop at with Yamaguchi) Tsukishima-san's heart swelled at the way her youngest's cheeks would go a little rosy when he mentioned his friend, they way they always did when he pretended to not be excited.

It wasn't until parent-teacher night that it occurred to her that she's never met Yamaguchi before.

"You know, I was a little worried about my Kei, he was so anti-social. But ever since he met his friend Yamaguchi he's been a lot more excited about attending school!" The teacher had cocked her head to the side.

"Yamaguchi? I don't believe we have a Yamaguchi in this grade. Have you made friends with an upperclassmen, Tsukishima-kun?" Tsukishima-San knew she'd heard her son say Yamaguchi was his age.

She turned to her son, who was rigid with panic and terror, two adult gazes on him. Finally, he gulped.

"He's.... He's invisible a lot. 'Cuz he has freckles and he gets teased, I guess."

"Oh." Tsukishima-San said reflexively. It wasn't until she was packing her sons' bentos the next morning that the image of her Kei sitting alone at his desk, surrounded by peers he couldn't reach out to, hit her. She gulped, and wrapped both lunches with notes saying how much she loved her sons.

Years later, Kei found himself at a volleyball game, next to boys from his junior team that he'd never really connected to, and watched the image of his brother crumble to the ground. For the briefest moment, as he listened to the other kids remind him over and over again that his brother wasn't the hero he thought he was, he thought of his old imaginary friend. Would he have defended him from these kids like he'd always imagined he'd defended Yamaguchi from bullies?

He pushed the thought away. Maybe it was just better not to believe in anything at all.
