This popular round is back once again! To begin this year's SASO, we encourage you to let your mind run wild with alternate ideas and settings.


Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES

• Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
  • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
• An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.

Hikaru’s world is flashing neon and noisy animations, metal balls pinging off rods to net him jackpots that double and triple in size throughout the night, a third slot that threatens to send his head spinning along with its whirring characters, mentally crossed fingers and prayers under his breath to land upon a face that matches the duo already present on his screen. It sharpens his senses and sends him into mental overload, fingers twitching anxiously on the knob, debating how much muscle to put into a pull when he’s on a hot streak. But even so, his cheeks ache into the morning hours, a smile almost ever-present on his lips, thrilled at the prospect for more.

A ball drops into the catcher, and the familiar slots pop up again, landing one, two, and finally three matching images of a twin-tailed anime girl. Hikaru feels his heart rate ease up, and closes his eyes with a sigh, listening to the waterfall of the payout. He opens them again, winces at the overhead lights, takes a look at his watch. It’s a little past 2:00AM in the 24-hour parlor, on a Tuesday; he remembers he has a literature exam on Friday, and has already spent more than half of his food budget for the next two weeks (though with this payout, maybe not). But Sai’s face pops up in front of the time, even more familiar than that of his watch, puppy pout on his lips, and Hikaru laughs at himself for agreeing to Sai’s request before he starts to speak.

Hikaru, one more game?

Yeah, okay.

“Shindou.”

A hand falls on Hikaru’s shoulder, touch delicate yet firm, and he realizes that perhaps the most disorienting thing in playing pachinko are the moments when Akira Touya takes the time to speak to him. Hikaru nearly jumps, looks at the balls shining in his neighbor’s overflow trays, then up at him. Akira pauses for a second, lips parted as he lands upon the words, eyebrow raised politely with concern.

“Smoke break?”

They could smoke inside, and Hikaru’s tried, but multitasking has never been easy for him, ash falling onto his clothes, chomping down on the filter when he tries to focus. It’s nice to give his eyes a break, as much as the light pollution allows, anyway. The humidity is still present in the summer air; Hikaru tugs at the collar of his t-shirt. He takes Akira’s offered cigarette, palms the empty pocket of his shorts with a sigh, but Akira leans in with his lighter then, too, silver gleaming under the full moon.

Hikaru inhales; it’s lighter than what he’s ended up preferring lately, but it’ll do. He watches as Akira’s features are illuminated with a flare of orange, the night creating pleasant shadows along his cheekbones, hiding the faint discoloration under his eyes. He wonders when his touching Akira will extend beyond a jackpot-celebrating elbow bumping his shoulder, if he could convince Akira to come back to his tiny bed and the dirty laundry strewn about his dorm. It smells fine, and he could make them a decent breakfast in the morning, but it’s just like the possibility of surpassing Akira’s total for the night; imaginable, but not quite within his reach.

the god was moved enough by their love to offer them this mercy: that they would be born again into different lives throughout the ages, and they would always find one another.

and the god was furious enough to add this curse: that one of them would remember the other across all their lifetimes, while the other would never remember.

and the god was spiteful enough to do this: he took his beloved's beloved aside (so that would be chris), and told him that which of them is doomed to remember and which is doomed to forget would be chris' choice. make the choice right here, right now.

Kageyama feels like he should have paid more attention in biology class.

It's not like he had really expected Oikawa’s cock to look anything like his own. In that very specific kind of deep personal honesty that has Kageyama’s hand wrapped loose and warm around himself in the early hours of the morning, when he had woken to the wind coming off the sea and his room was filled with the smell of dead sea things and brine, Kageyama had thought of the way the water had rolled crystal and sweet off the silver-blue scales of Oikawa’s tail, and had thought maybe Oikawa was like that too, fairy tale sweet and crystal clear and seawater blue.

In some ways, he wasn’t wrong.




On the days that deep sea fish wash up dead with the tide, Kageyama can find Oikawa in the shallow pools near the rocky outcrop. There have always been summer stories of swimmers drowning here, bones smashed against the rock, or of sailors lured to their deaths, in stories that were much older than that, and indeed if you walked the narrow sand path that winds its way through the juts of grey rock that framed the sky, you could almost feel something like the deep pressure of the sea filling your lungs. You could always feel your ears pop with it.

Oikawa doesn’t sing so much as he brings the sea right up to the shore with him, and like the sea, when you see lights playing over the deep water, you need to heed the storm warnings.

“Oh, what’s this,” Oikawa says. His voice is like the waves pulling back from the sand; low and soft, alluring. He’s sitting half in the water, half propped up against the bank. “Looks like it’s the little brat again. Did you lose your way another time? Want me to hold your hand to find your way home?”

“No,” Kageyama snaps back, bristling, but there’s little heat in it. It’s late afternoon, but it seems like the sun never reaches this hidden place; everything is murky, the air tastes deep green and full of salt, and it makes Kageyama’s mouth water as he watches the blue light that lines Oikawa’s long tongue, the way it dips inside and out of his mouth each time Oikawa speaks. Kageyama never did pay much attention to the clouds on the horizon, his eyes were always turned to the deep water, curious, curiouser.

Oikawa’s gills ripple a little at the way Kageyama’s brow dips into a frown; he’s laughing in this throat. “What did you hope to find here, little human?”

Kageyama looks at the gleaming scales of Oikawa’s tail, the white hands that taper into claws, the two rows of small white teeth that frame the light in his mouth, always moving, always deeper, and Kageyama doesn’t notice when his ears pop from the deep sea pressure of the air, doesn’t notice he’s reaching for that dangling light before Oikawa laughs at him, a pretty laugh, a soft, low, deep sea laugh, and Kageyama thinks maybe he should have believed in the stories even just a little.

“Are you here to catch me,” Oikawa says cheerfully as Kageyama stumbles into the shallows. “Are you here to make a wish.”

Oikawa’s claws are tearing at his skin, Oikawa’s teeth are tearing at his mouth, and Kageyama can only swallow the salt and seawater off of Oikawa’s tongue as the water closes over them, and I’m going to die is the only thing that feels even a little like a wish as Kageyama tries to grab at anything that feels like land, like air, like the human made world.

Oikawa bites into his mouth instead, blood filling the water between them as his tiny white teeth find purchase in Kageyama’s tongue, and everything is salt, and copper, filling his nose as Kageyama tries frantically to struggle against Oikawa’s arms wrapped around him like he’s going to take Kageyama home. I’m going to die races through him again, but it’s now at the back of his thoughts, lightheaded, pulsing with the lack of air, scattering over him like sunlight reflecting off the water, and Kageyama knows he’s so close to the surface, so close, but he also feels so close to the bottom of the sea, too, and maybe--

Kageyama’s legs kick at nothing, the water a weight like the entire world is closing in on him, black and deep green and a burning as white as fish bones bleached in the sun, and as he breathes in salt water and blood and the light in Oikawa’s mouth, tingling, just like he thought it would be, beautiful and electric and Kageyama’s hands falter as his heart stutters under the water, something like delighted laughter bubbles right in his ear.

Air, he’s breathing. Air, air. Kageyama feels rock under his hands and he turns to the side and throws up sea water, brine stinging his cut mouth. He's cold, and he's shivering, and he's hard and already missing the salt of deep sea.

“Disgusting,” Oikawa says, scrunching up his nose as he splashes his tail a little beside Kageyama. “Not cute at all. We'll have to continue working on that.”

He’s distracted.
The rain is pattering against the window and he honestly wants to curl up in his bed, his dog a warm weight against his legs and sleep to the lullaby of thunder and rain.

“Miyuki.”

A deep honey gaze behind indoor spectacles glare at him. “Your father is going to be disappointed in you.” Miyuki snorts, because when was the last time his father actually spent time in the same room as him.
“Right, right” He drawls, “You’re here to make a proper adult of me? To show off at galas and fundraisers. It’s much more socially acceptable than letting people fuck his son for profit” He’s proud of the way the words fall from his tongue, sharp and challenging.

Kataoka Tesshin simply grins, and it throws Miyukis world three inches to the left, “Even so, you still need your manners while being fucked.”

For once, Miyuki is speechless and the burn low in his belly is more distracting than the calming noises of the thunderstorm outside. Kataoka takes the surprised silence to his advantage, continuing his lesson of the use of Sir, straight backs and eye contact.

Miyuki doesn’t hear any of it.

His downfall comes weeks later, when his live in teacher is outside swinging a bat. Kataoka was hired on for etiquette, but his physical build is sturdy. Wide shoulders and large arms, a thick waist showing a favor for core exercises. The bat in his hands swinging sharply in a well memorized course, legs planted firmly on the ground. Miyuki finds himself walking to his teacher, finds himself asking, politely, to be shown how to handle the bat. Finds himself with large hands at his waist and thighs, being placed into a proper stance.

Perhaps manners are something used to get what you want.

Kataoka finds Miyuki trailing after him on some days after their lessons, working up to asking something of him, he has suspicions though. What he doesn’t expect though, is his student sitting on his personal desk chair in his room, a flush sitting high on handsome features.

“Miyuki, what are you doing.”

He can see the retort that wants to slip from his mouth, but he gets a thick swallow instead, “Im here to become a proper gentleman, sir. Please, teach me, everything”

Kataoka is aware now, of how miyuki is shifting in the chair, of how it’s a calculated time where no one would look for either of them. He laughs deep, closing the space between them in calculated strides, large fingers curling around the delicate jawline. “Pay close attention, Miyuki.”

"All right, Tobio-chan, let's see how much you remember today. You're one minute late, by the way. Do try to make it on time tomorrow."

"I will, Oikawa-san!"

Oikawa lounged against the counter, chin in hand, and gazed down his nose to scrutinize his latest trainee.

Kageyama Tobio, a serious-faced teen with a stiff new dress shirt and neatly filed nails, was hastily tying his mint green apron in readiness to comply. His cheeks were pink and his hair was mussed from his rush to make it on time.

Oikawa fought to urge to roll his eyes. His eagerness to learn would almost be cute if he weren't so annoying about it. It was going to be another long shift.

See, it wasn't like the kid didn't show promise as a barista. On his first attempt with the espresso bar, he'd steamed foam almost perfectly just because he'd watched Oikawa's demonstration with such rapt attention. With more experience, he would definitely get the hang of things around here, just like Kunimi and Kindaichi before him, and really Oikawa had trained just about every barista who worked here by now. Irihata, his manager, praised him for being able to bring out anyone's talents with whatever learning style best suited them.

But this was Kageyama's first job ever.

He was a test of Oikawa's long-suffering patience. He couldn't memorize anything on the menu ("it's pronounced cap-uh-chee-noh, Tobio-chan, how have you never heard this word before"), didn't even drink coffee let alone know anything about it ("why did you apply for this job when all you drink is plain milk"), and was a complete disaster when it came to dealing with actual human beings ("the customer is always right, Tobio-chan, I do not care who started arguing first now give them the croissant or so help me I will put you on mop duty for a month").

Oikawa would be stuck babysitting the rookie until he developed the basic social skills necessary to run a cash register. In other words, for the foreseeable future.

Oikawa lazily stretched an arm toward the machine without adjusting his slouch, and pressed the button to pull a shot. Kageyama's eyes were trained on his hands like a puppy watching a tennis ball being waved in the air. Kageyama seemed like the kind of dog that would single-mindedly chase the ball right into a ditch or a lake without noticing. The mental image cheered him a little.

"Please name the three identifiable parts of an espresso shot for me," Oikawa asked with the smooth, polite tone he reserved for customers and idiots.

Kageyama squinted at the shot glass as the machine rumbled. His focus was so intense, it looked like he was trying to make it tip over with his mind.

The nutty aroma of coffee beans filled the air as the shot glass quietly filled with dark amber espresso.

"Well?" Oikawa prompted, studying his manicured fingernails. He wondered if he could get away with playing games on his phone while he kept Kageyama busy washing dishes or something.

Kageyama's scowl deepened, brows furrowed with concentration. The glass did not, however, respond to any attempts at telekinesis.

"…Caffeine," Kageyama attempted.

Oikawa pointed at him and flashed him a grin.

Kageyama squared his shoulders, eyes shining hopefully.

"Incorrect!" Oikawa chirped brightly.

Kageyama deflated, corners of his mouth pulling into a sulky frown.

"Oikawa-san, can you teach me how to do latte art?"

Oikawa scoffed. He settled a hand on his hip, and cocked his head to one side, channeling the sassiest expression he could muster.

"You don’t know any of the basics yet. Name three drinks without looking at the menu."

Kageyama's eyes automatically darted to the menu board before he could help himself.

"Failed step one," Oikawa announced. "All right, tell me what non-dairy milk alternatives we offer to customers."

Kageyama's gaze narrowed.

"That's a trick question. All milk is dairy."

"How many shots in a doppio?"

"Three. No. Two. One?"

"What are the ingredients in café au lait?"

"Café. I mean coffee. And espresso."

Oikawa heaved a dramatic sigh and made a show of rubbing his temples.

"Wrong, wrong, wrong. What am I supposed to do with you, Tobio-chan? You have to study harder if you want to keep working here. Do you expect me to keep holding your hand forever?" he whined.

"Teach me how to do latte art," Kageyama blurted. "Yours is the best. I want to practice with you."

Oikawa scrunched his nose in disdain. His one-track mind was ridiculous. Oikawa was beginning to suspect this was the only reason Kageyama wanted to become a barista. How annoying.

"I don't feel like it," Oikawa announced pettily, and stuck out his tongue. "We're going to be on the register all afternoon and you're going to take everyone's orders and you're going to smile the whole time. A real smile, Tobio-chan, the kind that earns tips instead of making children cry."

Kageyama didn't say anything aloud, but his constipated expression said it all. He fidgeted for a moment, shuffling his feet against the tiles as he worked through how to protest without Oikawa finding further delight in his suffering.

Oikawa waited, smiling pleasantly as he tapped a finger against the counter.

Kageyama settled into a quick bow. "I'll do my best, Oikawa-san," he promised formally.

Oikawa perked up.

"Good start," he preened. "Maybe in between customers, I'll let you make a drink for me. I'm going to need a lot of caffeine to get through today."

He brushed past Kageyama, choosing to ignore the way his protégé brightened and trailed at his heels like a hopeful puppy. It was almost cute, a little. If only he weren't so annoying at the same time.
