This popular round is back once again! To begin this year's SASO, we encourage you to let your mind run wild with alternate ideas and settings.


Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES

• Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
  • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
• An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.

Ever since graduating culinary school, Youichi’s heard the phrase, “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen,” too many times to count. He’s cooked at shitty hole-in-the-wall joints, and expensive restaurants, and any number of places in between, but Seidou is the only place where he might think the phrase applies.

“Sawamura!” Youichi roars, sweat beading the handkerchief he’s tied hachimaki-style around his forehead. “Get your illiterate ass over here!”

“Coming, coming,” Sawamura grumbles back, wiping his hands hastily on his apron. “What,” the kid huffs, like he hasn’t done the shittiest job on the planet julienning vegetables.

“What do you mean, what,” Youichi hisses, grabbing a handful of suspect carrots. “What the fuck is this! What the fuck are you?”

In another place, Sawamura would have been fired long ago and Youichi would have several complaints written up on an official docket simply for the degree of violent shouting he’s had to perform in this kid’s ear. But fortunately, Sawamura is thicker than tomato paste.

“I’m Eijun,” he replies, confused. “You just said--”

Youichi resists the urge to give his idiot kitchen slave (the official title, Chris reminds them, is commis) a real Wrestlemania smackdown. It’s quarter to five o’clock and his asshole sauté chef needs to be torn away from his station to collect his disaster servant. “Furuya!” He does not have the time to babysit someone like Sawamura, not now.

Amidst the clatter of pots and pans, their pantry chef emerges from the deeps. Tall, reticent, and pale, Furuya reaches out to drop an ice cube under Sawamura’s collar. “Hey!” he yelps, and Youichi turns on his heel to leave them to it. Better Sawamura suffer now than when Ryou-san finds out what he’s done to the carrots.

On some days (most days), Seidou feels more like a massive hellscape of mistakes instead of a successful restaurant. It’s only due to the grace of their maitre d’ and the sheer skill of their executive chef that people here are employed, or so Youichi reminds them. They’re already taking something of a gamble on a few new hires: Furuya Satoru, who came in as their pantry chef with high recommendations from some Michelin-starred place in Hokkaido, Sawamura Eijun, who had, by some miracle, actually graduated culinary school, and Ryou-san’s little brother, who serves as their roundsman at the tender age of--

It’s hard to not elbow his sauté chef in the gut, with the way he just pops up behind Youichi like that, but Youichi’s always been a believer in striving for the highest of goals. And besides, despite his gourmand talents, exceptional skills with a knife, and fantastically particular taste buds, Miyuki Kazuya was still first and foremost a royal pain in the ass. There was something to be said about a man who only smiled in the face of Youichi’s favorite knife, but before Youichi can gut him like a fish Ryou-san’s presence filters into the kitchen, at long last.

Merely by stepping into the kitchen, a preternatural chill invades the space. Youichi drops the jokes and goes full-bore into business mode, one eye on Tetsu-san as he and the chef de partie divide and conquer, making the rounds.

Nori at the roasts, good, Tanba-san at the grill, good, Miyuki at his post, Youichi counts them all off, the entire kitchen turning itself over from a working buzz to a frenzied clatter.

Behind him, liquid footsteps register in Youichi’s ears. “Ryou-san,” he starts, and turns to see the ever-calm, ever-smiling face of his executive chef. Grinning, Youichi brushes a quick kiss on his cheek, Ryousuke’s eyes curved in an imperceptible welcome.

“Youichi,” he replies, and begins to roll up his sleeves. “Let’s get started, shall we?”

“Of course, I’ll do it,” Tatsuya said. “Don’t forget that I taught you how to bake, Taiga.”

But Taiga shook his head, looking stubborn. He’d explained the situation to Tatsuya and it still didn’t make much sense. He had been playing streetball with his friends when their basketball had completely missed the basket and disappeared into someone’s walled-off garden. Taiga, like an idiot, had decided to climb the ten-foot wall to get the ball. But --

“A monster lived in that house,” Taiga said flatly. “He threatened to crush me if I didn’t get him snacks.”

“That doesn’t sound too bad,” Tatsuya began to say.

Taiga blinked at him. “I’m pretty sure he’s a cannibal.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Tatsuya said. “I’m sure we can discuss this rationally. I’ll bring him some lemon bars! Did you get your ball back?”

“Hell no.”

“I’ll get it for you, then.”

Unlike Taiga, Tatsuya rang the doorbell and waited for the gate to buzz him in. It was pretty strange to see such a big house, surrounded by trees, in densely packed city like this. Whoever the owner was, he must be pretty rich. There was no reply to Tatsuya’s second or third buzzes, and he was debating just going home when the intercom came to life.

Tatsuya heard some heavy breathing and then a voice growled. “What is it?”

“Hi!” Tatsuya said cheerfully. “My brother Taiga was over a few days ago, to get his ball? He promised you snacks in exchange for it? I have lemon bars.”

“I don’t like lemon,” said the stranger, and buzzed him in.

It was the strangest house Tatsuya had ever been -- a mansion, sure, but utterly deserted. The grounds were littered by dozens and dozens abandoned balls -- basketballs, some baseballs and the occasional soccer ball. Tatsuya reflected that the house must be close to a school grounds or something and the owner must really take finder’s keepers very seriously.

Finally, he went into the house (also deserted) and went into the kitchen (surprisingly clean.) Tatsuya set his lemon bars on the kitchen table and looked around. He wondered how appropriate it would be if he took a look around. Deciding on doing exactly that, Tatsuya headed for the door, only to spot when he saw that his way was blocked by the longest pair of legs he’d ever seen. Those legs were attached to a long torso, and long, long arms reached out to grab him.

“Oh shit,” Tatsuya said aloud, finally losing his calm.

Turned out, Murasakibara really did hate lemons. He ate the entire baking dish’s worth of lemon bars though, complaining all the while. Despite what Taiga had said, Murasakibara wasn’t a monster -- at least, not literally. He was just -- very tall. Very, very tall. And strong. Tatsuya didn’t really think of himself as very fragile, but Murasakibara had whirled him around like he was made of paper.

“Do you live here by yourself?” Tatsuya asked. Murasakibara seemed pretty young, despite his size. He might even be Taiga’s age. “Do you go to school?”

“You ask too many questions,” Murasakibara muttered, finishing up the lemon bars.

“Sorry, I’m just really curious. Do you scare a lot of kids who try to get their ball?”

“No one’s stupid enough to climb the wall,” Murasakibara said sullenly.

“No one but Taiga,” Tatsuya said cheerfully. He got up from his seat and dusted his hands. “Well, I guess I should go. I’ve got school tomorrow.”

“You can’t go,” said Murasakibara, as if it was obvious. “You have to stay here forever.”

“Eh?” Tatsuya cocked his head to the side and thought about it. “Do you really want that? If you let me go, I’ll come back next week with something different. Do you like chocolate?”

Murasakibara looked him suspiciously. “What kind of chocolate?”

“Chocolate chip cookies. It’s really good. It might take me some time to track down all the ingredients but I promise you that you’ll love it.”

“How do I know you’ll come back? You could be lying. Everyone lies to me.”

“I promise I won’t.”

“Leave that here to make sure,” Murasakibara said, pointing to Taiga’s ring hanging around Tatsuya’s neck. Tatsuya hesitated for a moment before he nodded, taking off his necklace and dropping the ring and chain into Murasakibara’s large hands.

The next week, Tatsuya was back with a plate of freshly baked cookies. Taiga still hadn’t forgiven him for losing the ring, but he didn’t really know what choice he had. He rang the bell and the gates opened before him.

The week after that, it was the same thing.

And of course, eventually Tatsuya got lazy and just bought something from the combini for Murasakibara and he loved it so much more than anything Tatsuya ever made him from scratch.

Taiga never got his ball back, but eventually Murasakibara did leave his house, if only to go to this magical place, the combini, the place of endless snacks.

Tatsuya could only count that as a win.

Otabek had been locked up before. He always did his best to stay out of jail, of course, but it wasn’t the end of the world. Mouthing off to a high-strung guard had gotten him a black eye, a split lip, and solitary confinement. His mouth stung but at least it was quiet.

He stretched out the full length of the hard cot and listened to the howl of the wind outside. It seemed like a storm was coming. He wasn’t worried about himself and Yuri was safely in the wind. His partner would fare much worse in captivity than Otabek - far too pretty and absolutely no brain to mouth filter. At least he could be circumspect when he wanted to be and he probably wouldn’t be in here long.

Not more than an hour later the steady drum of rain was split by a ferocious crash that seemed close by. Otabek felt the stone under him shudder for a moment. That wasn’t thunder. Definitely an explosion.

There was no one to see him so he didn’t bother to hide his grin. Subtlety was never his lover’s strong suit. But whatever got the job done, right?

After a beat or two of silence he heard a familiar voice scream, “Beka, cover!”

Otabek quickly stepped into the farthest corner from the wall and dropped into a crouch, ducking his head between his knees and started counting. The wall behind him blew on thirty just as he expected, a smaller blast but closer - showering his back in stone chips and dust, setting his ears ringing.

When the dust settled he straightened up and turned to see Yuri framed by a ragged hole in the wall - hair tangled and dripping and eyes blazing like the moon, a small block of plastic explosives in one hand.

“You’re a sight for sore eyes, angel.”

Yuri wrinkled his nose, shoving the Semtex H in his pocket. “Don’t call me shit like that.”

Otabek chuckled and Yuri rolled his eyes. “But here you are, avenging and everything.”

His partner stalked over, getting up into Otabek’s face, backing him right up against the bars and inspecting his face. “Apparently not fast enough. Bastards.”

Before Otabek could protest that it was purely cosmetic and he was fine Yuri had stolen his breath with a deep, fierce kiss.

He chased Yuri’s tongue and twisted his hands in the wet silk of Yuri’s hair, swallowing the blonde’s moan as they pressed their hips together.

Yuri tore his mouth away, tipping his head back so Otabek could suck a dark mark just under the line of his jaw, hands tugging sharply at the waist of the rough fabric at Otabek’s waist. “You even make these shitty coveralls look hot.”

“I do my best.”

One more searing kiss later and he thought maybe he could start to hear the staccato of footfalls nearby. “Should we maybe consider moving this reunion to a more optimal location? Maybe one with a little less natural ventilation?”

Yuri laughed into his shoulder and it was the best thing ever. “Probably. I have a ride waiting for us. We can’t come back to the Czeck Republic for a year or two. Hope that’s ok,” he said in a tone that implied that he didn’t give a shit if it wasn’t. Besides, he knew Otabek trusted him implicitly.

They untangled themselves and Yuri quickly clipped a harness around Otabek’s waist so he could follow him down the rope he’d anchored to the bars.

Otabek met Yuri’s wild smile with a grin of his own. “Ready to get out of here, darling?”

“We’re already gone, baby.”

And then they were.

It should have been fine; the celebrity packed streets of West Hollywood might as well be a world away from downtown Tokyo, and Oikawa’s recent appearance at the Billboard Music Awards was only a minor phenomenon stateside because of the history being made by an asian artist. None of his songs even chart outside of Japan, and the social media category was little more than a popular vote, of which of the overwhelming majority of them had come from his fans back home, trying to trend the hashtag of their eternal golden boy. Oikawa loves his fans, but not even R29 had tweeted about him.

Los Angeles had felt like a safe zone. Which is why when Ushijima, also in town to negotiate his debut english performance in a Netflix original series, had proposed they meet up for a quickie and a cold-pressed juice, as they do in Hollywood, Oikawa had taken little more than the basic precautions: coverup hoodie, fake glasses, condoms.

“I apologise for my indiscretions, Oikawa,” Ushijima says, mouth close to Oikawa’s ear, large hands pressed low on his hips as they both try to adjust to the small confined space, and Oikawa almost resents the way it strikes something electric all along his spine. “I will make it up to you.”

They watch as the screaming crowds and the cameras pass them by, and then it’s suddenly quiet again; it’s just traffic noise and pedestrian chatter and the foosteps of the well-pedicured rich.

“You can start by taking that ridiculous hat off,” Oikawa says, nose scrunched up in disdain at the tattered green ballcap that flattens Ushijima’s hair against his forehead. “No one’s going to recognise you until you show up in gif sets on tumblr, Ushiwaka-chan, there’s no need to make yourself even uglier.”

Ushijima just replies by kissing Oikawa gently on the nose, and laughs soft and low when Oikawa squawks indignantly when his fake glasses slip down.
