Bonus Round 3: FSTs

FSTs

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Profess your love for your favorite ships with the power of song! In this round, we ask you to create fan soundtracks and use them as inspiration for new fanwork.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts in the form of a short playlist (1-6 songs) and a ship from any of our nominated fandoms. Submit only the track listing and a link to where they can be listened to; the idea is for others to interpret what you present. You may also link to lyrics if you would like.
  • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Lilia & Sara). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Lilia/Sara). Please don't say "Any pairing," either.
  • Create content based on the playlists of others! Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Fills may be in any form you choose (except for another FST of course) as long as they are inspired by/fit the mood of the soundtrack they are filling for.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

The forest is a comfortable place to be; Kuroo likes watching the nixes in the river from his place on a rock close to the water. He likes listening to the tree spirits and nymphs whispering and giggling amongst themselves. He enjoys the pure and natural energy from the plants around his place.

He doesn't mind waiting, not here. Even though he doesn't remember how long it's been since he's come to the forest nor what exactly he's waiting for...

He knows that whatever he's waiting for will eventually occur, though; or, if it's a person, they'll surely pass by. It's the only thing he knows for sure. And until then, he's patient. He won't move anywhere far from the rock, won't leave this place. No matter what happens, he'll stay here.

"You're still here!" Bokuto, a friendly owl yokai says, each time it passes by. Kuroo likes that yokai, it's nice to talk to and have fun with. Time passes a little more quickly together, but the yokai can never stay in one place for too long, so it's always gone before long. Kenma also visits sometimes; he's a shapeshifter who happens to like taking the shape of a cat. He doesn't talk much, but he spends time with Kuroo regardless. Kenma curls up next to him for a nap, or just sits back-to-back with Kuroo and listens to one of the nixes he knows very well, apparently. People come and go, Kuroo is still there. On the rock near the river, waiting. Hikers pass sometimes, he messes with them, gives them the wrong directions if he's asked. Chuckles to himself as he does so.

Nothing happens, nothing out of the ordinary, and spring slowly comes to an end. It gets hotter, so Kuroo often just lays down, flat on his back across the rock and stares at the cloudless sky. He sleeps a lot. Drinks a lot of water, to which the nixes complain, try to drag him into the stream and almost succeed one time. But nothing else out the ordinary happens, not in summer.

His waiting continues into fall, when leaves drop around him and the temperatures decrease gradually. The sun sets earlier and Kuroo gets to see dragonflies. They settle on his rock if he's perfectly still, enjoying the last bit of summer heat radiating of the stone. Lev and Yaku spend a night at his rock, filling Kuroo in on their plans for the winter; they're wandering through the forest looking for a warmer place to spend the winter at. Both of them are long gone when Kuroo wakes up the next morning. It's particularly cold that day, Kuroo hides in the niche at the side of his rock and wraps himself in a blanket, hoping that it won't rain.

Which it does, later that afternoon. It rains, heavily. So much that one can't see very far through the curtain of raindrops falling. And it gets even colder; it's probably less than ten degrees for the first time since last winter. Kuroo hates it. He can't even make a small fire like this...

All he can do is wait, listen to the rain and praying for it to go away soon. Shivering, too, but he can't control that. At least it smells nice; the scent of the rain, that is. Especially in forest.

Though it's different right now; something else is out there, some stench. It's not the nixes playing in the rain or the tree spirits celebrating the downpour... it's sickening, metallic.

It's blood. And not just any blood... It's the blood of a feathered beast. Those aren't too rare, but they're usually peaceful and don't have enemies in this forest. And, most of all, they don't walk; they fly. This one's walking, dragging its feet through the rain. Kuroo can hear it approach.

And, for a reason unknown to himself -- an unconscious urge, a reflex or something? -- he runs. Runs straight towards the harpy, his rock long forgotten. Because this, he realizes more and more with each hasty step, is who he's waited for. This is... who is it...

"Tsukki!", he yells, only half aware of his own actions at the moment. It doesn't matter; this is... Tsukki...

"Kuroo.", Tsukki greets. Or wait, his name's actually Tsukishima... Kuroo remembers everything vividly when he lays eyes on Tsukishima, when their gazes meet and when they hug each other. Memories flood his mind; memories of a contract, Tsukishima's pushed on him, of him willingly letting Tsukishima take some of his memories, of agreeing to wait here on this rock and letting Tsukishima take care of a business only he knows of. Memories of Tsukki, of Tsukishima Kei, Kuroo's soulmate. Everything makes sense, now. Kuroo still trusts Tsukishima blindly, just like he did back then. Would still do anything and more for him.

Kuroo wants to know what happened, how Tsukki got all these wounds, but he leaves it be, for now. He mutters small words of his mother tongue, holds Tsukishima a little tighter and begins healing him up right away. Tsukishima doesn't move much, but he leans against Kuroo, closes his eyes and enjoys the warm feeling of getting patched up. Of being close to Kuroo again after three years, of his business finally being over...

Even though he could block the rain with his wings, could easily shelter both of them from it, Tsukishima doesn't. He likes things this way. He likes kissing in the rain; which they do. They steal small kisses between forehead touches and meaningful gazes. He enjoys not talking, but listening to the nymphs, the nixes and spirits whispering around them, maybe about them. It's good to be home, finally.

I can't believe I wrote KinKage breaking up;;;

***

There was screaming at first, then more screaming later, and finally the slam of an angry door. Kindaichi let everything unfold before his eyes and didn't even flinch when the photo frame got broken in the process, after much shoving and turning around, because who is he to still care about it?

The living room is empty. His breath is pushing against the walls and he can't stop the ringing in his ears, because all he's thinking about is the words, a string of arrows made to hurt him in every single possible way. He shouldn't have been so surprised when it happened. The past days' events suddenly come rushing back to him, and somehow he can't find relief in the fact it's over.

It's plain wrong.

He lets himself slump against the door, burying his face in his hands and breathing, just breathing to let the words sink in (disappear) and the tension vanish. He has never imagined it could come to this.

No, no, he knew it would come to this, but not so harshly. He didn't ask to have his heart ripped out and crushed by a single set of hands. He thought he would be glad to be left alone, to finally be able to breathe in nontoxic air again, but the words keep swirling in his head, pounding, haunting, relentlessly.

'I'll be better off without you. I shouldn't have thought it would work.'

Shouldn't. Kindaichi hates that word. Should, shouldn't. They should have, they shouldn't have. Nothing matters anymore, because it's the end of the road. Kageyama's hateful eyes are still glaring at him, and he thinks that maybe his own dark look was enough to leave a similar feeling.

Gods, this is so, so fucked up.

When he looks up, he sees the scattered pieces of the photo frame laying on the floor, cold and accusing. Kageyama had looked so happy on that day, a few years ago, and Kindaichi had wanted to keep that smile close to him forever. Integrated in his mind, flowing in their home, the bliss they should have kept living in is now just a memory.

He feels like it's the end of the world, but maybe in a few days he'll be glad that it happened. Nobody can think straight in the heat of the action. The lingering hope and despair might as well transform into fierceness. Kindaichi won't let all this affect him so much that it leaves him broken on the ground.

For now, he casts aside the pain and steadies himself on two strong legs to carry him onwards.

I'm sorry this is more KuniKage than KinKuniKage ;o;

***

Akira stares at the screen of his phone, both surprised and completely at a loss. He hasn't seen that name flash before his eyes in a long time, and he doesn't know if he should feel happy, disgruntled or worried. He swallows, and takes the call.

"... Hello?"

"Akira," the voice says, the syllables of the name stretching out as if they didn't know when to end. "'m sorry to call you so late..."

Akira thinks that there should be an apology for something else other than calling at 1 a.m., but the words stay lodged in his throat despite the thoughts in his brain running at one hundred kilometers per hour. He tries to stay composed, to let his breath remain steady, and quietly replies.

"Is something wrong?"

"Everything's wrong," Tobio tells him in a heavy sigh, and suddenly Akira imagines him pinching the bridge of his nose, shoulders drooped and eyes wary of what's to come. "Still have stuff to tell you. And to Yuutarou. It's just not easy."

Akira's stomach is churning. He narrows his eyes.

"Are you drunk?"

The last time Tobio got drunk was at his twentieth birthday, when the whole crew from Karasuno explicitly stated that this party wasn't going to end before they got at least a full folder of embarrassing photos of Tobio. They got first-hand a taste of Tobio's mushiness and clinging, which was both endearing and slightly weird. Akira didn't particularly like seeing him in this state.
(And he still doesn't.)

"I think, I dunno," Kageyama says. At least he knows there's alcohol in his system. "Is Yuutarou with you?"

"Why would he be with me?"

The words slip out harsher than he intended, and maybe he isn't totally over what happened, even though it has been a year. People can't forget so easily.

"Because you guys were always much better at the whole thing than me." The confession pierces Akira straight in the heart.

"We already had that discussions," he whispers.

A year ago, the tension and the constant arguments were too much. Kunimi isn't sure if this was a mutual agreement to stop what they had, or if one of them had the courage to step up and the others just followed. Yuutarou cried angry tears, Tobio kept hissing furious words, and Akira listened, snapping remarks he had decided not to tell up until that moment.

"I know, but maybe we were wrong? Everything's wrong."

"Then tell me what was wrong."

"I dunno. I wasn't always the best at following advice. And."

There's rustling, the noise of someone kicking their shoes off, and then crashing somewhere. Akira wonders if Tobio just got home and was trying to find his words through the haze of alcohol and memories. He shouldn't even be having a conversation with a drunk Tobio. Where is Hinata?

"Should've listened more, and speaking up more," Tobio rambles. Strangely enough his voice doesn't waver, and Akira, in a surge of affection long forgotten, suspects he has practiced saying this specific sentence.

He wants to cry.

"Why are you telling me this now?" he chokes out.

"I miss you. I miss Yuutarou too. Gods, I don't know why I'm saying that."

The heaviness in Akira's body is lifting, just a little, but that's enough to make him laugh, maybe a bit humorlessly but it's a start to everything and it's incredibly satisfying.

"You're an idiot," he says.

"Yeah, you told me that a lot."

"Because it's true. Now go to sleep. You're drunk."

He hears a hum, oddly content, and the line goes dead. Akira honestly didn't expect Tobio to obey that quickly. For a while, his phone is still pressed against his ear, as he tries to process what just occurred.

So, so stupid.

His fingers hover over his contact list, stopping at the 'ki' section. Even if this was a call done without his full attention, Tobio still overcame the fear they were all probably drowning in.

Akira opens a new message.

'Hey, it's been a while. Tobio was drunk, and he called me. Can we meet at his apartment tomorrow?'

summer is at an end, and your voice just
grows hoarse, grows faint, just a little
your back to glowing red

faded dreams dye you now

the cicada's song stops
and, still hoarse,
under the torii where the crows cry
you laugh, in the corners of summer

This song gave me a very particular FEEL so I tried to convey that here. I hope it works! And that the characterization is more or less how you see them interacting!

***

Natsuya's hand feels oddly delicate in Sousuke's, small and slim-fingered. Despite gap in their ages, Natsuya just always feels smaller to Sousuke, the mandarin to his orange. Alike, but built on a differet scale.

The sun's warmth is lingering in the air even as the sun sets; it's like an invisible cloak, touching their skin from the inside as the soft breeze gently stirs their hair. Hand in hand, they wend their way down the hill in perfect quiet contentment. Cicadas are chirping from the trees, singing the love song of summer dying, and Sousuke can't hear Natsuya's breathing even when he strains.

When he looks sideway, Natsuya's smiling to himself as he licks at the last little bit of his half-melted Popsicle.

"Tasty?" Sousuke asks, less because he doubts it and more because he wants to hear Natsuya's voice.

"Yes," Natsuya confirms and tilts the stick in Sousuke's direction. "You want some?"

"...Sure." There's hardly any left but Sousuke licks anyway, a shiver going through him at the first touch of his tongue to something so cold.

Natsuya's lips look cold too, now that Sousuke studies them. They're shiny-sticky from the Popsicle, but paler than usual.

He leans in, still holding Natsuya's hand, and touches his lips just lightly to Natsuya's. Yeah. Cold.

Like a good boyfriend, Sousuke takes it upon himself to warm Natsuya up; he steps in, slipping his free arm around Natsuya's waist and pulls him into the gentlest of kisses. The grass tickles at Sousuke's ankles and Natsuya accidentally kicks his foot when Natsuya shifts as well to lean into the kiss. Natsuya's hoodie is thin, made of some lightweight material more suited to t-shirts, and Sousuke can feel the ridges of Natsuya's spine through it.

When he slides his hand up, the jut of Natsuya's shoulderblade fits perfectly into his palm. Natsuya shifts a little, one arm held out to a side, and Sousuke glances in its direction just in time to see the faint trail of blue as the Popsicle melts and slides down Natsuya's forearm. He lets go of Natusya's shoulderblade to catch his elbow instead, propping his arm up so that Sousuke can lick upwards, tongue flat against the muscled forearm and following the sweet, cold trail upwards. The salt of Natsuya's skin mingles with the Popsicle flavor, artificial icy raspberry, and when Sousuke licks over Natsuya's palm and sweeps his tongue up the trembling fingers, Natsuya shivers against him.

They kiss like that as the last light of the setting sun sweeps over them; it makes a single silhouette of them, two instead of one, pressed so closely together that there's no space between their bodies for the sun to shine through.

chris is hard to write, why did i do this to myself

***

Chris was born in Japan and he's lived there for most of his life; in high school he liked English even though sometimes his classmates asked him if he was only good at it because of his father; he loves baseball, which is America's favourite pastime but seems to have found a comfortable home in Japan; he thinks he might love a person, too.

When he talks about his father he uses words he doesn't use when he talks with his father, which only hits him when he’s older; “Dad” is not a Japanese word. With his father he mostly talks about baseball, which has always been the case. Every culture has something it represses and Chris and his father have, in their mish-mash of cultures, chosen everything but baseball.

Anyway, he’s in America right now so he might have to, god forbid, acknowledge these things.

“My, you’ve grown!” says Bernice, the middle-aged lady who might be Chris’ cousin or great-aunt or something in between. She must know him through pictures. All Chris knows about her is that his father gave him her number and wished him luck.

“Thank you,” Chris says, like he practiced. He turns to motion at Tanba behind him. “This is my friend,” he says, “Tanba.”

She keeps talking as she motions them into her home, and Chris understands… well, he gets the general idea. It’s obvious from the look on Tanba’s face that he got lost after Chris’ “thank you.”

“Yes,” Chris says, when he catches the words ‘national team’, “we are lucky to be here.”

Chris made it to first string and Tanba made it as a back-up pitcher, for Japan at the 23U Baseball World Cup, being hosted in L.A. It’s Chris’ second time in America, though the first time he was so young, all he knows is what his mother told him about the visit. Things like, how he cried when they couldn’t find the juice he liked in America, but then by the time he’d gotten used to it, they’d gone back to Japan and he’d cried again because he wanted the American juice. For some reason, this story is etched forever into his mind.

He doesn’t even like juice anymore.

Tanba sits across from him in an armchair. Bernice abandoned them in her living room, bustling off in a direction that Chris assumes is the kitchen. Feeding guests has to be a universal thing.

“You okay?” Chris asks, glad to speak in Japanese.

Tanba blinks at him. They haven’t spent much time with each other since high school, but enough that Chris felt comfortable bringing Tanba over to a relative’s so he wouldn’t be alone. Now he wonders if it was the right choice. Tanba looks grim.

“I’m good,” Tanba says.

“You look like you’re ready for battle,” Chris says. “We can go, if you want.”

Tanba shakes his head. He hasn’t shaved his hair completely since that promise in third year, but he still keeps it at a buzzcut. It makes his cheekbones obvious.

“You’ve barely ever seen your family,” Tanba says.

Chris wants to shrug that off, but he’d be denying an entire branch of his family to do so. He shrugs with one shoulder as a compromise.

“Well, you know,” Bernice says, coming into the living room with a tray of juice, “we didn’t call him Animal here! What a funny nickname.”

“Animal,” Tanba says. He nods. Bernice nods back at him, pleased. “Chris’ father.”

“Yes!” Bernice says, clearly excited and handing out glasses of juice to Chris and Tanba.

Chris stares at his while Tanba takes a polite sip. Bernice goes to a bookshelf and pulls out a photo album.

Bernice talks a lot, and she talks the same way Chris’ dad does when he’s on the phone with family. There’s an accent there that’s different than the one he has when he talks to Chris in English, and words mixed in that Chris wouldn’t have learnt in class, or from his father, too hick and natural to learn formally.

But it’s comforting to hear it here, like this, as Bernice goes through the photo album, pointing out people related to Chris. It’s a little piece of America he’s familiar with from personal experience instead of from movies, so in that way it’s his.

They leave a few hours later. Chris had driven them here in a rental car, and he drives them back to the team’s hotel.

“Thanks,” he says, as they walk up to the rooms. He’s suddenly so exhausted. He’d done his usual training in the morning, but nothing that would make him feel like this. Drinking juice and looking at a photo album should not be this tiring.

“Of course,” Tanba mumbles. It must be obvious on Chris’ face, how tired he is, because Tanba then says, “Maybe you should take a nap before dinner.”

“Yeah,” Chris says, “good idea.” He smiles at Tanba, claps a hand to his shoulder. “It really means a lot to me, that you came along.”

Tanba nods once, then looks away, though he can’t hide how red he is in the face. Chris grins to himself. Some things are constant.

Haru didn’t understand why Rin always insisted on including Sousuke in their foraging expeditions until the day Nagisa was almost bit. Nagisa was always the quickest one of them -- on land, anyway -- and the walker had come out nowhere. And after a moment of crystallized shock, the walker’s head disappeared in a puff of red mist. Haru whirled around to see Sousuke shouldering his rifle. They exchanged cool looks of acknowledgement. Haru didn’t question the need for Sousuke to come along with them again.

*

Try as hard as they could, they lost people, one by one. Makoto hadn’t ever been right since the rising began and he had lost both his parents and his younger siblings. He gone first and it nearly killed Haru to lose him. It was only the reappearance of Rin that stopped him from following Makoto. There was still Nagisa and Rei and Gou to take care of, after all.

And then there was Sousuke, a shadow that always lurked behind Rin. He’d stuck to the Matsuokas shortly after the rising. From Rin Haru learned that the three of them were pretty much the only family left for each other.

Rei was picked up by what was left of the military. They were gathering up what was left of the scientific community to find a cure for the walkers, and apparently, a particularly smart high schooler qualified. Nagisa had gone along with Rei -- it was impossible to separate them, after all. At both Rin and Sousuke's strenuous insistence, Gou had gone with them -- there was no more room for the the rest of them.

Haru, Rin and Sousuke watched them go, each knowing that they'd done the right thing.

Nagisa and Gou waved at them frantically, until the twist of the road swallowed them up.

*

The blood was hardly noticeable, against the red of Rin’s hair. He was still smiling when Haru reached him, slipping on the blood as he did so, his teeth biting so hard that Haru could see the pinpricks of red on his lower lip. “Rin, Rin, don’t --” Haru babbled, “don’t leave us, please.”

Rin’s eyes flickered over to where Sousuke was, a half a step behind Haru. “You guys are going to be okay?”

“Yeah,” Sousuke said.

“Damn liar!” Haru said, his voice ripped from his throat. How could they be okay now? How would anything be okay again?

Sousuke leaned down and whispered in Haru’s ear, his breath sour. “He’s dying, you fucking twit. Just lie.”

*

They’d taken Rin’s body and stolen a boat. The boat was because walkers turned out to to be terrible swimmers, and also -- Haru felt sure that Rin would have wanted to be buried at sea. They’d wrapped Rin’s body in the inflatable life raft and consigned him to the sea. If the boat sank now, Haru supposed that they were fucked. Sousuke seemed to know how to work the controls, so Haru stayed on deck and watched the sea.

*

When the gas ran out, Haru thought that this was it. The end. Sousuke had laid out their remaining supplies -- enough food for a week. Enough water for five days. Enough bullets for two shots to the head. Haru took it all in and realized something then. Despite it all, all the losses -- Makoto, Rin, all their dreams for the future -- he still didn’t want to die. He wanted to live, as disparately as before.

He looked up and saw Sousuke and saw the same feeling echoed in his eyes.

*

Haru woke up on the day the water ran out to an odd stillness. He pushed Sousuke off him -- they slept curled around each other, to conserve heat on the chillier nights at sea -- and realized that the boat was no longer rocking with the waves. He shook Sousuke awake -- Sousuke leveled his glare at him, but that didn’t have the power to scare him anymore.

“We’ve stopped,” Sousuke said, stating the obvious.

“Maybe we’re stuck on a reef?” Haru said, hopefully.

“Might still be in the middle of the sea, stuck on one of those garbage islands,” Sousuke warned him, but Haru was already out of the cabin. They had hit a reef -- and Haru could see a dark shape of an island in the distance. It was covered with trees and had a long, white beach that he thought he could reach, if he just reached for it.

He wanted to cry with happiness. He wanted to hug someone. And since Sousuke was the only one left, the only one who knew what Haru knew, he hugged him. Sousuke surprised him by kissing him, and Haru surprised himself by kissing him back.

For the first time in a long time, Haru felt something like hope.

"I know that you're happy and in the honeymoon period right now," Hajime's mother tells him over the phone, "but this is Tooru-kun, you know. I remember how much you used to fight when you were boys. Don't worry if the feeling fades after a while. That's just normal. You'll fight again, you'll annoy each other again, and that's all part of a healthy relationship too. You don't have to feel like you're doing anything wrong."

"Uh," Hajime replies, running a hand through his hair and absently pulling it up into spikes as he watches Tooru pottering around in the kitchen. "Thanks?"

"If you ever feel like you need to talk about anything," his mother says, "I'm only ever a phone call away. You'll remember that, won't you?"

"Yeah," he replies. "Of course. Thanks. I'll call you again next week, okay?"

Tooru looks over his shoulder when Hajime hangs up, and walks back into the lounge room with two bowls of ice cream. "Sounded like you were having a fun conversation."

"That's one word for it, I guess," Hajime replies, nuzzling against Tooru as they settle against each other on the couch. "Hey, you gave us different flavours."

"We can share." Tooru scoops up half a spoonful of his ice cream and holds it up for Hajime. "See?"

"I guess," Hajime allows, doing the same in return. "I don't know. My mum's just waiting for us to start fighting again or something."

"What kind of fighting?" Tooru asks, sucking his spoon clean. "The kind where we bicker over cooking, or the kind where we stop talking for a bit, like that time in high school?"

"I don't know what she's expecting," Hajime murmurs, resting his ice cream bowl in his lap so he can wrap an arm around Tooru and pull him even closer. "Whatever it is, I think we're weirding her out."

"By how amazingly in love we are?" Tooru asks.

"Something like that," Hajime replies. "When we moved in together, I think she was expecting us to get on each other's nerves."

"We can talk it out, though," Tooru says, like it's the most obvious thing in the world.

"Apparently that's not the obvious thing to do?" Hajime shrugs. "I don't know. I love you, more than anything. I don't know why we wouldn't talk things out, just like we always used to if it was something that serious."

Tooru hums, feeding Hajime another spoonful of his ice cream. "Maybe we're just lucky that we ended up together, when we were already best friends. We know how we work. I don't think I'd change that for the world."

"Yeah," Hajime smiles, leaning into Tooru's side a little more. "Me neither."

Koga thinks he’s made a good attempt at ignoring Teshima as he trailed a little ways behind him. But after trudging through the hot desert sun since the break of dawn, with little to entertain or distract himself other than concentrating on staying on his horse, his patience is wearing a little thin.

“Could you shut up?” he snaps, barely turning around to catch sight of the other. “And where the hell did you find a piano anyway?”

“A miniature piano, thank you.” Teshima replies with a grin, pausing in his train wreck of a ‘song’. “And what better way to pass the time than singing?”

“I’d hardly call that singing.” Koga shoots back. “You’ve just been repeating the same two words over and over. For hours

“Three words. Sometimes I say Gorgonzola.”

Koga closes his eyes, turns back around and resists the urge to shoot him with something. But that would mean less eyes on the horizon to watch their backs. But as Teshima breaks into another chorus, he wonders if maybe he’d be fine anyway.

The sudden clang of keys and shout surprises him, but he doesn’t bother to turn around.
Serves him right, he thinks, assuming the guy swallowed a fly or something, and only throws a look over his shoulder after he stops hearing the sound of hoofsteps from behind him.

Teshima’s…mouth has some weird white thing covering it, and he’s clawing at it with a look of mild panic on his face. What the heck was that? Not that he isn’t thankful for the silence, but honestly… where on earth did it come from? He brings his horse around and reaches up to try and help pry the stuff off, but a cough somewhere to the left of Teshima makes him pause.

Seemingly out of the air, a rider materialises on the other side of Teshima’s horse; one hand resting on the animal’s flank, the other reaching up as if to grab Koga’s hand to stop him from touching the goop.

“Hot pants?” He says aloud. The rider from the start like… The one who gave them heads up about that other rider who-

“Aoyagi, actually.”

“Aoyagi?” he tries again. The rider from the start like… The one who gave them heads up about that other rider who-

“Wait, why did you register your name as Hot Pants of all things?”

Funnily enough, both Teshima and Hot Pa-Aoyagi wear twin looks of exasperation at that. As if to say ‘that’s what you want to ask?’

“Is that what you want to ask?” Aoyagi sighs in a perfect example of fate trying to be funny. “Nothing else? Are you sure?”

“The vanishing trick was cool, you managed to shut Teshima up, so yes. That’s what I want to ask.”

Teshima makes an indignant noise from behind the goop, but Aoyagi snorts in amusement.
“I couldn’t listen anymore. I’ve been following you two for hours and if I didn’t shut him up, I would have definitely killed someone. Most likely Teshima.”

Another indignant noise causes Koga to snort, shaking in silent laughter even as Teshima stares at him with a look of utter betrayal.

“Don’t worry,” Aoyagi says, turning his attention to Teshima and patting him on the shoulder. “It’ll dissolve in a few hours. Give those vocals a rest for now, okay?”

And while Koga’s not entirely aware of what just happened, he’s more than grateful for the silence.

“Ride with us for a while.” He grins. “Since you were sneaking back there and following us, might as well.”

They always told stories of things in the woods, reasons for children to stay out of the thicket, and on the safe, beaten path.

Luckily for Inui, Kaidou never paid enough attention to those things.

“Hello?” Kaidou calls out, poking himself between two trees.

Inui gathers himself, distilling his essence into the visual spectrum, and steps out just in front of him. Kaidou looks up at him, considering this form. Inui is equally sizing him up; Kaidou looks different from the last time Inui saw him as well. Some time must have passed in the mortal realm, Inui thinks, the years playing out on Kaidou by making him taller, broader. But still, he has the same inquisitive eyes that Inui had always recognized.

“Hi,” Kaidou repeats, staring up at him. He reaches a hand up and out. “It’s you, right?”

Inui approximates a human hand, forcing it out from his dark, towering form, and laces his fingers with Kaidou’s. He nods. “And it is you.”

Kaidou smirks, the facial expression so subtle as to be missed. “Sorry it took me so long to come back.”

Inui tilts his head. “It is alright.” Things run so fast for mortals. Inui had hardly noticed Kaidou’s absence. He supposes it’s an aspect of the flash-in-the-pan life of humans, everything seems to go so quickly, small bursts of time apart amplified with the intensity of time slipping away.

Something pulls at Inui with that thought.

Inui has to practice a bit to get his human guise back to an optimum condition to actually fool anyone. He forgets often, the need to conform to human standards, since he so rarely uses the skill. Of course, it’s not like he needs it with Kaidou. Still, Kaidou rambles on about how perhaps Inui could come with him to the village, how Kaidou could show him around, see the sights. A few things seem like they could be tricky for Inui to manage — there’s no way he could visit the village’s temple without ill effects — but he at least tries to sure up his guise to appease him.

They lay on the grass in a clearing, far too deep for the average human to venture to by accident. The sun set hours ago, and they lay with their heads side by side, fingers intertwining, and watching the stars.

Stars don’t interest Inui much. He knows their pull, knows their influence, know the way that they interlock into the ticking mechanics of the universe. Sometimes he says as much to Kaidou, but even without the explanation, Kaidou’s eyes are always wide with awe. Sometimes Inui will point to a few and explain their function, and Kaidou will watch him with rapt attention, drinking in Inui’s words.

Inui had long ago forgot what it was like to feel a sense of wonder about the universe. Sometimes he wonders if he ever really did.

But Kaidou… Kaidou makes it all feel new again.

“I missed you,” Inui says, not really realizing he meant it until the words slipped out.

Kaidou’s fingers tighten around his. “I missed you too.”

“I’m thirsty,” Kaidou says.

Inui stops between two trees, Kaidou coming to a stop just ahead of him. “We could go back to the village,” Inui says.

Kaidou looks down, off to the side. “Couldn’t I… you have food and water here…”

Inui tilts his head again. “You know that it’s different, in my realm. If you consume our food and water, you won’t be able to go back…”

Kaidou reaches out, his fingertips tentatively brushing Inui’s. “You’ve seen all there is to see in the village… We don’t need to go back.”

Inui wants to recoil away from his touch, tell him no. But he remembers the pang he felt, thinking about how quickly the mortal years slip through his fingers, the feeling constricting his chest.

He wraps his fingers through Kaidou’s hand. “I’ll see what I can do.”
