It's done so nicely!

There's something about the way it's written, the impatience in it, that conveys how lost Mitani is at this point in time. And then Teshima walks in and refuses to play by Mitani's rules. He takes a different approach, in spite of their similarities, and the tension/discomfort that causes is almost palpable. It's amazing :D Plus, using the game to explore character? YES PLEASE.

Why is this work awesome?: bruh. the style of this story is gorgeous, a very unusual style for fanfic. it's minimal and eerie and it creeps up on you, unsettling and magical without feeling unfit for the canon. it ties in canon from Free! and High Speed! both, which I appreciate. the way the bond between young Haru and Rin develops is organic and sweet while also being deeply unnerving. the story is detailed and cinematic. I love it and recommend it if you like dark magical fairy tales.

Why is this work awesome?: There's a lot of hints at backstory to Rin's time in Australia during the canon of Free! and High Speed!, but we never find out what happens after. This story is a really sweet look at an interaction between Rin and his host mother from when he was a study abroad kid in Sydney, wherein he finally comes out to her. It's cute and sweet and hopeful. I love future fic where Haru and Rin are navigating real world difficulties, and Lori was a great character to do that with. Highly recommended!

Why is this work awesome?: this is a quiet soft morning wake up fic that metamorphosizes into a magic body horror transformation fic. there's a lot i love abt it - i love all the tender descriptions in the beginning, of how Kuroo sees Akaashi, i love reading Kuroo being overwhelmingly fond of her s.o.s and that definitely comes through here. she observes so many small details. ("Akaashi is softer in the mornings, before she's pulled up all the information she uses throughout the day." and "Kuroo appreciates how she fits such a perfect suit of herself over someone so gentle." < these are probably one of the best sentences about Akaashi i've read ever, it makes me so happy, i love thinking about her all soft and sleepy, without having the time to cloak herself in data and an observing eye yet, i love Akaashi being guarded and needing to put armor over her soft emotions and insides, ugh.) everything is also so quiet and lovely and intimate.

the descriptions in general are also so good? "the freckles sprinkled like dark flecks of ink against the copper of the rest of her". i like how some of them are weird and unusual even when we aren't at the transformation bit yet, like Akaashi's eyelashes being "rows of tiny people holding hands" and her eyebrows being like caterpillars. so is the characterization and their dialogue. Kuroo sounds teasing and playful and joking and very Kuroo, Akaashi sounds curt and enigmatic and very Akaashi.

AND THEN, the transformation itself. "Akaashi's dark eyes have filled entirely with the feel of midnight." Kuroo trying to be flippant and chill about everything while staving off panic, the entire confusing melee of emotions and sensations. the masochism and the discomfort were great, but then i am kinda biased in that respect because those i always love those two things in a nsfw context ;; i like the transformations that were chosen for them, i felt weirdly that they fit? i know this is a one-off but it's something i can see myself reading more of, just, them dealing with this and seeing more of the AU where Akaashi possesses magic that leads to turning into stuff unexpectedly. i wouldn't have anticipated a fill like this with the prompt but i really enjoyed it, and tbh getting unexpectedly enjoyable things is most of the fun of making prompts in the first place.

Why is this work awesome?: this is a tadomaki Beauty and the Beast AU with Makishima as Belle and Taodkoro as the Beast. this is such a lovely story? i love the overall fairy-tale feel of it, and how subtly melancholy it is at the beginning, but then there are also these hints of self-awareness and fourth wall-breakage (but never too over the top or in your face or anything like that). i love Maki's characterization in this - being negative and fatalistic (yet more concerned abt the "monster" killing her for being weird and not socially acceptable enough, not due to... him being a dangerous monster), and her feeling more at home in the weirdness of Tadokoro's castle than at home, and just rolling with the entire situation to an extent, like, what can you do, i think that's all very Maki. them getting together and Tadokoro being all flustered was adorable ;u; and... finally the ending was perfect, the original Disney movie ending wouldn't have suited them at all. it's been a while since i read a sweet thoughtful tadomaki like this one so i was really happy to have read this.

Why is this work awesome?: a fanart where Maki is a scientiest and Kinjou is his monster bf. i'm just. their expressions. they look so in love??? i'm not an artist myself so i can't appreciate the exact kind of work that'd go into creating something like this, but i like how Kinjou still looks recognizably like Kinjou despite being a giant dinosaur lizard monster thing. also the note... i definitely interpreted the prompt as someone going off to fight a monster that already existed, not creating one accidentally and then needing to deal with the aftermath, and it's a twist i really like.
