Why is this work awesome?: I love the premise that Lin sets up with this fic, right from the beginning. Miyahara is meeting with Miki to make a bargain and she knows how important that is, knows that she needs something to trade and is grasping desperately for anything in her possession which might have value. I love the way Lin incorporates the bits of canon she does, especially the fact that Miyahara does not have a canonical first name. And I really love the language, it's at once crisp and poetic, giving this story an ethereal mood befitting of a visit to a witch.

Title: Teshima's Party Con On Manami

Why is this work awesome?: Firstly, heed the warnings. If anything mentioned doesn't sound like your cup of tea, you're likely in for a bad time. But if you enjoy really fascinating worldbuilding that's conveyed in silhouette more than it's presented directly, where you feel compelled to keep reading just to learn more about the way these characters exist in a new setting full of fancy parties and menace and danger, this fic is a delight. I love all the little details and I love the characterization of both Manami and Teshima in this — Manami has a bit of the unreliable narrator to them, and Teshima is just so earnest in his effacing, desperate sort of way. There's a lot of good language and really good lines, and the ending in particular hits home so well.

Title: Kinjou Kicks Arakita's Ass at Beer Pong

Why is this work awesome?: This is a fic worth reading just for the alternate application of Kinjou's slight-of-hand dexterity from doing magic tricks. I love the concept of Kinjou destroying everyone at beer pong and I especially love how Psiten pulls it off, told through Arakita's skeptical, scoffing perspective. Psiten's Arakita voice is truly a delight, rough around the edges, grumpy, and snappish, but with a lot of heart underneath, and their Kinjou is a perfect gentleman. And I personally really appreciate that Kinjou is too conscientious to do anything with Arakita while he's drunk; the morning after scene at the end is its own little reward.

Title: Imaizumi and Teshima Gundam AU

Why is this work awesome?: I love how much history and baggage Lin manages to fit into such a short space with this story. It doesn't require a knowledge of any Gundam series to appreciate; Lin paints that world in as a backdrop to the conflict between Teshima and Imaizumi, a conflict that's sharp-edged and fascinating and painful. I love Lin's language; there are a lot of lovely lines and the way she puts scenes together really keeps the tension going.

Title: Arakita and Toudou Take a Road Trip

Why is this work awesome?: My favorite thing about this fic is the way it characterizes Arakita and Toudou's relationship. It's something fledgling and new, which they're putting to the test on a road trip, and there's this really fascinating feeling of fragility that comes through in the story as the reader puts the pieces together. It's also a really dialogue-driven story, which I find to be a lot of fun, conveyed through crisp, spare prose and a great voice for both characters.

Why is this work awesome?: What I love about this little fic is the way Lin beautifully sets the stage for the AU, before zeroing in on the characters. The imagery is lovely and the language is tight and clever, and I adore the picture of Miki that's painted here. It's a first meeting, but a lot of Miki's history is evoked through just a few lines, and the fact that one of the kernels of that is family is really great.

Title: Fukutomi Takes the Girls' Team to the Finish

Why is this work awesome?: What I love most with cisswaps is seeing the subtle differences between a version of a character socialized as a boy, and the version of that same character socialized as a girl, and this fic delivers on that desire in a really clever way. It takes Fukutomi's canon habit of bleaching his hair "because it's strong" and turns it into girl Fukutomi shaving her head at the start of each season. But more than that, it uses this habit to talk about who Fukutomi is as a character, and to show the way her teammates support her through their choice to each make a change to their hair when it comes time for Fukutomi to perform her usual ritual. All the little details are fabulous; as someone who loves prose about things done to hair, this story made me so, so happy.

Title: Fukutomi's Remorse for Kinjou's Injury

Why is this work awesome?: This fic is a sharp little moment of pain, packaged down into just under 500 words. It's the "what if" of what would happen if Kinjou's injury in second year had been worse, if it was bad enough to end his racing career, and what sells it is definitely the character voice. Kinjou's frustration is palpable in the prose even from Fukutomi's point of view, building as the scene progresses to its high point; if you'd like to feel someone twist the knife with Kinjou's injury, this fic is it.

Title: Nekomimi Kinjou and Makishima

Why is this work awesome?: The best thing about this fic is the body language and nonverbal communication. I for one really love cats and the ways cats communicate, and this is a cute little story in which cat-person Makishima just wants to groom cat-person Kinjou a little, while Kinjou tries not to embarrass him for it. What's really great about that is how the premise approaches their relationship: they each understand the other really well, and can read the truer meaning beneath the ordinary things the other says, and that's delightful, that sort of easy comfort between two people.

Title: ManaTe Old Gods

Why is this work awesome?: I adore this story for the rich mythology it creates, explaining the existence and origins of the old gods who the reader will recognize as Hakone's inter-high team of aces. Definitely mind the tags; the amputation scene got quite the visceral reaction out of me, but that's another thing that I love. Pax's prose is rich and evocative and really great for establishing the "folk tale" mood of this story. It's told by Teshima and he is very much the storyteller, I really do recommend this one highly.

Why is this work awesome?: I love the way Doxy creates an entire world in silhouette within the limited space of this story. The reader is given only a small piece of the bigger picture, and as the story unfolds, they learn more about Teshima the mechanic, and meet Manami the mechanized unit of war. The cameo from Koga is great and the little peeks at the backstories of all three characters are delightful, but what I enjoy most of all is Doxy's voice for Teshima and the great banter between him and Manami.

Title: Shinkai Hayato and Yuuto Bury a Body

Why is this work awesome?: I love the way this fic is set up, the way it leads with the idea that Shinkai would do anything for Yuuto and follows all the way through with it to the worst possible conclusion. Shinkai is the one who deals with the burying even though Yuuto was the one to actually kill a man; that fact unfolds slowly, through flashback, as the present scene continues inexorably on and as Shinkai tells his sister how they're going to handle things from the current point on. I love all the little details, the bits of sensory description, the feeling of Shinkai's unease. It's dense and claustrophobic ina really good, unsettling way.

Why is this work awesome?: This fic is not only sweet, but hilarious, and it captures the essence of matsuhana so well. It's so rich with background details, like all the little things that Hanamaki loves about Matsukawa—the way he talks to vegetables, the way he reflexively calls radishes Kindaichi-kun—it's all so lovely and I smile so much no matter how many times I go back to read it (which, let me tell you, I have done several times already). It really throws me back into how hectic and stressful I remember finals week being and Hanamaki's meltdown is just so perfectly spot on, as is the way Matsukawa handles it. Anyway, I'm going to go read it again right now.

I love fairy tail retellings and modernisations, and the very thought of Hanamaki taking frog!Matsukawa around to twelve different bars in attempts to find someone to kiss Matsukawa, only to kiss said frog without even realising he's breaking the curse is just so!!!! I love it. I love it when spells get broken like this, with the person not even fully aware that it's what they're doing. I love how all of frog!Matsukawa's mannerisms, and the way Hanamaki is so fond even though he acts exasperated. The ending is so cute too.

Why is this work awesome?: I love cafe and bakery AUs and this fic encapsulates exactly why. I love the relationship between Matsukawa and Hanamaki based on their brief but regular interactions, and I love the way Iwaizumi gives Matsukawa shit for it, the same way you can tell that Oikawa's giving Hanamaki shit for it in the background too. Watching Matsukawa admit that he has a crush on Hanamaki is just so lovely, as is his worry when Hanamaki stops showing up. Overall, it's just as sweet as you'd expect from the premise, and the characters are so well written!

The tone of Lin's writing here is so lovely, crafting a world that you can lose yourself in, surreal and magical and still so real. It's so rich with description, and I wish I had the words to do it justice, and I wish I could quote particular lines that I liked the best, but I'd end up quoting the entire thing because I just can't choose which turn of phrase is my favourite, when it's all so wonderfully put together.

Why is this work awesome?: I really like the way Lin takes Manami's "you're probably the fastest in the world" line to Miyahara and runs with it, and I think it's really well done here. Lin & Chiha are both really great at cosplay, and they capture their characters so well, even in such simple, faceless shots. I like the way that there's such little text, but it still provides such a good framework for you to build your own interpretations on.

boy howdy, where do i even start... like, i don't even watch survivor; i literally do not even go here but this had me laughing so goddamn hard?? i love the screen directions inserted between scenes and how the scenes themselves cut from one to the next, almost like i was watching a reality show. and the dialogue itself is so great (i'm forever thankful to heidi for introducing miyuki "i'm not here to make friends" kazuya into my life), snappy and witty without losing the essence of the characters! i definitely rec this to anyone -- you don't even need any prior knowledge of daiya, tbh

see, heidi somehow manages to do this really neat, incredible thing where she translates the relationship dynamics of a baseball team into soccer without it ever reading as disconnected or jolting. i love the slow, seamless build between miyuki and kuramochi's relationship, and how soccer functions as much as a framework for their relationship as it is about the sport itself!

look, i honestly still cannot believe heidi wrote an actual fma!AU. honestly. and it's so nicely done, too! you get a real sense of the passage of time and how kuramochi's relationship with ryousuke remains a constant in the centre of all of that, steady and sure and slowly, slowly moving closer to each other even though they don't see each other nearly as much as they used to. really, it gets across a whole lot in so little words. it ends so solidly, too, ryousuke finally taking that final step and making a promise that, up till then, kuramochi had been making and carrying and holding up for them both c:

oh gosh, i somehow managed to miss this at first and had a real I Need To Lie Down, Right Now Immediately moment when i did get 'round to this one. miyuki's the kind of character who's good at pretending, sometimes even better at pretending than he is actually letting down all those walls, those masks, for someone else to see him. and this amps that up and frames it on a whole new level with the fantasy setting! prince miyuki sneaking out with knight kuramochi to hide in plain sight at a ball; at once letting kuramochi in while keeping them in their own bubble....

there are so many great one-liners scattered throughout this, too, but there's this one section i especially love. it summarises the fill quite well, too: "If anyone asks? The prince is sick, not well enough to leave his room and attend that night's ball.

If anyone looks? Well, they wouldn't find him there.

They'd find him here, right where he said he wouldn't be. Both of them disguised so people won't recognize them, inconspicuous enough that they just blend in with the crowd.

And no one pays attention to them, no one pays any mind to two ordinary looking party guests because who would expect them to be anything but that?

lies down for a really, really long time. this fill manages to encompass so much: kuramochi meeting again with an ex-teammate-revealed-double-agent, and questioning about how he feels now and whether how much he still cares for miyuki is real, or if it ever was. or if--no matter the answer--any of that even matters anyway. you get a sense for miyuki's own internal conflict, too, filtered in with kuramochi's pov which just adds to the hesitation, the sense of 'once bitten, twice shy', almost... this fill reads like a moment, suspended, where you throw a coin and are just waiting for it to fall back into your hands again and how even then, no matter what happens, what you do from there is still your choice, if that makes sense.

pacrim AUs are my jam. oikage is also my jam. this fill is a wonderful combination of things i am Very Much About, and it's so well written, too! i really like the idea of oikawa's capabilities as a setter translating into this 'verse as super, super drift compatibility. kageyama, too--so much potential, but still so caught up in the difference between working as a team and trying to carry a team entirely on your own shoulders. and how hard it is for kageyama to realise that in his actions, even if he knows it in his head.

there's an interesting contrast in oikawa and kageyama's dynamic that's part mentorship (or what could've been, or might still be) and part rivalry, and how that balance shifts about depending on whose pov you're looking at the two of them from.... speaking of, i love how the fact they're not alone, that they're sparring in front of other people somehow draws the focus even closer onto the smallest details, body language and dialogue. a lovely AU and a lovely relationship study, all in one.

a condensed version of my thoughts on this: AAAAAAA

a somewhat more coherent version: em's dialogue is pretty much always On Point, and that really comes through in this fill! i love how what isn't being said is just as telling and important as what is; and what is being said is engaging, witty and alive and so, so in-character.

Why is this work awesome?: Bokuto thinks about loving Akaashi. i. god. okay. this author's work is hashtag writing goals for me in a number of ways, and one of them is how she doesn't waste words. at all. i feel like every word is chosen because it's supposed to be there. this fill is only ~700 words long but so much is communicated in those 700 words. it's like having layers upon evocative layers packed snugly into a small space.

this fic is kind of? about pining? and i think that pining is a difficult thing to write, and i think this fic explores how it feels in so many thoughtful ways: Bokuto thinking about Akaashi all the time, but specifically picturing how Akaashi would do everything he does; saying Akaashi's name and liking how it sounds on his tongue; imagining Akaashi's hand on his knee. all of it is so simple and not dramatic at all but somehow so /intimate/ and you can really feel how important all of it is to Bokuto? i also like that we get glimpses into how their friendship developed!! Akaashi rubbing off on Bokuto in positive ways! Akaashi willing to do after-practice with him so he can become a regular!!

here are some lines i am particularly dying over: "It is impossible not to love someone who tries so hard to make their care invisible, and yet is so fastidious with its application." (GOD!! THIS IS SUCH A GOOD AKAASHI LINE THIS IS SUCH A GOOD INSIGHT ABOUT AKAASHI, FUCK); "Perhaps his hand will press a space for itself between the shifting planes of Bokuto's shoulderblades, and remain there."; "Akaashi, he whispers to the manufactured twilight beneath the bedsheet."

i love that even though this is pining fic it's so positive and hopeful because it's Bokuto ("Akaashi, he whispers a final time, and then I love you—still practicing—as his eyes settle closed.") ; he puts so much energy behind his emotions because he's Bokuto. ("He loves Akaashi, he thinks with determination.") this writer knows and has thought about both these characters a lot and it really shows.

my interpretation was that things were beginning to develop in a romantic direction but Bokuto wasn't sure if it was reciprocated yet, or maybe there's some kinda Complication like one of them is aro or ace or both but it's not super clear? (Bokuto wanting to ask Akaashi "what is wrong".) in any case i always like seeing that kind of development unfold.

Why is this work awesome?: rakes my hands down my face holy god there is so much about this fill i love. i love how the narration starts with "Akaashi's first memory of Bokuto is --" but that memory isn't revealed into the end, because in a way Akaashi's entire life explains that first meory. i love the narrative style and how fairy-tale it is. i love the entire AU?? i'm very weak for god/mortal but i also love Bokuto being this fiercely cheerful river god who everyone depicts typically old and wizened but he isn't like that at all. ("a curved, wicked mouth that can eat the entire world raw.") i like Akaashi's fear at the start, because his beauty is a curse and it's going to end up with him becoming a sacrifice; i like his fears about how their relationship is going to end when it turns out the reason why it ends is just Life. (along those lines, i like how their relationship is just a stated thing, it just happens, we aren't shown HOW it happens exactly but, there it is.) AND THEN-- the ending, everything coming together, Akaashi "drowning himself by accident" and remembering Bokuto (who he doesn't know is Bokuto yet). it's so pretty and has such a strong impact and, i love water and water imagery so i particularly enjoyed that the story ended and started with that.

Why is this work awesome?: Bokuto is Icarus and Akaashi fixes him. what would a bokuaka rec list be without the biggest bokuaka lover ever and one of the best bokuaka writers i know, Ms. Arsenic Jay. i die so much over Bokuto with wings and i die even more over Bokuto with wings getting hurt. (Bokuto calling himself broken, oh my christ???) Bokuto crying and being dramatic about it is exactly what i would expect ("I might as well be dead.", "What will I do, if I can't fly?") ; so is jumping right back into the endeavor even after it's been proven to be dangerous.

Akaashi quietly soothing Bokuto and quietly encouraging him to maybe not go too far also hurts me; i love that part of it is selfish, that he just wants Bokuto to stay with him, and that he /recognizes/ it as selfish and tries to suppress it. i love that Bokuto is like "i could bring you the sun!" but Akaashi just wants him. "He keeps those moments like little pebbles in a sack, collected from the riverbed as he waits for Bokuto to tire and come home. [...] Akaashi wonders, sometimes, why his heart feels so heavy." ohh god. i hate this. (i love this.) i sympathize so much with feeling something so intensely that it's like a weight around your neck EVEN WHEN IT'S SOMETHING GOOD, LIKE LOVE. i believe so, so strongly that this is how Akaashi experiences feelings; even though he might not say anything about it or not let a lot of it touch the surface, he's so full with the feelings that are important to him that it's almost overwhelming. i love this fill so much.

Why is this work awesome?: I don't even have the words for how much I absolutely love this comic. The backstory to it is really cute (baby Ho-oh oh my god) and the way it ties into pokemon lore itself, with the rainbow wing that you need to actually find Ho-oh. I love Akashi's increasing desperation as he gets closer and closer, I love that he's kept the feather in a charm, and his brief disappointment when he sees Nijimura where he was expecting a bird—until he realises that they're one and the same. Also, Nijimura as Ho-oh is one of those crossovers that is so perfect that the moment I saw it, I immediately thought of course he would be. The colour in this is so wonderfully used, it adds so much to the atmosphere and I love Nijimura's Ho-oh robes so much. The bonus is also…… so great. Same, Akashi.

Why is this work awesome?: This is such a sweet fill! I like how Alex does this thing where only part of the image will be in focus, like a photograph. It somehow adds so much depth to the picture, and makes it even more atmospheric, and when it's combined with a restricted palette like this, it's just so perfect. Haruna's smile is really cute here, as is his little thought bubble Mihashi (of course he'd remember Mihashi with this sort of expression on his face)

Why is this work awesome?: This picture has such raw emotion in it and I love it. Alex is so good at punching me right in the gut with how much emotion is packed into each and every single drawing, and this is no different. Abe gritting his teeth together, his arms wrapped entirely around Mihashi, the way Mihashi is just clinging to him, gravitating to him so the tops of their bodies are pressed together even though they're standing apart. It captures their relationship so well, and this feels like such a realistic reaction for both of them to have. It's so lovely.

Why is this work awesome?: again, conceptually, i love this idea! i love the idea that they're playing truth or dare (but without the dare) and how throughout the fic it evolves from more general/joking things to more personal/deeper things later. prepare your heart for the last scene because boy, that sure does manage to hurt. and as always, i think andrea really captures their dynamic so well and it's so so Good

Why is this work awesome?: i love caretaking in general, but i really really love how this really embodies krmy so well. casual physical affection is my End and i love the attention to detail that andrea puts into her work. it really shines through in this too, and it's often the little things, the tiny details or lines and phrases that heck me up the most i love it. also, there's some really amazing dialogue and banter in this and that is always, always a great thing

Why is this work awesome?: the way this is structured and written reads and flows so nicely! the atmosphere is aching, emotional in this beautiful but haunting sort of way like it sticks with you as you're reading and you can feel it. you can feel the emotions in this and just everything comes across so perfectly in its delivery and through such lovely prose. i die tbh i love this so so much

Why is this work awesome?: Hanahaki is a truly fascianting trope. This fill took a very gritty and dark Silence of the Lambs esq turn and I love it. This is only one step removed from a serial murderer Iwaoi au. /Looks at Sotong expectedly.
