It's more that the rhythm is more of a march than a melody, and, well, Ode to Joy -- it fits that song perfectly. There's something very magnetic about the steady roll of Ashikiba's thoughts and the steady emotion that pulls them along.

Why is this work awesome?: Well, first off, Kii is a powerhouse and I'll probably be reccing a few more of their fills. But this one is here for several self-indulgent reasons, in addition to the obvious; I love T2, I love fic that causes me pain, and I love FMA. With that, it's easy to assume that I like this, but the way Kii goes into Aoyagi's perspective is both heartbreaking and very interesting. Reading about his trying to remember what it's like to be human -- it hurts so good.

This is such a well-crafted short moment between our favourite Karasuno third years. The characterization is spot-on, especially in Suga and Daichi's interactions and Asahi's internalized (and verbalized) fretting and worrying. It's a whole grand metaphor, and a nicely done one at that.

Why is this work awesome?: (Told you Kii'd show up again) This was such a self-indulgent prompt for me, and I'm so pleased with the result. It's better than anything I could have done for the prompt. Teshima as a doggedly average cosplayer (aha!) seeking his Kenma, and of course Aoyagi is the perfect Kenma. I love that Kii includes Aoyagi's quiet confidence, because I feel that's a trait that gets looked over a lot. All in all, a super fun fill to read, especially for me, she of T2K2 shipping hell.

Why is this work awesome?: So, uh. When I first saw this, I saw it on twitter, and didn't know it was Ballroom. I thought it was from something Sarah had read/watched otherwise, because she knows a lot of series! A very wide pool to dip one's toes into, and I nearly asked, "What series are they from?" Because seeing this picture alone made me want to read whatever it is.

Then I logged onto Dreamwidth and saw the new notification in my inbox and flipped my lid.

Chinatsu and Mako don't interact much, but they interact in the kind of way that Chinatsu desperately needs - respect and gentleness and honesty mixed into one. Mako is everything she wishes she could be, and everything she hates, and yet - the girl is in a terrible position herself. It's a quiet and agonizing scene that the two of them share in the series, so I was particularly interested in seeing the two of them more. And this piece is so beautiful and so far out of anything I'd even considered or imagined. Utilizing the imagery of roses and thorns, harkening to much of my favorite allegory, it is a simple but desperately beautiful illustration. The lineless fauna wrapping itself around Chinatsu, as she wraps herself closer to Mako, and Mako's calm smile and atmosphere - everything about it is like my favorite kind of ANYTHING, I love this piece so much I immediately had to remix it for the remix round, and I still can't stop thinking about it.

Why is this work awesome?: Chinatsu and Akira have a dynamic history - one deeply fraught and intense, regardless of the fallout that is still going on. Ballroom shines its brightest when focusing on its girls, and chances to explore that more are all I could hope for. Within that, getting a fill for my YKA prompt I made for the two of them was a wonderful surprise. A mix of pencil sketch with the starry background, the tone provided by posture & expression & distance, and the separation of Akira from Chinatsu, down to how bright white light shines upon her as she walks away from the mirror. It's a beautiful illustration that I've returned to multiple times since first seeing it.

Having Akira stand there, not even facing the divide that Chinatsu determinedly walks away from, is one of the most striking aspects of the piece (that matched with Chinatsu's expression, the detail in her growing hair), as well as the individual boxes of their expressions being another expression of the rift shown as the literal and metaphorical wall. I love how messy and difficult their relationship is, but this is an eloquent and gentle expression of what befell the two of them. It's a gift to a fandom as small as Ballroom's, particularly so for one of my favorite relationships in the manga.

Why is this work awesome?: One of my favorite things in fiction is "Love tinged by hate" (thank Princess Tutu for that), and Akira & Chinatsu's relationship is prime material for that. So this piece, ethereal and vivid, is an absolute delight. Starting it, I felt unsure about how it would go - Mako and Chinatsu both disappearing, and Akira's nervous awareness of the matter. The introduction of their relationship given this circumstance, the world they live in, and how it both parallels and differs from the manga itself was very well set-up. There's something I love about how the past and present are intertwined here, particularly with what these moments lead to.

Enchantment, and "breaking as much as an enchanted heart could." Love, and being unable to escape the intensity of that love keeping you here, and how that becomes twisted by its own right. The things that draw people out of these magical worlds and into something more real, something that no sweet liquor could ever hold down, inescapable, and Akira who is so willing to do anything for that one word.

The timelessness provided is perhaps the aspect that sticks most, and the reality of the situation is what leaves me returning to it, and wondering about what remains outside that box of broken shards held together by magic, never allowed to fall apart. I really love it. I love Akira being allowed to be the Viewpoint. I love Akira given the spotlight. And I loved this.

Why is this work awesome?: HOLY CARP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i want to swear in amazement so much but i am holding myself back because i feel like sai would not approve. this is an absolutely beautiful fic/comic combo fill. the pacing is done so masterfully through both the comic panels and the placing of text in the fic, i would rec it on that merit alone. it's gut punch after gut punch with this fill thanks to the little, little changes from moment to moment (panel to panel) that draw you in and make you feel like you're living this moment alongside hikaru. it's like the fill that keeps on giving. each time i look at it i feel like there's something new to see (the first time i around i hadn't noticed the last image is the gentlest, saddest gif ever).

i am a big fan of seeing a medium really being used to its advantage, and that's what happens here. if you're not familiar with hikaru no go, maybe the emotional impact won't be big for you, but i still recommend it on the basis of seeing how well a medium can take advantage of its form (though, also, major spoilers ahead).

Why is this work awesome?: a nice look into Furuya's head from when he first found out about Miyuki in middle school to the first time Miyuki catches his pitch. whenever i think about how much Furuya had riding on whether Miyuki would be the catcher he wanted-- it was? kind of a lot? considering how much Furuya's isolation and "monster" reputation effected him? i think he must have been pretty damn sure of his decision and of Miyuki, and i can't see him overthinking and second-guessing too much bc he's Furuya, but... i think about how there's always the prospect that he and Miyuki wouldn't work together, and Furuya's face when Miyuki actually catches his pitch really makes it evident that he definitely had doubts about the whole thing, that were only put to rest during that practice session. anyway-- i think this fill captures all of this, the anticipation, the hope, the nervousness. Furuya's satisfaction at the noise of the ball hitting Miyuki's mitt - and Furuya looking forward to /more of that/ - is so good.

Why is this work awesome?: what it says on the can. the cap i prompted is silly so i wasn't... really expecting something so soft and pretty but, trust Lira. i actually... really love head/hair/neck touching, there's trust in all kinds of touch but there seems to be more when it comes to such vulnerable and sensitive areas, and the way it was described-- i'm p sure i got tingles on my own scalp just reading it, i imagine it felt really, nice.

i also love the contrast of Tanba getting his head rubbed on the field, getting bothered by all of his teammates, and the intimacy of Ryousuke doing it in his room when they're alone and there's nothing baseball going on. i think Lira's rly good at writing quiet moments between people that reveal more about them than they would otherwise let on, and i think they're good at writing the subtle push-and-pull of power dynamics just under the surface, and i definitely see both of those things here. i still don't know Ryousuke very well (woo i'm still on ~ep55 of S1) but i get the feeling that even though he isn't the one submitting and making himself vulnerable, just doing this and obliquely admitting that he wants to do it makes him vulnerable as it is, and it's an interesting thing to think about.

Why is this work awesome?: Tendou is a ghost in this AU and so was i after reading it TBH. i probably opened this fic like three times to leave a comment but every time i ended up being too busy dying emotionally to say anything??? i'm so happy abt this fill bc ushiten is v much a rare pair, and even though i'm slowly seeing more fanwork for them a lot of it is super cute and funny, and tbh i mostly ship it as a cute and funny ship, but it was really refreshing to see something more serious and dramatic and heartfelt for them. AND ON TOP OF THAT this is brilliantly written.

from the way the story was told it took me a while to realize what had happened even though it literally says "death" in the tag warns and even though i was the one who prompted the cap in the first place. i really liked the suspense and the dawning realization of it, both from Tendou's POV and as a reader. like. all the casually thrown in details like Tendou not having an appetite and making the radio fuck up. Tendou continuing to talk at Ushi (i'm glad Tendou can't stop talking and joking even in death) and then quietly witnessing Ushi's grief without him knowing, /god/. Ushi's grief as a whole, it hurt so much, Ushi is such a strong silent type and not super emotional, so i think the way he expressed his sadness super fit him and hence it was so painful to see, even though it was relatively muted compared to what other people would have done, bc coming from /Ushi/ it was A Lot :(

finally - i'm so full of curiosity re: what the spell was that killed Tendou, and what's going to happen next? i also love this entire AU, i'd love to know more about it, how their magic works, why they're stationed where they are. i'd happily read much more of this. (if i remember correctly, i THINK the author continued this in a br5 full, i'll have to look it up if so!)

TLDR my heart broke and i cried but i'm so, so happy about it.

Why is this work awesome?: So here’s a ship that Chiha managed to sell me on: Tsukishima and Kageyama. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I ENDED UP HERE, BUT SHE MADE IT HAPPEN IN THE BEST, MOST FUNNY WAY.
