Why is this work awesome?: This had me in stitches from start to finish, Oikawa is so hilariously insufferable as he makes Kageyama’s DM life so hard, I LOVE HIM DOING THIS WEIRD OCTOPUS FLIRTING THING WITH KAGEYAMA, WHAT IS OIKAWA EVEN ABOUT WITH THE REPEATED TENTACLE SQUEEZING. And if that wasn’t funny enough, poor Iwaizumi stuck there trying to derail Oikawa’s seduction attemps with combat is just too perfect. I love this fill so much, everybody is so ridiculous.

Why is this work awesome?: Wo-wow...! This is really fascinating take on Hinata! And very terrifying! It almost makes me a bit sad, thinking about bright Hinata losing his humanity? or something very important and becoming this. I loved the description of how Tsubasa sees Honoka (as a lantern on a New Years shrine!!) and I also like that the conflict between liking Honoka and feeling proud of her achievements versus Tsubasa's disappointment at having been beaten comes across here as well! This is a really beautiful fill.

Why is this work awesome?: THANK YOU TO THIS KIND PERSON FOR FILLING ALL MY HOPES AND DREAMS, like, when you prompt “he took it to the face” with nosebleed Kageyama, you’re obviously kinda angling, and every little wayward splatter of blood brings me such delight. This is so dubious, but it’s also so?? gentle?? Why is this work awesome?: THIS FILL KILLED ME. First of all, there is just something so terrible about talented Kageyama being denied a chance to rise to the fullness of his talent due to the station of his birth, and that something just makes this entire fill so beautifully, wonderfully uneasy; a delightful frisson of unease from start to finish. It’s the way Oikawa has every card to play, and he does so with great joy, and I love how Oikawa just keeps pushing Kageyama, despite having all the power here. The deeply intimate gesture of undressing your superior is played up really well here, there is so much tension in this power dynamic, and I love this Kageyama so eager to do good, he doesn’t even know he’s playing into this game.

Even at this length, it manages to have so many wondeful little details that add so much texture -- the way they’re half-dressed but in opposite ways, how warm the room is, all of Oikawa’s little touches and how tactile he is with Kageyama. Who am I kidding, I also love Kageyama being into this humiliation thing, but I especially love that Oikawa is just that little unsure about it too. THE CUTEST MOST SWEETHEART HUMILIATION KINK.

Why is this work awesome?: This is probably the most dubious rec of all, but the writing is just so beautiful, there is so much poetry in these terrible, terrible things that happen. Every sentence is crafted with such intense, visual language -- it feels so immediate, so stark, so painfully absolute. But what I also love here is how, despite everything, Kageyama is still so unbreakable, and the beautiful futility that Oikawa feels when faced with that.

Makishima is just so very alien in this picture, I’m all about it.

Why is this work awesome?: I feel horribly attacked by this fill, because there are two tiny references that are just clearly For Me. 1) Tech Support Onoda getting a mention, referencing what I believe may have been the first fic I ever wrote for Sarah; and 2) The ~mysterious~ unnamed Juice Man. Who could he possibly be? Where did he come from? We just don't know.
Anyway, in addition to these small mentions, I also enjoyed the meat (heh) of the fic. This fill is some adorable TadoShin, doing what they do best: bonding over food. I love that they just instantly strike up a friendship on the spot. Best TadoShin.

This fic can definitely be enjoyed by someone with no knowledge of the series; it's beautiful for its efficacy as a character study, for how it portrays Oikawa (and his hard work, and his tenacity) in this different setting. There are lots of really great details hinting at a past between Oikawa and Kageyama that isn't quite brought on screen (tooru’s weaknesses, few though they may be, are not about to be broadcasted across the nation. not now, not ever. they certainly won’t be fed into tobio’s hungry hands. not now, not ever again.) and the last line in particular hits home with a great final punch.

Why is this work awesome?: For starters, Lin's prose just has a really nice rhythm and flow (Oikawa’s voice is light, like the arch of his feet, and the flex of his hands) which carries the prose along at an enjoyable pace, in contrast with the premise, which is a lot rougher. This is a fight club AU, where Oikawa is actually teaching Kageyama, albeit in a much more violent context. I love that Oikawa doesn't pull his punches but does want Kageyama to learn, I love his teasing, I especially love the innuendo at the end where Oikawa tells Kageyama he's allowed to watch, and doesn't say what.

Why is this work awesome?: I adore this fic for how visceral and real it is; Miyu really did their research on the situation they wanted to put Oikawa and Kageyama into and that makes the prose shine. They're both gladiators, with a definite history together before fighting for Emperor Wakatoshi's approval, and the way this translates their rivalry and competition with each other into the new context is really good. Plus, Miyu writes a really great fight scene, the conflict in this fic is excellent (and the contrast between the actual fighting and the kissing-as-fighting is so good to my id).

The details for the fighting and the injury are really evocative and visceral and I for one love that, Xy has such a way with words that's clever and intricate (and beautiful even when describing terrible things).

The tension between Oikawa and Kageyama is slow and palpable and comes through in the challenge Oikawa issues, because of course halfway drowning Kageyama is a challenge. Lin's descriptions are vivid and visceral and I love that.

Why is this work awesome?: I adore this fic because it is perfectly tailored to me in every way. It's a sci-fi AU where a war is being fought and where Kageyama is an android; Oikawa has a prosthesis. The details of the world are lush and fascinating as they fit in around the relationship Oikawa has with Kageyama in this context, though that relationship is its highest selling point. I love Oikawa's bitterness, I love how reckless he is with Kageyama's body, I love love love the perfect, even-handed description of how he pulls Kageyama apart, of Kageyama's high pain threshold and how an android only needs to be able to feel pain in order to fight well, not pleasure. I love that this fic includes intercrural sex because I love alternatives to penetrative sex as the be-all of sexual relations, and of course it's their only option, why would an android soldier have the equipment for anything else? I also love that this is something Oikawa and Kageyama do so often that Kageyama has functionally crossed his wires to process the pain as a positive, as being as close to pleasure as an android of his make can come, it's awful and perfect, I love it.

Both of them familiar with the shape of someone’s back as it rushes by them and past them, posing them as two people who could never quite exist in parallel. It hurts, but in a remarkably gentle way, and I love that Andrea is able to construct something with this very particular, resonant kind of mood.

It's written in a very matter-of-fact, direct way, detailing the progression of Oikawa's playing, the progression of his medical care, the progression of people coming to visit him while he's at the hospital. The prose itself is as inexorable as what's happening, and it's not until Kageyama sends his gift and states outright, career ending injury that all those little factual pieces add up to something real, both for Oikawa and the reader. It's Kageyama who somehow understands the reality of what this means for Oikawa more than anyone else, and I really like that this is a facet of their relationship here.

Unlike with canon, in this universe, Oikawa seems willing to rise to that challenge and mentor Kageyama without pretense.

He's brittle but resilient, placed in an impossible position by the reality of war and doing what is necessary to keep dragging himself through each day while stubbornly resisting getting back in the fray. I love how his loss is conveyed through the particular ways in which he fractures or breaks down, and I love Kageyama being so determined to pull him out of it, not because of altruism or understanding but more because he needs Oikawa to step up and be his partner. It builds really well and I love the final lines for their deceptive glimmer of silver lining: not all is hopeless, but it's still positive thinking during a war.

Lin references specific scenes from the series while also paralleling Oikawa and Kageyama to their relationship in their own canon and it's just, an emotional mess, because the situation of Evangelion is such a mess. It's Oikawa and Kageyama grasping to make their way in the world where they find themselves and... Not exactly succeeding. It hurts, but sometimes you like that.

You’ll just learn something new to make up for whatever you’ve lost." It's so even-handed and idealistic and Kageyama, and I really enjoy that.

His only choice is to retaliate and I just love the way Kii frames this entire concept.

The details of how Oikawa thinks about Kageyama are nice but my favorite detail is definitely the idea of Kageyama being the needy one who pulls Oikawa into kisses, not because he's really needier, but because he's matured enough to understand that this is something he can do for Oikawa. Their relationship here feels at once breathless and fragile and good, in a way I don't really expect with oikage but did quite enjoy.

I love casual touches between couples and the intimacy of being tactile with your partner, and Kii delivers on that premise beautifully. But then there are little details, Oikawa telling Kageyama that "he's allowed" to do it, Oikawa's observation that Kageyama seems "afraid that he'll do something wrong and be scolded for it," evoke their history in a way that's subtly unsettling. This may be a future point where they're dating and learning to be comfortable with each other but their past cannot be entirely erased, and this knowledge creates an underlying tension beneath the gentle action the fic focuses on.

I love flower language and the choices for each of them — Chihaya with carnations for fascination and love, Shinobu with heather for solitude — are both really nice. The juxtaposition of the black and white manga art against the backdrop of the flowers is a really lovely contrast, and I like most of all how Chihaya and Shinobu are positioned so that it appears like they're looking across at each other, from one panel into the next.
